Sonic Frontiers' new three-minute explainer video is probably how Sega should have started

1 year 7 months ago

It's fair to say that eyebrows were both raised and furrowed when Sega first shared footage of Sonic Frontiers back in June, but its latest trailer - a three-minute overview video breaking down the various features and gameplay flow of Sonic's latest adventure - offers the clearest explanation yet of how things will unfold come its launch on 8th November if you're still a little puzzled by the whole thing.

Granted, Sega's plentiful, if scattershot, drip-feed of information over the last few months means none of the information in today's trailer is particularly new, but it's certainly more digestible - and understandable - than trying to mentally scoop together a picture of Sonic Frontiers from countless previews and reveals.

The gist, then, is that having somehow found his way into a strange dimension known as Cyber Space, Sonic escapes to Kronos - one of the Starfall Islands where players will be able to embark on Frontiers' non-linear "open zone" gameplay. Here, high-speed exploration and puzzling are the order of the day, with successful puzzling unlocking items that'll increase Sonic's power and defence and revealing new parts of each map.

This Twitter bot tours Half-Life skyboxes to brighten up your timeline

1 year 7 months ago

The second-best way to make Twitter palatable (after simply unfollowing sources of bad tweets) is to follow a load of curated and bot accounts which trickle niceness into your timeline. Today I'd like to suggest adding Skybox Satellite, a Twitter account which shows glimpses of the skies wrapped around maps in GoldSrc games like Half-Life and Counter-Strike. It's sometimes pretty, sometimes nostalgic, and sometimes impressive.

River City Girls 2: First Look Preview

1 year 7 months ago

The highly influential Kunio-kun beat-'em-up RPG series initially made its debut in arcade cabinets and Apple II computers alike – all the way back in 1986, predating both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Streets of Rage, if you can believe it – and since then, it’s gradually built up quite the storied legacy, spanning over 20 game releases in Japan. Though far fewer have made their way to the west. But recently, developer ArcSys streamlined Kunio-kun’s beat-'em-up RPG formula with the help of 2017’s River City Ransom: Underground and its sequel, 2019’s River City Girls. The latter was especially well-received for its slick combat, fun soundtrack, and robust level design. And now, three years on, developers WayForward and ArcSys are at it again with the upcoming River City Girls 2. It already promises to be a worthy sequel for brawler enjoyers and Kunio-kun fans alike, and I got the opportunity to play its first level while soaking up the initial story sequences as three of its six playable characters, exploring a small chunk of its sprawling map, and beating its first boss. It already feels like the perfect follow-up to both the original River City Girls and the much more recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, so buckle up.

River City Girls 2 is pure slapstick, centered around a whimsical yet delightfully self-aware cast of anime-inspired characters who are all supposed to be high school-aged but generally have a taste for violence that would be deeply unbecoming of any actual teenager. Regardless, the whole town wants a piece of you, and you’ll quickly find yourself picking fights with just about everyone. It’s a little bit like Cobra Kai meets One Punch Man, if that helps.

Warner Bros. Discovery Confirms DC FanDome 2022 Isn't Happening

1 year 7 months ago

DC FanDome has been one of the biggest entertainment events of the past two years, but it looks like Warner Bros. Discovery is retiring its streaming event focused on DC movies, games, and television, at least for this year.

DC confirmed that DC FanDome would be taking a break in a statement to Popverse: "With the return of in-person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at numerous comic-cons around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022."

That means Warner Bros. won't be on hand to promote its upcoming array of DC projects, which include Gotham Knights, Black Adam, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. But with several DC projects being delayed or canceled outright, it's not surprising that WB Discovery is taking a break.

DC FanDome first appeared in 2020, where it found great success showing the "Snyder Cut" of 2017's Justice League, The Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman 1984. DC FanDome 2021, meanwhile, debuted new trailers for The Batman and The Flash.

The Pokémon Company is Suing Chinese Developers For Intellectual Property Theft

1 year 7 months ago

Pokémon Company is moving to sue the developers of Pocket Monster Reissue, a mobile game available in China that the Pokémon Company is accusing of plagiarism and copyright infringement.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the Pokémon Company is seeking $72.5 million in damages from six companies involved in the development of Pocket Monster Reissue through the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court.

The company is also demanding that the companies stop developing and distributing the games, and asking the companies to issue apologies across Chinese social media platforms.

The app has been in operation without permission from the Pokémon Company since 2015. One of its developers, Zhongnan Heavy Industries, reported a 24.5% revenue increase in 2021, and one year after its release, Pocket Monster Reissue had already earned its developers $43 million.

As pointed out by Polygon, the app uses seemingly unchanged assets and characters like Pikachu and Ash Ketchum from the Pokémon series in its promotional materials.

Crusader Kings 3's Friends & Foes DLC adding over 100 new relationship-themed events next week

1 year 7 months ago

Paradox Interactive's acclaimed Medieval grand strategy game Crusader Kings 3 is set to make its historical tapestry a little richer next Thursday, 8th September, with the arrival of the Friends and Foes Event Pack DLC, promising over a hundred new events.

These new player-driven stories, which can be encountered throughout ordinary play, all have relationships at their heart, but not necessarily the positive kind. One the one hand, players can "uncover novel ways to become pals with those [they] hold dear or even achieve the coveted best friend status", but on the other, Paradox says players should "be prepared for ever more dangerous rivals, sharpening their vengeful knives to get back at you."

Stories are at the heart of Crusader Kings 3, so more narrative options are always welcome, but those uninterested in laying down cash for the Friends & Foes Event Pack will also have something to look forward to - a number of additional free features and changes will be arriving simultaneously as part of the new 1.7 Bastion Update.

Do You Need to Watch Lord of the Rings to Watch The Rings of Power?

1 year 7 months ago

With the release of the Amazon original show gradually approaching, you may wonder, do you need to watch The Lord of the Rings to understand the story within Rings of Power? To answer this question, we’ve put together this guide that explains the timeline and information about key characters from the show and films.

Do You Need To Watch Lord of the Rings To Watch The Rings of Power? Answered

Since Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings, you don’t need to watch the movies for The Rings of Power. Based on the timeline, the Amazon original series takes place in the Second Age, while LOTR and The Hobbit trilogy are in the Third Age.

However, you can still watch the films to gain some basic knowledge of the lore, such as details about Middle-earth, different species, and the significance of the powerful Rings. A few characters from LOTR will also appear in the series, like Galadriel, Elrond, and Isildur.

Galadriel and Elrond are both elves, and they have the ability to remain ageless, which is why they are present in most of the storylines of the franchise. As for Isildur, this is a character we have only briefly seen in flashbacks in LOTR, and Rings of Power can finally give fans a deeper look into his arc since he is a fairly important aspect of the narrative.

The Last Worker Preview: Welcome to the Jüngle

1 year 7 months ago

A very neat and cool thing about being a millennial is watching an endless parade of news headlines revealing that the dystopian novels I read in high school are effectively a day-to-day reality now. It’s understandable, then, that in answer to that our own generation’s artists have turned around and upped the ante on dystopian fiction by satirizing these horrors that now exist to new levels, whether in an effort to spread awareness or simply out of reasonable fury. Which is, I suppose, how I ended up both playing and loving The Last Worker – a narrative game that takes capitalism to its worst, most fearsome extremes while laughing sardonically at the result.

I played two segments wearing the cap of protagonist Kurt, the titular “Last Worker” at Amazon-parody company Jüngle. Jüngle is the most profitable company in the world, and largely runs on automation. But Kurt, for whatever reason, has managed to hold down his job delivering packages from one side of the factory to the other in his company-assigned hover cart. On the tutorial level, it promises to be appropriately boring work: pick up a box, take it to its destination, and drop it. Kurt in his cart can move in all three dimensions – which took me a moment to get acclimated to but promises to make the VR version of this game very interesting – and he can pick up and fling boxes using a little grabber device he has at hand. A Wheatley-like robot companion who seems to think Kurt is new on the job walks you through the basics, all while laying on thick the extremely Bezosian nature of Jüngle’s founder.

Grafaiai Paints the Forests of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

1 year 7 months ago

grafaiai pokemon

The Pokémon Company teased information on the newest Pokemon that will appear in Scarlet and Violet, Grafaiai. It will be a Normal/Poison type and draws inspiration from the real-life aye-aye animal. The video has a documentary style, with a Paldea photographer explaining how he found and observed Grafaiai. The clip follows on from earlier teases showing off the mysterious "painted forest" location.

https://twitter.com/Pokemon/status/1565324120199495681?s=20&t=PYTSWxpmkTedOptYkL5Y2A

In the video, the photographer has set up multiple cameras in the forest after he finds markings on the trees. These markings are how Grafaiai mark their territories. The photographer catches a Grafaiai marking another Grafaiai’s territory, and he explains that its diet changes what color the paint is. The paint is actually saliva, which contains poison.

The name ‘Grafaiai’ is likely a portmanteau of the words ‘graffiti’ and ‘aye-aye.’ Aye-ayes are nocturnal primates that live in Madagascar. They eat grubs and fill a similar ecological niche as woodpeckers due to the way they forage for grubs in trees. Aye-ayes are endangered, not only because of habit destruction, but also because some people believe they are harbingers of evil. Thus, many people kill aye-ayes on sight.

Are Sam & Frodo in The Rings of Power?

1 year 7 months ago

Sam and Frodo are an iconic duo from The Lord of the Rings, and they’re pretty much synonymous with the IP at this point. So if you’re wondering whether Sam and Frodo are in the new Prime original The Rings of Power, here’s what you need to know.

The Rings of Power – Are Sam & Frodo in It?

The short answer is no, Sam and Frodo are not in The Rings of Power. The events of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy took place in the Third Age of Middle-Earth, while The Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age, which is literally thousands of years before Frodo, Sam, and even Bilbo ever came into the picture.

We know Hobbits can live pretty long lives, but they’re no elves like Elrond or Galadriel, the latter of which happens to be one of the main leads of The Rings of Power.

It’s possible that we may get extremely subtle references to the Bagginses and the Gamgees in the show, but as far as Sam and Frodo themselves, we won’t be seeing them in this series at all. Of course, there’s always the possibility that The Rings of Power may make more allusions to the events of the Third Age later down the line, but for now, the probability of that happening looks pretty low.

That’s all you need to know about whether Sam and Frodo are in The Rings of Power. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more news and information on the show, including whether you need to watch the original trilogy in order to enjoy this one.

Different Strokes’ Enchanting Approach to Collaborative Art Creation

1 year 7 months ago

I approach the picture frame within the clean, white, minimal gallery space. I pause in front of it, taking in what can only be described as the crude scrawls of a child. A manchild, more likely. “They call this art?” I think to myself, as there’s no doubt about what the squiggles in front of me are depicting - meat and two veg, if you catch my not-so-subtle drift. Thankfully, a sign beneath the frame exhorts me to “please fix this!” and so I do. Well, I try to at least. I’m no artist, so turning an eyesore into eye candy isn’t very likely, but at least it won’t be a plonker portrait anymore.

Different Strokes’ setting is an art gallery in which the visitors create the art. More than that, however, each piece is a collaboration between two people. Fresh frames dot the gallery space, and it’s simplicity itself to interact with one, which then brings up a basic set of tools - brushes of different sizes, a paint bucket, a few basic colours to choose from. You can draw whatever you like, then hit upload and that’s the image that will be displayed in that frame. For a picture to be finished, however, it needs a second layer, so the frame will have the “fix this” tag on it. Whoever decides to do so can refine what’s already there or build upon it, or they can simply overwrite it completely.

When Does The Rings of Power Take Place?

1 year 7 months ago

If you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings movies and you’re planning on checking out The Rings of Power, trying to figure out the exact timeline of events can be a bit tricky. That’s where we come in. Here’s when the events of The Rings of Power take place.

The Rings of Power – When Does it Take Place?

The Rings of Power takes place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This means that the series is set about 3,000 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings, where the Fellowship gets formed and Frodo goes on his journey to destroy Sauron’s ring.

That being said, we do still get to see a couple of familiar faces in this series, such as the elves Elrond and Galadriel. Considering that elves have abnormally long lives in the LOTR universe, this isn’t surprising, and it should be very interesting to see how a much younger and less mature Galadriel –she’s still like, a thousand years old here, mind you– handles the conflicts presented to her.

In addition to that, the series will also feature new characters like Celebrimbor, and center around the creation of the titular Rings of Power and how they shaped Middle-Earth’s history. There’s plenty to unpack here, and while we won’t see any epic eagle flights from Gandalf or cheesy speeches from Sam, it should be fun to see what this world was like before the Bagginses came around.

Creative Assembly's Hyenas makes more sense now we've seen it in action

1 year 7 months ago

We'd been waiting a little while to learn something concrete about Creative Assembly's long-rumoured first-person shooter, but when Hyenas was finally revealed, the response was maybe a little muted. Hyenas was a surprise: Creative Assembly had been an entirely strategy-based studio for decades until it released Alien Isolation, a small, considered first-person game. A multiplayer, co-op, character-based shooter with a loud and brash tone doesn't seem like the most natural follow-up.

But then, Alien Isolation wasn't exactly a natural follow-up to Total War, and speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom, product director Alex Hunnisett explained that, actually, these games are rarely interlinked - despite some staff from within the studio moving across to work on it.

"Really, when we were looking at Hyenas, it was a case of going, well, what are folks enjoying playing at the moment, for starters, and the great thing about working in a studio is often you're enjoying doing something, you've got enough capable people around you just go, 'let's just do that then.'" Aside from the fact that both games are set in space, he said, that's really where the similarities or shared inspirations end. Hyenas, like Alien Isolation before it, is very much its own thing.

Kitsune: The Journey Of Adashino is a Japanese fantasy world of yokai and mystery

1 year 7 months ago

As indie developers from Japan and around the world descended upon the former Japanese capital of Kyoto for Bitsummit 2022, some developers present at the event were showcasing their games a little closer to home. Having already been hyped up amongst Japanese games outlets for its unique visuals and inspirations from Japanese yokai and folk tales, Kitsune: The Journey Of Adashino was a rather hot ticket at the event, and with an English localisation and a release in 2023 or 2024 planned, it stands with the opportunity to shine a light on the Japanese indie gaming scene.

While it may perhaps be reductive to make a Studio Ghibli comparison to the game’s opening moments, the familiarity many have with those films compared to Japanese folklore makes the equivalence an easy one. My time with the demo was from a moment early in the game, when you’ve already set foot into this new world but don't have much knowledge about the yokai-infested supernatural surprises that await you.

How Old is Galadriel in The Rings of Power? Answered

1 year 7 months ago

Amazon’s long-awaited prequel series based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy novel and its appendices has finally made its debut, and while some sceptics were on the fence about it, it’s fair to say that it’s a well-produced and authentic-looking show that pays homage to the hallowed source material it’s based upon. If you’re here, you’re probably curious as to how old Galadriel is in The Rings of Power. Below, we answer that very question. So, without further delay, let’s dive in, shall we?

The Rings of Power – How Old is Galadriel?

In The Lord of the Rings, during the Third Age, Galadriel is known to be around 8,000-years-old. As The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age, which is around 3,000 years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, it’s safe to say that Galadriel is around 5,000 years old when we see her in Amazon’s latest TV series.

Of course, for those unaware, Galadriel is an elf and elves are a magical race that boast immortality, so this means that the character who goes on to become the Lady of the woods of Lothlórien could well be around 5,000-years-old in The Rings of Power.

Did Galadriel Swim All the Way Back to Middle-Earth in The Rings of Power?

1 year 7 months ago

So you’ve just watched the first episode of The Rings of Power, and that ending was absolutely epic, with Galadriel rejecting the Undying Lands and choosing to go back to Middle-Earth to continue hunting Sauron. But wait. Hold up, did Galadriel seriously jump off the boat and swim back to Middle-Earth? Here’s what you need to know.

The Rings of Power – Did Galadriel Swim Back to Middle-Earth?

No, Galadriel did not, in fact, swim all the damn way back to Middle-Earth. First, that would be pretty ridiculous, and second, I don’t think it’s possible even for a young, badass, basically immortal elf to swim for that long in the open ocean.

In the second episode of The Rings of Power, we see that Galadriel does actually attempt to swim back –bless her heart– but she eventually ends up on a raft with a few other shipwrecked humans. Most of those humans don’t survive for much longer, but Galadriel at least gets some reprieve from swimming in the ocean for literal days before she’s able to recoup and resume her journey back to Middle-Earth.

So, to sum things up, it seems like Galadriel didn’t have a plan when she jumped off the boat to the Undying Lands, and actually intended to swim all the way back if it killed her. Thankfully, it didn’t come to that.

That’s all you need to know about whether Galadriel swims back to Middle-Earth. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more news and information on the show, including the meaning of the phrase “twos and hands”, and what Finrod whispered to Galadriel in the first episode.

What Does Finrod Whisper to Galadriel in The Rings of Power?

1 year 7 months ago

While its initial announcement and reveal may have invited a lot of skepticism, Prime’s The Rings of Power has just debuted, and it’s shaping up to be a lot better than expected. There are quite a few subtle details that you might’ve missed as well, and that’s where we come in. Here’s what Finrod whispered to Galadriel in The Rings of Power.

What Finrod Whispers to Galadriel in The Rings of Power

Near the start of the first episode of The Rings of Power, a young Galadriel asks her brother Finrod how one would be able to determine which is the true light that she should follow. She says that the light reflected in water often shines as bright as the light in the sky and asks how to tell them apart. Finrod whispers something to her, and she says his response is too simple.

The phrase that he whispers isn’t revealed till the end of the episode, but he says: “Sometimes we cannot know until we have touched the darkness.”

The phrase is indeed simple, and it just implies that sometimes we have to go through hardships or at least experience the “dark” or wrong path before we’re finally able to determine what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s clearly an answer that sticks with Galadriel for a long time to come, and it also sets the tone and pace for the rest of the episode.

That’s all you need to know about what Finrod whispers to Galadriel in The Rings of Power. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more news and information on the show, including the meaning of “twos and hands”, and when the events of the show take place.

What “Twos and Hands” Means in The Rings of Power

1 year 7 months ago

Amazon Prime’s The Rings of Power is finally out, and the world-building aspects are already proving to be every bit as in-depth and complex as you might expect. Even the simplest phrases might seem confusing, but we’re here to help. Here’s what the phrase “twos and hands” means in The Rings of Power.

Twos and Hands Meaning in The Rings of Power

“Twos and hands” is simply a call for a group of people to pair up, and to make sure to hold hands so that they don’t lose one another.

In the first episode of The Rings of Power, we get our first glimpse of the Harfoots early on, and one Harfoot in particular, Nori, is seen leading a group through the wilds to eat some berries. However, she soon realizes that there may be a wolf lurking about, and quickly asks everyone to get up and leave. In doing so, she shouts, “Twos and hands, everyone!”

After that, we see the Harfoots slowly file out of the area in pairs, and holding hands. Nori’s basically implementing a buddy system here to make sure that everyone can keep track of each other and not get lose while leaving the area.

And there you have it: that’s the meaning of “twos and hands” in The Rings of Power. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more news and information on the show, including when the series takes place, and whether Sam and Frodo are in the show.
