Review: The Devil in Me Ends the Series on a High Note

1 year 4 months ago

devil in me header

The Devil in Me is the final entry in Supermassive Games’s The Dark Pictures Anthology, and it is a fitting end to the series. The game can be legitimately tense, with a genuinely intriguing story. It features more blood and gore than previous entries in the saga. However, all the viscera in the world can't cover up some glaring problems with the writing and the graphics.

Bloodiest Bed and Breakfast in America

The Devil in Me follows a documentary film crew from Lonnit Entertainment. They covered the case of H. H. Holmes, America’s first serial murderer. A mysterious man named Granthem Du’Met contacts them and invites them to his estate. He's an avid collector of Holmes's artifacts. Director Charlie Lonnit agrees so that they can save their failing show. Unfortunately, it turns out that there is more to the offer, and the crew finds themselves trapped in a replica of the Murder Castle, all while a serial killer stalks them through the house.

New Demon’s Souls Fluted Armor Figure is a Figma with a Meat Cleaver

Good Smile Company opened up pre-orders for its next Demon’s Souls figure. This time, it taps into the PS5 version for the design. The Demon’s Souls Fluted Armor figma will head into battle in October 2023 in Japan. The North American release will follow in December 2023. It will cost ¥15,800/$109.99. The price is due to things like including multiple pieces of Demon’s Souls equipment like a Dark Silver Shield and Meat Cleaver.

To start, the Demon’s Souls Fluted Armor figma is designed to be fully articulated and posable. As it is a suit of armor, there are no additional face plates. However, it does come with a full arsenal of weapons pulled from the game. Miniature versions of the Demon’s Souls Broadsword, Dark Silver Shield, Iron Knuckle, Kite Shield, Knight Sword, Large Sword of Moonlight, and Meat Cleaver are all included. Both shields can be wielded as normal or equipped to the figure’s back.

Here’s a closer look at its poses and parts in Good Smile Company’s official photos.

We already knew Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest was set to return next year, but organisers now have a date for diaries everywhere, with 2023's live showcase set to air on 8th June. Things are a little bit different in 2023, however, and next year's event marks the first time Summer Game Fest will be open to the public.

The show - which promises a mix of premieres, live gameplay demos, and announcements - will take place at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, in front of a live audience of fans. Tickets go on sale in "early" 2023, but for those unable or uninterested in attending in-person, Summer Game Fest will also stream live on all major streaming platforms.

Summer Game Fest 2023 marks the event's fourth year of operation, and, as is now customary, the live showcase will kickstart a season of smaller events and showcases from participating developers and publishers. Specifics will follow at a later date.

Soma dev reveals "unscripted" WW1 horror Amnesia: The Bunker

1 year 4 months ago

Frictional Games, the studio behind masterful sci-fi horror Soma, has announced a new entry in its acclaimed Amnesia series. It's called Amnesia: The Bunker and is heading to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in March next year.

The Bunker - which will be the fourth Amnesia game, following on from The Dark Descent, A Machine for Pigs, and last year's Rebirth - promises to be something a little bit different, favouring "unscripted" semi-open-world horror over its predecessors' more linear scares.

"For the first time, players are equipped with high levels of freedom to impact gameplay, choosing their playstyle as they explore at will," Frictional explains in its announcement. "With hardly any scripted events, and constant tension brought about by an ever-present threat, it is up to each player to finesse their approach to survival."

Amnesia: The Bunker Announced, Promises Major Changes to the Series

1 year 4 months ago

Frictional Games has announced the next game in the horrifying Amnesia series, Amnesia: The Bunker, and it’s potentially the biggest departure from the series yet.

The studio announced that their next Amnesia game will be coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in 2023. The developers are calling Amnesia: The Bunker their most open game yet with players able to explore a semi-open world with hardly any scripted events.

This means players can explore different paths and areas without being constrained, but the terror will come from an “ever-present threat” so be warned.

Furthermore, players will be able to choose their gameplay style as they will be equipped with both a revolver and noisy dynamo flashlight. While players can defend themselves, they’ll also be able to survive through stealth.

Amnesia: The Bunker will play as a French soldier haunted by his amnesia. The game is set in a dark, World War 1 bunker.

Frictional is promising multiple solutions for each task, puzzle, and other obstacles, all contributing to the new sense of freedom and openness in the new Amnesia game. The semi-open world actively encourages exploration and experimentation according to the developers, but each decision can change the outcome of how the game responds.

Given that the game is unscripted, objects, threats, and resources will also change in every playthrough.

The Callisto Protocol Interview: CTO Discusses Gore, Graphics, Cross-Generation Development, & More

1 year 4 months ago

The Callisto Protocol is about to be released to survival horror fans around the world, and there is likely no better time to hear more about the technology that made it possible.

Twinfinite sat down with Striking Distance Studios chief technology officer Mark James to talk about the engine, visual effects, development challenges on the various platforms, and the work that goes into creating the beautiful and terrifying results that we’ll see on our screens.

We learn why the developer decided to stick with Unreal Engine 4, and how they managed to achieve the advanced visual effects that deliver the terror.

Giuseppe: Are the locations of the mutations on the body random or predetermined?

Mark James: Yeah, when they happen, and what type of mutation that happens is random. There is an amplifier so when I attack something and I’ve taken off his arm, it might grow an arm back. If it still has all these extremities it might just double up in size and so depending on what the current state of the enemy is, it determines what type of mutation. Also, where the tentacles come out, depends on what type of enemy it is.

So, for instance, there’s this enemy we call the big mouth, the thing that is spitting at you, that mutates from the head. Our standard grunts – we call them – mutate from the chest, so each enemy will show the virus in a different way, and then they will mutate in a way dependent on the remaining body shape.

Giuseppe: Your game looks very “wet” and I’ve always believed wetness is an important part of certain types of creepy horror…

Mark James: Yes. It is. Being wet evokes a sensation of disgust, and disgust is perfect for horror.

Scream Actress Stars in Upcoming Horror Movie About a Terrifying Pregnancy

1 year 4 months ago

Since Scream, Melissa Barrero is doing everything in her hand to become one of the newest horror queens. It seems she’s not stopping with taking roles in prominent films, though, as she looks to make her make in a brand new horror movie called Bed Rest, which comes to Tubi next week.

The trailer shows that the movie might be a mix of the two horror subgenres: there’s something wrong with the house, and there’s something wrong with the pregnancy. If you love both subgenres and horror, in general, you’re in for a treat, as Bed Rest will be released on Tubi on Dec. 7, 2022.

The movie is full of firsts, as it will be the first film that Melissa Barrero is producing and is Lori Evans Taylor’s feature debut. The original idea was for the movie to be released in cinemas, and it shows as Bed Rest looks much better than your classic direct-to-streaming horror films.

If you want more information about Bed Rest, this is the official synopsis for the movie:

She also wears her hat, with its feather accent, with a Phantom Thief mask. The figure comes with replacement arms to take on two poses. One pose has Haru hold her melee weapon, a battleaxe. New Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania Trailer Revealed at Brazil Comic Con

1 year 4 months ago

Earlier today at Brazil Comic Con, Marvel showed up with a handful of trailers, including one for the next film in the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania. For the most part, there wasn’t much new content in the trailer itself, but this cut featured mostly old clips from the first two Ant-Man movies, Endgame, and Civil War.

The trailer begins with the scene where Hank Pym handed the Ant-Man suit over to Scott Lang. It then cut to Lang running with a bunch of ants and him spending some time with his daughter, but that was about all of the clips from the first film.

Next, we see the airport scene from Civil War where Ant-Man is handing Captain America his shield and fighting against War Machine.

Next, it cuts to the post-credits scene from Ant-Man and the Wasp where everyone was dusted by Thanos’ snap, leaving Lang in the Quantum Realm. From there, the trailer retreads Lang’s actions across all of Endgame, leading up to the beginning of Quantumania.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Trailer Teases Two Big New Characters and the Return of Gamora

1 year 4 months ago

The Guardians of the Galaxy are back with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is looking like it’s going to be the most emotionally charged installment yet. It hasn’t even been a week since The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, but that doesn’t mean that Marvel isn’t ready to continue the journey of everyone’s favorite gang of misfits.

The teaser trailer can be viewed in its entirety right here.

The teaser offers a look at some of the team’s new outfits, along with some footage of the two major new characters being introduced to the MCU, Adam Warlock and the High Evolutionary. However, in even bigger news, the teaser also finally gives fans a glimpse at Gamora, who was missing from the Guardians of the Galaxy team in both Thor: Love and Thunder and the Holiday Special.

Another major thing that the trailer teases is that there will be an exploration of Rocket’s past, which will likely involve the High Evolutionary in some way. There is also what looks like an otter in the trailer, who will almost certainly turn out to be Lylla, Rocket’s girlfriend and fellow lab experiment.

New Indiana Jones Trailer Almost Makes Us Forget Harrison Ford Is Too Old for This Stuff

1 year 4 months ago

It’s been 14 years since Indiana Jones last graced movie theaters, but that wait is almost over. The first trailer for the newly-titled Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was finally released during Brazil Comic Con. Thanks to the magic of de-aging, Indy looks better than ever.

The trailer smartly shows modern-day Harrison Ford before displaying flashbacks in which the de-aging software does the lion’s share of the work in helping the suspension of disbelief. This confirmed final outing for Indiana Jones looks like a return to form after the previous installment killed the franchise for over a decade.

Part of the trailer seems to tease that there is some connection to earlier Indiana Jones outings, but it’s hard to tell to what degree. It’s possible this could be the Indiana Jones version of the James Bond film Spectre that revealed everything in the Daniel Craig era had been connected through one organization. We’ll probably have to wait for another trailer to tell for sure.

Monster Hunter Rise on PS5 Will Have More Options

1 year 4 months ago

monster hunter rise ps5

PlayStation confirmed the leaks that Monster Hunter Rise will appear on PS4 and PS5 on January 20, 2023. The PS5 version of the game in particular will have some exclusive features and upgrades from the Switch and PC versions of the game. The PlayStation Blog brought up the changes.

Trophies will be available in both PS4 and PS5 versions of Monster Hunter Rise. The PlayStation Blog noted that PlayStation players do not need to be on the same platform to engage in co-op. A PS4 player can play with a PS5 player, and vice versa. However, it does not appear as if you will be able to take part in multiplayer with a player on a completely different console. For instance, a PS4 player would not be able to co-op with someone on the Nintendo Switch.

As for the general performance and mechanics of the game, PS5 players will have an advantage. For starters, PS5 players will be able to choose if they want to play the game in 4K (up to 60 FPS) or 1080p (up to 120 FPS). This option, as well as 3D audio, will be available at launch. There will also be additional feedback from the controller if you use a shield or Gunner weapons. This is due to the adaptive triggers in the PS5 DualSense controller.

Dragalia Lost Had the Best Game Soundtrack You Might Not Have Heard

1 year 4 months ago

Dragalia Lost Had the Best Game Soundtrack You Might Not Have Heard Daoko Song

Dragalia Lost is dead, and it means we’ve lost easy access to one of the best video game soundtracks out there. Given the nature of the game, especially in its final years, people might not have noticed this plucky Cygames and Nintendo title. Which means, well, you missed out! The title featured some of the catchiest tunes ever heard in a mobile game. A big part of that is all because of singers attached, especially when you consider Daoko's big song contributions to Dragalia Lost.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j5yrNIGv6A&ab_channel=NintendoMobile

Knowing who Daoko is an important point. She’s a Japanese pop singer and rapper who’s been crafting catchy tunes since 2012. She became famous like many do nowadays, via sharing her creations online. (Though her beginning involved Niconico, rather than sources like YouTube or TikTok.) When Dragalia Lost launched in September 2018, it did so with tracks like Daoko’s “Owaranai Sekai de (In an Unending World)” as the opening theme, “Bokura no Network (Our Network)” as the home screen song, “Ryuusei Toshi (Meteor City)” as a boss fight song, “Cinderella Step” as the results song, and “Bang!” coming up whenever you performed a summon. In short, when you downloaded Dragalia Lost, you weren’t getting an ordinary game soundtrack. You essentially got access to a Daoko album when you downloaded the game.

Monster Hunter Rise Xbox Game Pass PS5

Monster Hunter Rise will apparently be releasing for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, and PC through Xbox Game Pass on January 20, 2023. More information about Monster Hunter Rise on other platforms will appear sometime in the future. This will include potential additions to the title. Monster Hunter Rise originally released for the Nintendo Switch, with a PC port of the game appearing in January 2022. The game has proven to be financially successful for Capcom, earning its place as it's best selling single-platform title shortly after its initial release.

The title also climbed up Capcom's Platinum Title's list. It now sits at spot number three, just behind Resident Evil 7 at spot two, and Monster Hunter: World, which has remained Capcom's best selling title to date.

Update: The official Xbox and PlayStation Twitter accounts confirmed it.

Rare veterans David Wise, Grant Kirkhope, and Kevin Bayliss have released a Christmas song

1 year 4 months ago

Three Rare veterans - David Wise, Grant Kirkhope, and Kevin Bayliss - have banded together in the spirit of the holidays to release a video-game-themed Christmas single.

Long-time Rare fans should immediately recognise the trio's contributions to the studio's beloved back catalogue; Wise, for instance, was responsible for many memorable tracks in the Donkey Kong Country series (and provided the sublime score for Nintendo's Tropical Freeze), more recently composing music for Sumo Digital's Snake Pass and Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee.

Kirkhope's impressive credits include Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Viva Piñata, and more recently, Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids, and Bayliss has designed characters for the likes of Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Diddy Kong Racing, and Yooka-Laylee. He was famously also behind Donkey Kong's redesign.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight Review

1 year 4 months ago

Most recent World of Warcraft expansions started with a tightly scripted, story-heavy, and somewhat bothersome on-rails scenario. Dragonflight seems to have remembered that this is an MMORPG and I should be deciding what kind of adventures I want to go on. Right off the boat onto the expansive, beautiful Dragon Isles, you'll be met with only minimal handholding and four huge, exciting zones to explore. But at the same time, Dragonflight feels like a creative step backwards from the experimental – though not always successful – spirit of Shadowlands.

There's no denying that the new zones are downright gorgeous. The contrast between volcanic wastelands and verdant river valleys in The Waking Shores is a breathtaking introduction to the expansion. And these locales feature some of the best side quest writing I've seen in WoW in a long time. One of my favorite quests involved sitting and listening to a red dragon, shapeshifted into a humble dwarf, talk about all his regrets and the pain of being banished from his homeland for 10,000 years.

Another one I loved involves traveling slowly, on foot, with a centaur clan to their sacred meeting grounds, complete with a pit stop for a hunting competition. These kinds of heartfelt, memorable moments really are World of Warcraft at its absolute best. They seem to be here to lovingly bonk you over the head and remind you to take your time, simply exist in this beautiful world for a moment.

Monster Hunter Rise Is Coming to Xbox Game Pass Next Month

1 year 4 months ago

Monster Hunter Rise is making the move to all consoles, as the previously Switch-exclusive game will soon be available on PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows. Plus, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can look forward to Rise joining the service for consoles, PC, and cloud at launch.

Capcom announced the game's multiplatform release is set for January 20, 2023. Monster Hunter Rise originally launched exclusively on Nintendo Switch in March 2021, before it came to Steam earlier this year. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak — the major expansion already available on Switch and Steam — is coming to all platforms sometime next Spring.

Unfortunately for hunters who have already poured hundreds of hours into Rise on Switch or Steam, cross-save and cross-play is not planned for the Xbox or PlayStation releases. This means if you want to play on these platforms, you'll have to start from scratch. Fans requested cross-save and cross-play leading up to Monster Hunter Rise's Steam release as well, but Capcom said they were unable to implement the features at the time.

The new versions of Monster Hunter Rise boast improved performance over the Switch release. 4K resolution and 60 FPS are supported on PS5 and Series X, along with 3D audio. Ranged and shielded weapons will also make use of the DualSense's adaptive triggers on PlayStation 5.

Transformers: Rise of the Beast’s Trailer Is Set to “It Was All a Dream” for Some Odd Reason

1 year 4 months ago

Paramount Pictures has released the long-awaited official teaser trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and it is jammed packed with action, a mysterious enemy, and Maximals! Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts is set in 1994 and revolves around Optimus Prime in New York and Peru. Anthony Ramos has been cast to play Noah, an ex-military electronics expert.

The teaser opens with a verse from Biggie Smalls’s “It Was All a Dream,” with the protagonist deftly stepping out of a mid-transforming Mirage in the classing Porsche 911 skin. It then transitions into ariel shots of New York and forested areas of Peru, raising the plot’s tension with the text, “For millions of years our world has transformed, but something else has awakened.”

The new Transformers: Rise of the Beast video immediately introduces the highly anticipated Optimus Primal from Transformers Beast Wars, as Primal dramatically bursts from the jungle in his gorilla form, pounding his chest in front of some humans. Shortly after, he is confronted by Optimus Prime and warns them, “he is not the one to fear; there is a darkness coming.”
