Social platform gaming ambitions disappear in a Snap | This Week in Business

1 year 7 months ago

An underlying trend can be seen this week across multiple social media platforms, and it's that games and social media platforms are struggling to find harmony.

The biggest example of this was unveiled by Snap; in a recent memo to investors, the platform confirmed approximately 1,300 layoffs and a sizable restructure of its core business that saw its games arm brought cleanly to a halt.

A similar thing also happened over at TikTok parent ByteDance; the Chinese firm is reportedly "aggressively downsizing" its gaming operations, laying off hundreds inside the division. Meta also announced this week that it would be shuttering its dedicated Facebook Gaming app in October, just two years after launching it.

To consumers, development crunch is increasingly a red flag | Opinion

1 year 7 months ago

For just a moment there, it felt like the bad old days all over again.

Striking Distance Studios CEO Glen Schofield's ill-judged tweet about the seemingly brutal crunch his employees are going through – boasting, rather than lamenting, about the 12-15 hour days and 6-7 day weeks they are doing, and insisting that it was being done out of passion rather than anyone forcing them to do so – could have fallen through a time warp from twenty years ago. It didn't, though; it was posted just last week, and that thankfully means that it met with a storm of criticism leading it to be swiftly deleted, retracted, and apologised for.

That, and I say this unironically, is progress. Masochistic attitudes to crunch, accompanied with sneering at the notion of work-life balance or a studio having any responsibility for its employees' physical and mental health, have not disappeared from the industry – far from it – but at least we've reached a place where they're unacceptable enough to get a negative backlash.

Meta has disbanded a team of experts it formed several years ago to help mitigate the negative impacts of its products, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The team of dozens of engineers, ethicists and others was intended to spot long-term problems with the company's products (including Facebook and its VR headsets), and to take action to keep potential harm from becoming actual harm.

A Meta spokesperson said Meta is still committed to the goals of the Responsible Innovation team, but believed it was better to devote teams to handle specific issues instead of having one team cover a wide array of issues.

Reuniting Mario with the Rabbids: "If our composers don't get awards for this, I will change my job"

1 year 7 months ago

I would love to have been a fly on the wall during the pitch meeting for 2017’s Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.

I can only assume it went like this: "Our game combines the globally beloved Mario series with the significantly smaller (and somewhat irritating) Rabbids. It’ll be a turn-based squad strategy game like XCOM, oh and Mario has a gun."

The idea is as absurd now as it was in 2017. And it’s not really a surprise that fans were so furious when the game’s concept first leaked out.

Twitch recently announced that its exclusivity rules which forbid Partnered creators from streaming on other platforms have been modified. This change in policy now allows these creators to use any of the other streaming services, including YouTube and Facebook Gaming, for creating live content. This is great news for the content creator community and brings with it both opportunities and challenges.

Throughout any given day, this generation consumes content all across social media, from streams on Twitch, to chatting on Discord, watching VODs on YouTube, enjoying pictures on Instagram, and bingeing on TikTok. How to get a job as a product manager

1 year 7 months ago

A product is defined as anything that has been made available for sale. In games, that can mean anything from the hardware to a physical retail game to digital or even services. Then of course, when it comes to a digital game, these can all differ in consumer base, whether it’s a free-to-play game or a hardcore genre title.

As such, being a product manager in games can mean different things depending on the product you’re working on.

Product manager is a relatively new role in the history of video games that can often be more associated specifically in the mobile live-service free-to-play space, where the product is constantly evolving and player growth and retention is paramount. However, product managers can also be found in game publishers, whether it’s for small boutique indies or larger established IP.
