Abby Russell's Top Games of 2023

What’s up, gamers! Abby, here! Your former Giant Bomb Content Producer turned current comedy and marketing writer at Jackbox games! You may have also seen my work at G4TV’s Xplay, my web series Abby Dearest, or on my Twitch page.

2023 was a year of high highs and low lows, and like many people, it all went by in a blur. What this year did offer me was a reinvigorated love of video games. After many years of working in games media and having to play every game as it came out, I was burnt out and turned off. As it turns out, turning your hobby into work simply makes it work.

Some time away from that work, and a series of excellent choice-based narratives made it an easy transition getting back to my roots and identifying as a proud Gamer, once again.

5. Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

No Caption Provided

2023 was the year Armored Core broke out of the confines of its niche box and showed why so many people love it. Fires of Rubicon leverages years of top-notch work by FromSoftware to invite fans to try something different. And that something different is a mech game that has cinematic combat, a robust customization suite, and a story that is subtly told but interesting nonetheless. Most importantly, however, its kept what people love about From's titles intact and was challenging but satisfying. If you haven't played Armored Core before and want to know if it works for you, this is the one to try.

Xalavier Nelson Jr.'s Top 4 "7 out of 10" Games of 2023

3 months 4 weeks ago

Xalavier Nelson Jr. is a BAFTA nominated writer and the creative director of Strange Scaffold, who you may know this year thanks to El Paso, Elsewhere.

I try to expose myself to as many games as I can, past and present, all in the hopes of not just understanding the games themselves, but their developers. Every video game I play is a chance to connect with the human beings--and creative ideas--that spawned them.

However, the disturbing trend I'm finding over the past few years is the idea of... game-shaped objects. Projects that offer me no avenue of connection outside of roughly resembling the feature list of something I've liked before. They're perfectly competent, horribly adequate experiences, and the recent idea of a 7/10 being well-built but boring has taken me by surprise. I'm used to 7/10 being the score for a game that stretches a little further than it should; games with playability issues that nonetheless tackle deeply interesting mechanical or narrative concepts.

Cristian from Argentina's Top Games and Anime of 2023

3 months 4 weeks ago

Rough year over here in Argentina land but games and anime really came through and kept me distracted enough for me to not lose my sanity. So shout outs to all the workers that created all the games and shows I enjoy and love this year.

GAME #5: The Finals

I’ve been following Embark stuff ever since they dropped that cool ass fuck trailer for Arc Raiders (hope we hear more about that game soon). And I was kinda scared when they pushed back Arc Raiders in their development schedule to develop a first person shooter set on a cringy esport virtual reality called “The Finals”. Thankfully my fears were unfounded because this game rules! The running around feels smoooooth, the shooting is incredibly rewarding, the level destruction works perfectly and it's super dynamic, the game modes create that “anything can happen up to the last minute” feeling and the vibes of the game hit that perfect balance of hype and silliness without being annoying. All these things combine to create this beautiful moment to moment gameplay that even when you are out of the action your brain is in full Equalizer mode to see how to approach the next vault/cashout/encounter. So get a group of friends or enemies (this game is that fun) and get stealing!

It’s that wonderful time of year when I descend from my throne atop the world’s great video game website, VGC, to get paid millions of pounds by Jeff Grubb to grace the pages of Giant Bomb.

I won’t say much here other than I hope you have all been well in what has been a hellish year. For a much more eloquent take on the situation, I once again direct you to my friend Stacey Henley’s wonderful piece on the highs and lows of 2023 in games.

It is the pleasure of a lifetime to appear on and write for my favourite site. I was in high school when people were leaking phone numbers and China didn’t care, and now I’m regularly on this website that’s occasionally about video games. Thank you all for having me. Baldur’s Gate 3 sucks.

Hello, this is Evil Uno.

What city am I in again? Who knows? I’m writing this from an airport lounge. This is appropriate because this is where I’ve done most of my gaming in 2023, not specifically this airport lounge, but you get it. Shout out to you, portable gaming devices! You’re the real heroes.

This was an exceptional year for video games. I feel like I’ve done an abnormally large amount of gaming this year, yet I still didn’t have enough time for some of the larger titles I know would have ultimately made this list. Such is life. I play by my own rules, so you can expect my list will follow in the same vein. Before I get started on my top 10 of the year, here are a few honorable mentions that I don’t care to elaborate on: Case of The Golden Idle DLC, Slay the Princess, Humanity, Dredge, and Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE.

That's right! If you somehow missed it on the front page of the site, Community GOTY Voting for 2023 has STARTED! Remember, we really don't care if you vote for games that did not release in 2023; just vote for the games that you enjoyed playing in 2023 the most! Don't worry about Early Access dates. Don't worry about public betas. Don't worry about Game Pass or if a remaster of a game counts. JUST GET IN HERE AND VOTE! Also, if you don't feel like you can fill up all ten slots in your ballot, fill as few slots as you like!

Also, the website startmenu has been doing some fun interviews with the Giant Bomb staff about their thoughts about this year in gaming and what major narratives during GOTY debates they think reigned supreme and the ones they think fell to the wayside. Now that the finale from the live event in Los Angeles has been secured and uploaded to the site, we now have a (mostly) completed picture of everything from the sixteenth annual Giant Bomb Game of the Year festivities.

Why do I say "mostly"? Well, for one, we still need the second half of each staff member's personal top 10.

Secondly, if you haven't heard, GOTY GUEST LISTS ARE RETURNING THIS YEAR! You should be seeing them pop up on the site during the holiday break. So, stay tuned for that!

Thirdly, the Community GOTY voting will begin on MONDAY! The submission form will go live on the front page at the same time as Game Mess Mornings.

Also, if you want to see a bunch of photos from the live event including many from behind the scenes and after the cameras shut off, you can see those HERE!

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am happy to welcome as we look back at the best community creations and site-related news from the previous week!

This edition of the Spotlight is airing slightly late to better accommodate the site's AMAZING live GOTY performance in L.A. The tickets sold out and some of you even organized informal meet-ups to show your love for the site and this community.

For those of you worried about this live show marking the end" of Giant Bomb's GOTY coverage, RELAX! As Grubb and others have pointed out, this year will mark the return of the guest GOTY lists! In fact, you can expect to see those lists soon-ish.

For those of you asking about Community Voting or why I did not get up a thread where y'all can post your GOTY list, the site is working to get things running like in previous years, but more time is needed to figure out how the community voting will shape-up. It is coming, though, I promise.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community creations from the previous week. It's weird to think, but Giant Bomb's flurry of GOTY content is right around the corner. While the site's staff will be doing a "Eurovision-like" GOTY live in Los Angeles on December 9th, that week will see the staff doing the expected GOTY roundtable categories and Bombcasts. The live show is NOT going to replace the usual GOTY podcasts.

Speaking of the live performance, the venue for the LIVE GOTY panel on December 9th has changed. To allow for more tickets, Bakalar has switched the venue to the Teragram Ballroom at 1234 W 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90017. There are still general admission tickets available at $30.00 per person. Please be aware that the Teragram Ballroom is a standing room only venue and if you plan to attend the event, should check out the location's advice on how to secure parking or use public transportation to get there.

Thanks to all of you that tuned in and donated during Giant Bomb's Extra Life coverage last week with Dan, Mike, an ill Grubb, Windbag, and several guests from MinnMax! Dan's stream was able to raise $23,401, which put him well past his goal of raising $10,000! For those of you streaming this weekend or some time after that, be aware that Extra Life does not reset its donation pages until the first day of 2024! You can still send in your donations or host charity streams until the final day of 2023!

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community creations from the previous week!

The biggest announcement BY FAR has to be about the site's Game of the Year plans. If you have not yet heard, the final day of Giant Bomb's 2023 GOTY content will be conducted before a live audience at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles, California. While tickets were available for people interested in attending, those tickets have sold out.

However, many people have been confused about this announcement, and here's some clarification from @turboshawn, one of the people in charge of editing videos and Giant Bomb's social media team.

Since Grubb mentioned it on the Bombcast, I'll reiterate for anyone who missed it: The live event is the "finale" of GOTY discussion stuff. The focus, at least, will be on the Eurovision-style voting and the discussions surrounding that. But hey, who knows what else will be included in the show.

So, yes, the site will still have a full slate of GOTY deliberation podcasts for your enjoyment. For those of you asking about guest lists, I have nothing specific to report at this time other than Grubb is exploring the site's options. I would hint that you should remain optimistic.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am honored to be your host as we look back at the best community creations from the week! For this edition of the Spotlight, Halloween and Extra Life's November 4th Game Day are the biggest talking points.

When it comes to Extra Life, we have a lot of NEW information for you to review. If there is one thing I would like to ask, it is for donations from those of you that enjoy the Spotlight feature on the site. I'm trying to raise $1,000 for the site's Extra Life Team and even if all of you can donate is a few dollars, every bit counts.

For those of you wondering about bug fixes and other updates to how the site is performing, tickets will be starting for major site fixes soon. For many, it seems that the previous workarounds for getting the proper cookies settings to stick for more than a day are not working.

Still consider adding a cookie exception (Settings --> Privacy & Security --> "Cookies and Site Data" header --> Manage Exceptions) if that bug crops up.

As per the most recent Townhall on the Giant Bomb Discord, there's going to be a new podcast supplemental to the Giant Bombcast in the coming weeks. Every Friday, you'll get a podcast titled "R" or "Revengeance." This podcast will be focused on one specific topic or will continue discussions from the main podcast that could not be completed due to NDAs or other obligations. This new production is not a replacement of the main Bombcast, and the average length will be 60 to 90 minutes. For example, if this new project was in effect this week, the podcast feed would appear as:

For those of you still struggling with your cookie settings for videos and/or podcasts sticking, consider adding a cookie exception (Settings --> Privacy & Security --> "Cookies and Site Data" header --> Manage Exceptions). For some people, this is still not working. It was workable at one point and then broke again, which isn't fun. They're looking into this and any other video/priority issue you send them.

The JeffJeff's Bizarre Adventure that was planned for last week will publish early next week.

For anyone wondering about the recent batch of videos titled "Giant Bomb Plays", when a video is titled as such, it is originally from a live stream where the staff was interacting with chat and taking community questions. This, obviously, is different than a pre-recorded Quick Look or Playdate, so they have a different name to indicate this.

Someone made a Mike Minotti Song. This is not a drill. This is a real thing a person created and published on the internet for everyone to "enjoy." The creator of this is available on Twitter if you wish to thank them or ask questions.

First off, in case you missed it, it was recently Jan's birthday! Feel free to wish him a belated birthday if you haven't done so already by either using the link to his Tweet or drop a supportive comment here.

Hopefully you enjoyed the return of Friday Night Forkin'. Also, due to Grubb's vacation, normal programming was delayed or put on hiatus until next week.

Michael Higham's mother passed away. If you have enjoyed his appearances on GB or his work on GameSpot, consider sending Michael your condolences. The link also provides access to his family's funeral GoFundMe page.

Finally, in response to recent events, Tamoor is raising money for Medical Aid for Palestinians, a British charity that works with NGOs to deliver aid to Palestinian civilians. It is a charity organization that is supported by the UK Government (DfID), the European Union and other international aid organizations and delivers medical supplies and services to civilians.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community creations and site-related news from the previous week!

First, let's review some exciting news related to the site's programming. Following a lot of positive buzz from the community, Wednesday Night Wars and Thursday Night Throwdown are becoming more regular features on the site. The Wednesday Counter Strike 2 stream and Thursday's Titanfall 2 community event all went well and have all of the staff excited to do similar video streams like those in the future.

Second, Thursday Friday Night Forkin' will be returning in the near future! As many of you may recall Forkin' was meant to have a mini-revival during Giant Bomb's Not-E3 coverage, but technical issues prevented most of that from happening. Now, a proper return is right around the corner.

Now, let's talk about site-related issues. Some people are reporting political ads that espouse social and political beliefs antithetical to Giant Bomb's policy of valuing diversity and inclusion. If and when you hear anything like this, please use this thread to report the ads. Be sure to include a timestamp and a brief description of what the ad said. Doing those two extra steps will make it easier to remove the ads in question.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am honored to be your host as we look back at the best from the community. This week, we have a lot to review in terms of staff and site news, so let's jump right into it!

Calvinball just published a moderate update to the Giant Bomb QoL app. For those that do not know, this app provides an assortment of quality-of-life improvements you can read about in the thread linked above.

Mike Minotti was a guest on a MinnMax Trivia Tower wherein the winner got $1000 and it was a fun time. But, be warned. Mike was in his peak form. Click the link if you are interested in watching the archive if you missed it live.

Speaking of fun things the staff are doing elsewhere, Evil Uno announced that Mystery Wrestling 4 is LIVE on October 22nd and his guest on that date will be Dan! This is a live, in-person event at Centre Aydelu in Gatineau, Quebec. You can buy tickets over here!

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the previous week and all of the great works from the community. Hopefully, you all are not wasting the tender and juicy shrimp meat found on the tail of shrimp because you don't support food waste.

Ads are still coming in to some subscribed to the Bombcast and other podcast feeds (i.e., Jeff Jeff's and Game Mess Mornings). As mentioned last week, the site switched its ad partner and this might be causing issue. However, Bakalar is working with higher-ups to address the problem quickly. Just remember that if you try to report the problem on the site to ping @dtoast so he can file a ticket with the correct priority.

Speaking of the site's former ad partner, Kast Media, Grubb and others have gone public that this change is due to Kast's continual failure to pay the site on time or at all. Kast Media has been in headlines for this problem, so GB was not alone with its struggles with Kast.

On a more positive note, friends of the site both current and old were feeling especially charitable last week. Drew Scanlon's yearly charity drive for Bike MS has been going well and has raised $12,238 of his $15,000 goal. Eyepatch Wolf hosted a stream for the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) and here's the link to their donation page if you missed it.

First on the docket of discussion items is an update about the premium feed issues. Bakalar has returned from his vacation and has stated that he will be bringing up the issue to the site engineers. He will have an update on what went wrong and when things should be working. Some of the premium RSS feeds are forwarding to Spreaker, but they do not know why that is the case. Nonetheless, the staff agrees this issue should not exist.

Secondly, last week marked the start of Drew Scanlon's yearly charity drive for Bike MS! Once again, the staff and site apologizes that a scheduling issue has prevented Jeff Jarrett from being on the Bombcast Dump Truck. Nonetheless, rest assured that guest-related issues normally do not prevent the Dump Truck from airing every week.

The Giant Bomb Discord Moderation Team have announced that they wish for the community there to minimize and avoid openly mentioning certainly sexual body fluids in casual discussion and comments that make reference to this will be deleted. On the site and in the chat room, if you are responding to comments or words said by staff in real-time, you will not face moderation, but please use discretion when responding to threads, videos, or other community members.

Also on the Discord, Jeff Bakalar announced that the staff and engineers are aware of the issues related to Beastcast episodes not appearing or showing up on the podcast feed for the Beastcast. As such, he plans to save all the Beastcast episodes and have a feed refresh probably Monday.

Grubb and Mike started a new podcast on their Patreon where they go through every episode of Columbo. The first episode is available to Patron/Twitch Sub members, but will be made available for the general public a month later.

As most of you know, Jeff Grubb has returned from their vacation. Moving forward, the site's programming schedule will return to normal.

Also, some people have been asking about Niki Grayson. Their contract starts this month. Currently, they are attending the Women's World Cup in person in Australia.

It was previously announced that the professional wrestler Jeff Jarrett would be attending last week's Voicemail Dump Truck. Unfortunately, a sudden scheduling change prevented him from doing so, but you can rest assured that Jarrett will be attending the podcast in the future.

Also, here's another friendly reminder I'm working on a list of the Twitter alternatives the staff are using to keep everyone updated on their activities and possible site-related announcements. If you know of any accounts that are missing from my list, please drop a comment.

Finally, I created Tumblr, cohost, and Bluesky alternatives to the Giant Bomb Community Twitter account. I wish to thank the dozens of you that have already subscribed to one of these accounts and liked the posts I have shared with each of them. This helps me gauge which platforms are worth investing in moving forward.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community creations from the previous week.

If it seemed like the site content was light, that's because Jeff Grubb was on vacation. It should be noted that this was the first vacation Grubb has taken since joining Giant Bomb.

If you notice anything I missed in this thread, please drop a comment!

People have been asking for a thread with every possible Twitter alternative the staff are using. Here's the first draft. If you know of others to add, drop a comment with links! For example, I don't use Mastodon and could use help with link to confirmed staff accounts.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back and review the best community creations from the previous week.

First, Niki Grayson has been hired to work on the site as an on-screen personality and will be in charge of the site's social media accounts. You may recall Niki being present on the Not-E3 couch last month. Or, you may know them as the person who set all the prices in the Fanbyte store to zero. Feel free to welcome them to the team if you have not done so already.

Second, after promising to do so, I finally got around to making a new guide on what you should do if Giant Bomb Infinite breaks or becomes unresponsive. The important thing here is that if Infinite even goes offline on the weekend, you have options on how to get it back up and running!

The Giant Bomb Store just launched new Jeff Grubb themed hot dog merch on the store! Just in time for National Hot Dog Day! Here's what the new t-shirt design looks like in Bondi Blue!

BOY is there a lot to appreciate this time around. I have to caution a lot of you that this edition of the Spotlight is going to be short on commentary from me as I have COVID. Obviously, I'm still alive but writing the Spotlight this week was a slight challenge.

The first thing you should note in case you missed it is that Dan and Tamoor went to Belgium to check out Baldur's Gate 3! There will be three videos about this trip across Giant Bomb and GameSpot and the first one is already on GameSpot!

Speaking of GameSpot, our sister site's main podcast, GameSpot After Dark, celebrated its 200th episode! Even if you don't listen to it as part of your regular podcast rotation, give it shot because it features a bunch of GameSpot staff and everyone getting nostalgic about the GameSpot of yesteryear.

For those of you that ordered the new t-shirt and sweatshirt design the first week, they were made available, you should be getting your orders SOON, but many have already gotten theirs! Remember, if you don't get your shirt after one to two weeks, send an email to support@giantbomb.com. You can also still buy the new t-shirt design as well as the sweatshirt version.

First, I want to thank all of you for the tributes and commemorative comments on the site and social media related to the tenth anniversary of Ryan Davis' death. It's still impossible to comprehend that it has been ten years, but the heartfelt thanks to the man and his legacy certainly helped with this long coping process many of us are still going through.

And now for something completely different. The staff and site have been exploring social media alternatives to Twitter. The following list is an update of the new social media platforms the staff have joined in the last week.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am honored to be your host as we look back at the best community creations from last week.

There's a new t-shirt design on sale on the Giant Bomb store designed by @jearum! You have six possible colors to choose from and there is also a sweatshirt version of the design. If you experience any issues with shipping or international rates, please send an email to support@giantbomb.com.

Related to site quandaries and issues, many of you have expressed frustrations with certain videos and VODs not being readily available on the site or Twitch after their streams are over. As indicated by Jeff Bakalar on Discord, the videos that have yet to get re-uploaded are getting ID'd for copyright audio, so that's why they are currently unavailable. Staff and Fandom are working on resolving the issue, but some may require edits or revisions.

The staff have Monday and Tuesday off for Independence Day. As such, non-podcast programming will not be recorded until Wednesday. However, the good news is that Jan has raised the priority of providing a stunning conclusion to Play It Forward sooner rather than later.

Well, it sure seems like E3 is completely dead. With the recent news that the ESA has scrapped its previous bookings for E3 2024 and E3 2025, I think there's a more than good chance that this is the end of the line for the convention we all once knew and loved. Though, I feel like we have been doing this song and dance for the past five years.

Nonetheless, if you are mourning the event, rest assured that Giant Bomb has some goodies to keep your nostalgia flowing. First, don't forget that moderator Marino has an entire YouTube channel of photos and videos he took on the show floor from E3 1999 all the way to E3 2006!

Also, many of you may recall when Giant Bomb once hosted banner contests for all of the "major" conferences during E3 and you can check out all of the winners of those contests in a single thread post! Here's a personal favorite of mine:
