I Wish More Mobile Games Were Like Marvel Snap

1 year 5 months ago

Galactus fights a group of Marvel characters in a screenshot from the Marvel Snap trailer.

I’m extremely picky with my mobile games. Since its launch in 2019, Apple Arcade has spoiled me so thoroughly with its beautifully crafted, ad-free experience that it’s hard to go back to anything else. To my surprise, this month saw the release of a game that fits both of these criteria: Marvel Snap. I downloaded it a few days ago and haven’t put it down since.

Marvel Snap is a free-to-play deck-builder with very short matches (usually only three to four minutes). As you play, you collect cards adorned with Marvel characters, each with a unique ability. Characters range from mainstream heroes like Hulk and Iron Man to ones I’ve never even heard of, like Ka-Zar or Blue Marvel. At only 12 cards, decks are relatively small, so every character counts. The app is named for the Snap mechanic, which allows you or your opponent to double down at any point during the match. If you win, you get twice the cubes, the currency you use to increase your competitive rank. If you snap and lose, your rank will decrease instead, creating a delicious risk/reward system.

The Big List Of Upcoming Video Game Remakes

4 months 2 weeks ago

Remakes tend to be more exciting than remasters because the improvements often go beyond mere bumps in resolution or framerate. At best, studios reimagine classic experiences in exciting new ways, sand away rough edges, and somehow retain the intangible x-factors that made fans fall in love with these titles in the first place. At the very least, remakes offer a great way to play antiquated or less accessible experiences on modern hardware.

The remake boom has been in full swing in recent years to the point that it’s starting to get tough to keep track of all the projects in the works. Thankfully, we’ve gathered as many of the announced remakes (not remasters) that we could find and gathered them in one neat list, arranged chronologically by release window. This will be an evolving list that will be updated as new remakes are announced and released, so be sure to keep an eye on it over the coming months.

Paranormal Tales Is An Eerie Bodycam-Style Horror Game

1 year 5 months ago

Paranormal Tales

Paranormal Tales is an upcoming indie horror game with a unique perspective twist. Players experience the first-person adventure through the lens of a body camera to provide a more realistic, claustrophobic trek into its terrifying world.

The game, created by two designers, draws inspiration from found footage films. The name shares the same initials as P.T., which I can’t imagine is coincidental. Players explore a series of video files as they control a person searching for their lost dog, Teddy. Expect to encounter some very creepy phenomena, and the realistic graphics (rendered in Unreal Engine 5) aim to sell the bodycam perspective effectively. Check out the trailer below if you're looking to raise a few hairs.

Paranormal Tales has no release window and has only been confirmed for PC so far. What do you think of the bodycam style in video games? Let us know in the comments!

1 year 5 months ago

London Studio new co-op online game magical fantasy

PlayStation's London Studio, the team behind the PlayStation VR title Blood & Truth, has shared a new teaser image and details for its upcoming "modern fantasy" co-op game.

This news comes from a Studio Spotlight blog post by Sony Interactive Entertainment in which the company interviews two London Studio heads: co-studio leaders Stuart Whyte and Tara Saunders. The pair discuss their careers and jobs at London Studio, as well as what the team is working on. When asked about the studio's next game, Saunders shares some new details about what to expect and the teaser image that you can see below.

"Our next project is an online co-op combat game, which as you can see here, is set in a modern fantasy London," Saunders says. "The key thing about this is that it's a PlayStation 5 title – it's not a VR game like our last title was. And it's our most ambitious project to date. There are some important aspects communicated in this image. It's a modern fantasy London, it's cooperative action. And what we really love about this project is that it's giving us an opportunity to showcase a lot of wonder and magic. So we're really excited."

Somerville release date

Somerville, the mysterious sci-fi adventure game, finally has a release date and it’s only a few weeks away. The game arrives on November 15.

The experience comes from Jumpship, a studio founded by Dino Patti, former CEO of Limbo and Inside developer Playdead. That shared DNA is evident in Somerville’s somber, surreal atmosphere. The game centers on a rural family – a father, mother, and child – whose lives get turned upside down by a cataclysmic event involving extraterrestrial visitors. The journey unfolds as a side-scrolling adventure game where the family must survive this apocalypse as it rips through small towns and beyond. You can watch the most recent trailer below.

Somerville was first unveiled during E3 2021 and most recently popped up during last December's Game Awards. The game will be available on Xbox consoles (including Game Pass) and PC.

1 year 5 months ago

Rieko Kodama obituary

Rieko Kodama, the pioneering Sega developer behind titles like Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia, has died at 58.

Nick Thorpe, features editor for Retro Gaming Magazine, noticed that in the credits for Sega's Mega Drive Mini II, there's a message that reads, "In memory of Rieko Kodama." Twitter user Ares Arcadia quote-tweeted Thorpe's tweet to ask Sega producer Yosuke Okunari if this message means that Kodama had died to which Okunari replied and said, "As you understand it. We respected her," confirming her death.

Sega has since confirmed Kodama's death, citing that she had passed in May, according to IGN. Further details around her death will not be shared out of respect for her family's privacy, Sega says.

"We pray that the deceased will rest in peace, and we offer our gratitude for her enormous contributions to Sega," Sega of Japan says, as translated by IGN Japan

Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League directors Batman Arkham series leaving direcotrs

Rocksteady Studios co-founders Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker have announced that they are departing from the studio.

This news comes as a bit of a surprise, both because Hill was the director of the studio's upcoming game, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, and because both were original founders of the studio and masterminds behind its popular Batman Arkham series. Nonetheless, it seems the two are leaving Rocksteady amicably at the end of the year with confidence in the team they're leaving behind to carry Suicide Squad across the finish line.

Fallout TV Show first image location

Amazon Studios and Kilter Films have released a teaser image for its in-development Fallout TV series based on the game franchise of the same name and it might hint at its setting.

Bethesda Game Studios announced back in 2020 that it was teaming up with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films to develop a Fallout TV series. Early details revealed that Westworld creators and producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy signed onto the project and are partnering with Fallout 4 director and long-time Bethesda producer Todd Howard to bring the show to life.

Since then, not much else has been released except a 2021 report that details the show as a "gonzo, crazy, funny adventure" and some leaked set photos that reveal some pretty accurate set designs and costumes. However, today, in celebration of Fallout's 25th Anniversary this year, Amazon has released our first official look at the series:

Greavard the Ghost Dog is coming to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

1 year 5 months ago

Greavard, the Ghost Dog Pokémon.

A trailer from the Pokémon Company International has revealed the Greavard, the Ghost Dog Pokémon, just in time for Halloween. You can watch the official reveal below.

On Twitter, the official Pokémon account describes this haunted hound with the following Pokédex-like entry:

Greavard is so affectionate that paying it any attention will make it so happy that it'll follow you wherever you go. However, Greavard will slowly and inadvertently absorb the life-force of those around it.

That second sentence ties into the first part of this reveal – an animated video posted on the Pokémon YouTube Channel about a trainer searching the Paldea region for ghost-type Pokémon. They eventually stumble upon a Greavard, but mysteriously collapse after playing fetch.

Greavard’s reveal continues a trend in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s marketing campaign where they post animated teasers and reveals of each new monster coming to the games. It started with Grafaiai and has continued all the way up to Bellibolt, a Pokémon revealed less than two weeks ago.

Bayonetta 3 Review - For Extravagance's Sake

1 year 5 months ago

Reviewed on: Switch
Platform: Switch
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Platinum Games
Release:
Rating: Mature

By the end of Bayonetta 3's third chapter, it's operating on a scale that dwarfs most video games. Buildings twist and crumble like flimsy plastic, giant craters pock-mark the earth, and mountain-sized creatures level entire cities; the bombastic culmination of an opening three hours that feel like they're running a mile a minute; a never-ending barrage of stimuli.

It's loud, obnoxious, and frankly a bit exhausting. And I was hootin' and hollerin' the entire time.

Bayonetta 3 Cover Story – Double Trouble

1 year 5 months ago

PlatinumGames embodies style, imagination, and risk-taking. Spawned in 2007 by Capcom veterans, including Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and Devil May Cry and Okami mastermind Hideki Kamiya, the studio became a haven for these minds to create new franchises under the freedom of independence. Early success like MadWorld turned heads, but Platinum’s third title, Bayonetta, cemented it as one of the game industry’s premier action studios.

Launching in Japan in 2009 and hitting U.S. shores in 2010, Bayonetta revamped and, in some ways, improved the stylish action of its spiritual predecessor, Devil May Cry. The bewitching adventure reinvented and reinvigorated the stylish action genre; Platinum created its magnum opus in only two years. Unfortunately, sales didn’t match the reception, and Sega, the game’s original publisher, passed on a sequel. Despite fans’ cries, Bayonetta seemingly ended the series before it could take off.

Nintendo stepped up to answer those pleas by agreeing to publish a follow-up. Bayonetta 2 arrived in 2014 as a Wii U exclusive. The sequel proved Bayonetta wasn’t a one-hit wonder, becoming one of the year’s best games with some fans believing it surpassed its predecessor. The success also proved the family-friendly Nintendo had no problem letting the franchise remain true to its Mature-rated self.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Review – One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

1 year 5 months ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on PS5

After years of flipping through history channels and reused settings, 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare saw the long-standing franchise experience a revitalization like no other. Who knew that a return to a modern setting, a re-imagination of a previously completed story ark injected with the most militaristic gameplay the franchise has ever seen, and a free-to-play battle royal experience would suddenly wipe away the franchise fatigue fans have been experiencing since the same game released back in 2007?

It’s safe to say there’s a palpable amount of hype surrounding this title. 2020 brought us to the Cold War era with Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War, and 2021 brought us back to the World War setting for the millionth time, with the latter performing rather abysmally across the board. Couple that with the looming Microsoft acquisition, the sequel to 2019’s smash hit has a fair amount of weight on its shoulders.

This is a rather hefty introduction, yet it’s necessary to set the tone as with everything I just mentioned, this is the first time a Call of Duty game will see support for a two-year cycle. No new title will release next year unless plans change, and if this game drops the ball, Activision will most certainly be facing many questions as they head into a possible acquisition. So, does Modern Warfare 2 live up to those expectations?

Sony Managed to Produce 6.5 Million PS5 Units in Q2; Aims to Exceed its 18 Million Units Full-Year Prediction

1 year 5 months ago

Today, during Sony’s quarterly conference call for investors and analysts, chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki talked about the situation of the PlayStation business.

We hear that total gameplay time spent by PlayStation users between June and September increased slightly compared to the previous quarter but declined 10% year-on-year, mostly due to the increased opportunities to go outside.

Sales for past games have declined sharply while sales of new titles remained strong. It appears that users are playing fewer games to save money.

Totoki-san also explained the decrease in PlayStation Plus users, mentioning that it was caused by a greater decline in the engagement of PS4 users than expected. On the other hand, engagement among PS5 users remains significantly higher compared to PS4. Due to that, Sony is making even more efforts to increase the penetration of PS5 hardware to recover the overall loss in user engagement going forward.

Restrictions on the supply of materials and logistics affecting the production of PS5 hardware have “significantly eased” and Sony managed to produce 6.5 million during the quarter, progressing faster than planned.

Demand from customers continues to be strong, and in September, it took an average of 17.5 hours to sell out 100,000 units after their delivery at retail stores in the US.

Later in the call, Totoki-san mentioned that Sony hasn’t seen any dampening of said demand due to the price hike for PS5 in some regions.

All God of War Games in Order

1 year 5 months ago

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, The new God of War game, Ragnarök, will be upon us in a week. The latest game will act as a follow-up to the 2018 title, continuing the story of Kratos and Atreus. With a new game comes people fresh to the franchise who will be diving into the series for the first time. Luckily, you can play most of the games on PS4 and PS5, as long as you’re subscribed to the Premium version of PlayStation Plus. So, where do you begin? Well, we’ve got you covered for both. We’ll start with chronological order, followed by release order. So, without further ado, here’s how to play the God of War games in chronological and release order.

God of War Games in Chronological Order

  1. God of War: Chains of Olympus
  2. God of War: Ascension
  3. God of War (2005)
  4. God of War: Ghost of Sparta
  5. God of War II
  6. God of War III
  7. God of War (2018)
  8. God of War: Ragnarök

Note that the only game we didn’t mention was the cellphone game God of War: Betrayal. While the game is considered canon, it adds very little to the series’ overarching storyline and can easily be skipped. Additionally, the game was made for early cell phones, so it’s next impossible to play it without emulation.

God of War Games in Release Order

  1. God of War (2005)
  2. God of War II (2007)
  3. God of War: Chains of Olympus (2008)
  4. God of War III (2010)
  5. God of War: Chains of Olympus (2010)
  6. God of War: Ascension (2013)
  7. God of War (2018)
  8. God of War: Ragnarök

This list does not contain any of the various remasters for PS3 and PS4, such as the God of War: Collection or God of War III Remastered, nor the PC Port of the 2018 installment. We are only counting the game’s original release dates.

Genshin Impact Trailer Shows New Character Nahida in Dreamlike Action

1 year 5 months ago

Today HoYoverse released a new trailer for its super-popular action RPG Genshin Impact, focusing on the new character Nahida.

The video leans mostly toward the cinematic, but like most “character demo” ones, is designed to give an impression of what you can expect from Nahida’s powers.

Incidentally, it’s all fun and games, but toward the end, things get dark as they tend to do with Nahida.

Nahida will be made available as a playable character with the newly-revealed version 3.2, and her wish will be the first for the update tomorrow, Nov. 2, 2023.

Nahida’s voices are Kimberley Anne Campbell in English and Yukari Tamura in Japanese. You likely know her because she already voiced Qiqi, on top of Beatrix Brehme in Muv-Luv’s prequel Schwarzesmarken, Talim in Soulcalibur, and many more roles.

You can check the trailer out below both in English and Japanese, so you can hear both voice actresses in action.

The videos focus on showcasing the game’s two different kinds of story cutscenes. The first is similar to previous Utawarerumono Games and to classic visual novels, with 2D characters and environments.

The second video shows off the fully animated kind of cutscene in 3D, which the game also has.

You can check both out below.

The game launches on November 17 for PS5, PS4, and PC Via Steam.

Incidentally, we still don’t know whether the game will release at all in English on PS5 and PS4, as Shiravune has announced the localization only for PC via Steam.

We’ll have to wait and see whether anything is announced on this front going forward.

It’s worth mentioning that early adopters of the Steam release will get a couple of bonuses for a limited time, including a digital art booklet and a digital soundtrack.

Best 5 Star Characters to Wish for in Genshin Impact 3.2

1 year 5 months ago

The release of Sumeru into Genshin Impact has opened up a completely new set of reactions with the Dendro Element, expanding the roster of powerful teams for players to clear content with.

However, only three Dendro characters are available for players: Collei, Tighnari, and the Dendro Traveler. While Tighnari has carved out his own niche as a Dendro DPS bow-user that thrives in spread teams, Collei and the Dendro Traveler are more suited for supportive roles.

Furthermore, the recent release of Nilou and her kit being geared towards teams that consist of only Dendro and Hydro characters, it’s shown how few Dendro characters are currently in the game, and how limited Nilou’s team composition options currently are.

With that in mind, here are some things to consider regarding the four five-star characters coming to the limited wish banners inGenshin Impact’s 3.2 update, and whether or not they are worth wishing for.

What Is Aubrey Plaza’s Ethnicity in The White Lotus? Answered

1 year 5 months ago

The White Lotus season 2 presents us with a whole new cast of characters, set in the Sicilian branch of the luxurious hotel franchise. Aubrey Plaza, perhaps best known for her role in Parks and Recreation, is one of the main characters this season, and certainly one of the more intriguing ones as well. Here’s what you need to know about Aubrey Plaza’s ethnicity in The White Lotus.

Aubrey Plaza’s Ethnicity in The White Lotus Explained

There’s a short scene between Aubrey Plaza’s character, Harper, and her husband in the premiere episode where she comments that they’re Cameron and Daphne’s “white-passing”, “diverse friends”. For viewers who aren’t necessarily familiar with Plaza herself, this comment might seem a little confusing especially since her ethnicity isn’t immediately obvious just from a first glance.

Aubrey Plaza is actually of Puerto Rican descent; her father is Puerto Rican, and her mother is of Irish and English descent. Plaza has also mentioned that she has Taino ancestry as well –an indigenous people of the Caribbean.

With all that in mind, it makes complete sense for Harper to make the observation that she and her husband Ethan, played by Will Sharpe who is half-Japanese, are basically the “diverse” friends of the Caucasian couple, Cameron and Daphne.

White Lotus Season 2 “Incel” Meaning Explained

1 year 5 months ago

The White Lotus season 2 has officially kicked off on HBO, meaning there’s yet another murder mystery to unravel alongside creator Mike White’s commentary on social and gender politics. The premiere episode has dropped a few hints about the development arcs for some of its main cast, but these can be easily missed if you’re not paying attention. Here’s what the term “incel” means in The White Lotus season 2.

“Incel” Meaning in White Lotus Season 2

A quick Google search of the word “incel” will tell you that this is a portmanteau (a word blend) of the term “involuntary celibate”. It’s a term that’s typically used to describe men who are unable to attract women sexually, and often express anger or hostility towards women because of this quality.

Incels are also described as harboring resentment towards women because of their inability to attract women, and has led to the forming of an “incel” subculture where men gather to share in their hate for women. Often, these hate groups are isolated to just online forums where they spread extremist views, but there have been incidents where these groups have acted violently (such as the 2018 van attack in Toronto).

In the context of The White Lotus, there is a dinner scene in the first episode where Cameron jokingly refers to Ethan as the “original incel”, as he’d spend a lot of time in his room working, and never hung out with women during their college days. Cameron quickly takes the statement back and compliments Ethan for being a handsome guy, but as we’ve seen in the first season, lots of subtle clues have been hidden away in what can initially seem like an off-handed comment or joke.

Scathach Skadi to Debut in Fate/Grand Order Arcade

1 year 5 months ago

fate/grand order arcade scathach skadi

Scathach Skadi is set to debut in Fate/Grand Order Arcade. Like in the mobile version of the game, Scathach Skadi will be an SSR Caster. Players can expect to see her in arcades starting on November 1, 2022. She, along with Servants such as EMIYA, will be on pick-up until December 15, 2022. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

You can check out Scathach Skadi as she will appear in Fate/Grand Order Arcade here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7NSNFkWPyA

The video shows her summoning animation, as well as the Arcade version of Gate of Sky, her Noble Phantasm. Due to the difference in gameplay, the description for Gate of Sky is slightly different from the mobile version. In Arcade, it increases the ATK and Crit DMG of allies within an AoE for 50 seconds. It also removes the magical cost you need to evade, grants immunity to insta-death, and reduces damage for 30 seconds. Generally speaking, though, both versions offer the same buffs.

In the lore of Fate/Grand Order, Scathach Skadi hails from the second Lostbelt. She is a separate person entirely from the Proper Human History version of Scathach, and her personality leans heavily into her ‘queen’ attribute. It is easier to refer to her as a ‘Skadi with elements of Scathach’ rather than ‘Scathath with a lot of Skadi’s traits.’
