Diablo Immortal launch turns around two-year trend of tumbling Blizzard player numbers

1 year 7 months ago

Diablo Immortal has stemmed the flow of falling Blizzard user numbers, and given the company a modest increase in monthly active engagement.

However, Activision Blizzard's latest financial results show Blizzard active users have only recovered slightly - to where they were just over a year ago - and revenue remains down slightly year-on-year.

After falling to 22 million monthly active users for the quarter ending in March 2022, Diablo Immortal has helped Blizzard back to 27 million for the quarter ending at the beginning of July.

Halo Infinite's open world was significantly scaled back compared to original vision

1 year 7 months ago

The open world of Halo Infinite was significantly scaled back compared to its original vision.

That's according to Joseph Staten, head of creative at 343 Industries, speaking on the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences podcast Game Maker's Notebook (thanks TechRadar).

Infinite was the first open world Halo game so it's understandable there were several changes during development, but in particular the scope and biome variety were heavily revised.

Exoprimal Closed Network Test Preview – It’s Rainin’ Dinos

1 year 7 months ago

Capcom’s never been afraid to dive headfirst into cheesy territory, and Exoprimal is shaping up to be the latest example of just that. It’s not quite the tense survival horror experience Dino Crisis fans might’ve been hoping for, but the bones of the PvPvE gameplay in Exoprimal are solid enough for me to think that this game could have a lot of potential going forward.

Exoprimal isn’t shy about being self-aware, or letting players know right off the bat that they, too, know just how silly the entire premise is. It’s going to be cloudy this week, with a chance of dinosaur rain. And the game means that quite literally; dinosaurs drop from the skies to terrorize the world, and it’s up to you and your team of five to neutralize the threat.

The closed network test for July was extremely limited, only giving me the opportunity to check out one game mode, but it was plenty for me to see just what Capcom is going for here. The mode tasks players with completing a series of small objectives, and all of them involve killing dinosaurs. As soon as a match starts, teams will need to move together to kill a set number of raptors, protect a location from said raptors, or collect resources while killing raptors.

Bullet Train Review – Is This a Ride Worth Taking?

1 year 7 months ago

David Leitch’s latest film, Bullet Train, comes rolling into the station on Aug. 5, but is this a ride worth getting on?

When coming into Bullet Train, I didn’t know what to expect. While I kept seeing people hyping the trailers up with excitement, I wasn’t completely sold as this zany style of film isn’t one that always appeals to me. I kept seeing the trailers over and over again, and I kept thinking that while it looked to be a fun movie, Bullet Train wasn’t something that I was going to be in love with.

I am here to tell you that I absolutely adore Bullet Train and think it was an absolutely fantastic ride all the way throughout. I came into the film and was immediately endeared by the quirky style of the film that I wasn’t sure I would love. Then, while being distracted by the instantly likable style and cast, I found myself enthralled in a surprisingly complicated plot full of fantastic twists and turns.

Why Did Gene Start Scamming People Again in Better Call Saul?

1 year 7 months ago

This week’s episode of Better Call Saul saw a pretty drastic shift in Gene’s character, which could have big implications for the final two episodes. And if you’re wondering why Gene’s decided to go back to scamming people once again, here’s what you need to know.

Why Is Gene Scamming People Again in Better Call Saul?

From all the scenes we’ve seen of him in the past five season, Gene has been presented as a very careful person who would rather spend nearly three hours in the garbage disposal room rather than take the emergency exit and risk attracting police attention. However, in the episode “Breaking Bad”, Gene quite literally breaks bad and goes back to his Slippin’ Jimmy ways.

To put it simply, Gene starts scamming people again because that’s his way of coping when things go awry in his life. In this case, he’d just gotten off a phone call with Kim which clearly went very badly. He’s finally reached a point where he’s lost the Saul Goodman persona, his money, his career as a lawyer, and he doesn’t have anything left. Add to the fact that one of his marks said to him, “You only go around once,” and it’s probably safe to assume that Gene thinks he has nothing left to lose, so why not do what he does best?

During his scams, Gene also introduces himself as Viktor, which is a callback to the scams he used to run with Kim as Viktor and Giselle. It then becomes clear that he’s running these scams again not just because they’re a coping mechanism, but because he misses Kim.

Pre-ordered Marvel’s Spider-Man on Steam? Valve say you might want to get a refund

With cancelled pre-order comes small discount. Isn’t that the motto of Spider-Man? Well, it’s close enough under the circumstances. Steam have recommended scrapping your pre-order of upcoming webslingathon Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered because the game was priced too high in some territories. The price drop only applies in a few regions, but means that anyone who pre-ordered the game there might want to cancel theirs and buy it again. Or, you know, just wait until the game’s out.

FGO Ooku Rerun Brings Kama and Kiara Mazing Mayhem

1 year 7 months ago

FGO Ooku Rerun

Fate/Grand Order fans may be cooling off from the Servant Summer Camp event, but there's more to experience for those with energy remaining. Right on the heels of the Summer 2022 conclusion is a rerun of last year's spring event: Tokugawa Restoration Labyrinth, Ooku. The FGO Ooku rerun gives players who didn't complete the event the first time another chance to clear it. Those who did get through the maze can do it again for more rewards, as well as a few new goodies.

The FGO Ooku rerun is, as before, based on 17th-century Japan and the convoluted design of Edo castle. The seat of power for the Tokugawa Shogunate, Edo castle was deliberately designed to confuse potential intruders, with its full layout familiar only to those supposed to be there. One feature of Edo and similar castles is the Ooku, or "great interior", an inner chamber that functions as the women's quarters. Women connected to the Shogun resided there, forbidden from leaving. Similarly, the Ooku was forbidden to men unaccompanied by the Shogun, with intruders quickly put to death. In FGO's rendition, the Ooku of Edo castle has been supernaturally transformed into a sinister maze, trapping those inside in a hell of corruption and decadence.

Where Did the Money Come From in The Bear?

1 year 7 months ago

The Bear is one of the most talked about shows of 2022, as fans just can’t get enough of the stressful yet realistic environment that comes with owning and running a small restaurant in Chicago. Alongside great characters and solid pacing, the FX/Hulu original also has some pretty interesting stories, especially when it comes to one that happens in the last episode. Here is everything you need to know about where the money came from in The Bear.

How Much Money Was in the Spaghetti?

One of the biggest questions at the end of Season 1 revolves around the money that Carmy finds in the Spaghetti cans. Just how much was in them that allowed him to shut down the restaurant and start from scratch?

According to an interview with Indiewire, The Bear creator, co-showrunner, and director Christopher Storer revealed that the Spaghetti cans that the group unpacks in the final episode of the first season total out to $295,000. If that amount sounds familiar, then you probably already know where the money came from as well.

Is Batman Really Dead in Gotham Knights? Explained

1 year 7 months ago

Following the conclusion of the Arkham trilogy back in 2015, the premise of Gotham Knights is most certainly not what many gamers expected from the next Batman game. Bruce Wayne aka Batman has suddenly died leaving the Bat Family, heroes Batman specifically chose to be crime fighters, in charge to protect the streets and citizens of Gotham City. This premise was revealed during the world premiere trailer for Gotham Knights, and today, we’re going to be diving deeper into said premise. Is Batman really dead in Gotham Knights?

What Happened to Batman in Gotham Knights? Answered

Batman’s death is caused by a freak accident in the Batcave that resulted in him destroying the entire facility with him inside. This is mentioned in the beginning of the reveal trailer that debuted during the DC FanDome event in 2020.

Batman’s death is most certainly a surprise to many fans and, while it may seem like he may still make an appearance, the developers have confirmed that Batman is in fact dead. During a fan Q&A session at San Diego Comic-Con, creative director Patrick Redding confirmed that Batman is dead and will remain dead all the way through game’s entirety.

Sea of Thieves Season 7 Deep Dive Video Tells You Everything You Need to Know

1 year 7 months ago

Following yesterday’s reveal of the features and content coming with Season 7 of Sea of Thieves, Rare revealed a video diving deeper into what’s coming.

We hear more directly from the developers, who explain how you’ll be able to purchase a ship of your very own. As a matter of fact, you can immediately purchase one ship per type, but when those become Legendary, you can purchase new ones of the same type, so you can basically get as many rides as you want and pimp them however you want.

Speaking of pimping your ride, we take another, deeper look at how you can customize your Captain Cabin, and at the logbook feature, which will be available physically on your desk and your enemies can steal and sell if they manage to sink you.

More elements of note include the Sovereigns, a new faction that you can use to speed up the sale of treasure chests and the acquiring of reputation.

Speaking of quality of life, you’ll also be able to stock up your ship fully by spending a bit of in-game money, removing the requirement to go find supplies all over the outpost.

How Bear and Breakfast Opened for Business Despite Multiple Challenges

1 year 7 months ago

The many independent developers I’ve spoken to over the years have described a wide array of diverse and unusual paths that brought them into game development in the first place. But Bear and Breakfast creator Rareș Cinteză is the first developer I’ve spoken to who not only didn’t imagine he’d ever be a game developer, but actively didn’t think he could be for the longest time.

“It felt like one of those ‘that’s for other people’ kind of things,” he tells me shortly ahead of Bear and Breakfast’s recent PC launch.

While Cinteză didn’t think he was cut out for the job, he still loved the idea of making games. So he started volunteering at conferences like GDC, doing graphic design for things like posters, and talking to developers. Eventually, this brought him to developer and publisher Those Awesome Guys, who brought him on board to do some marketing…which gradually turned into game development. Cinteză had made it.

Once he had his feet wet in development, though, Cinteză wanted to take it a step further and make his own game, and thus Bear and Breakfast was born. It’s Cinteză’s first “real game dev project” from start to finish, as well as the first major project for most of the other team members at Gummy Cat studio. Cinteză says he learned Unity while working on B&B.

Get an Inside Look at D&D's Spelljammer Revival

1 year 7 months ago

Announced earlier this year, Spelljammer: Adventures in Space is an update to the classic D&D setting for Fifth Edition Dungeons & Dragons. We recently sat in on a briefing with Lead Designer Chris Perkins who walked us through what's included the various editions of the books as well as some of the new rules and creatures coming to this revised spacefaring fantasy realm.

Chris Perkins, Lead Designer: Spelljammer has always been a bit of a weirdo and so we felt like this was a great opportunity to play with the form factor of the product. Instead of presenting it as a book—like we would typically do—what we decided to do was break it down into smaller, more digestible components. So, this product includes three books: a rule book/setting book called the Astral Adventurer's Guide, a monster book called Boo's Astral Menagerie, and an adventure, Light of Xaryxis. Coupled with a poster map of the Rock of Bral, which is a classic setting, and a DM screen all tidily tucked away in a beautiful slipcase.

Madden 23 Devs Promise 'Most Polished Version In a Long Time' After Years Of Buggy Releases

1 year 7 months ago

Madden NFL has been undeniably stuck in a rut this generation. Since the release of the Xbox Series X/S and PS5, EA’s long-running NFL sim has consistently hovered around 65 on Metacritic. The complaints have been the same: unpolished, drab presentation, and modes that have failed to keep pace with the competition.

Many fans trace Madden's decline back to Madden 13, which formed the basic template for the current version of the series. Others go back even further. Wherever it started, it's hard to ignore the sense of malaise that has taken root in reviews, social media, and elsewhere. EA has protested in previous years that it's just a vocal minority, and that the series is actually doing quite well with the average player who isn't extremely online. This year they're embracing it.

"As a game developer, especially on a yearly sports title, it's not as much having thick skin as much as [needing] to have a great filter, because there's a reason that these players are going to say whatever they're going to say about the game, and you've got to figure out why," senior producer Clint Oldenburg tells IGN. "And even if there's a hundred words in there that don't tell you why, there might be one or two that will tell you why, and that's what you got to focus on so that you make sure you're delivering the experience at its core, what those players are asking for."

Activision Blizzard Loses Millions of Players, But Adds 25% More Developers Year-on-Year

1 year 7 months ago

Call of Duty and Overwatch publisher Activision Blizzard has lost millions of players compared to this time last year but, despite that decrease, has grown its pool of developers by 25%.

During its latest earnings results, Activision Blizzard revealed that its monthly active users - categorised as anyone who accesses one of its games in that timeframe - fell from 372 million at the end of March 2022 to 361 million at the end of June.

This drop continues the publisher's downward trend as the number of monthly active users on June 30 last year was 408 million, and it has fallen relatively steadily ever since. There are some extenuating circumstances at work – Activision Blizzard has had a notably quiet release schedule recently, party down to game delays, and a natural reduction in players after COVID lockdowns..

The lowering number of players hasn't deterred Activision Blizzard from investing in its development teams, however, as the report also states that this has grown considerably since June last year.

"During the second quarter, our teams made strong progress on a broad pipeline of content across established franchises," it said. "We continue to increase investment in our creative resources to meet the demand for our content - our development headcount at the end of the second quarter grew by 25% year-over-year."

Battlefield 2042 Update Finally Begins to Address 'Walking Sim' Map Complaints

1 year 7 months ago

EA's DICE has finally addressed criticisms of one of Battlefield 2042's maps, which was dubbed a "walking simulator" by fans. The new update 1.2 reworks Kaleidoscope to include an "improved gameplay flow".

The developer released patch notes for the update which arrives today, August 2, detailing its midseason update – which also includes a handful of other changes. The Kaleidoscope rework headlines these improvements, however, marking the first map update since DICE said it understands why fans "use terms such as 'walking simulator' to describe" Battlefield 2042 back in March.

"We identified several focus areas for our launch maps where our quality standards could be improved through cover, intensity, line of sight, pathing and traversal changes," DICE said. "Reworking maps takes time, and Kaleidoscope is the first map for which we have completed this rework."

Changes include the addition of more cover through new assets and raised terrain in some areas, creating new flag positions, and adding brand new areas including a forward operating base in the park and a second command post close to the tower.

DICE will release an update to Renewal next as it works its way through improving Battlefield 2042's seven launch maps. This will arrive sometime during Season 2, the developer said, meaning sometime between September and November.

Ghostwire: Tokyo Obon Update Brings a Costume and Emote

1 year 7 months ago

Ghostwire Tokyo Obon

August 1st is a special day in Japan. The Bon festival (also called "Obon") is when Japanese families celebrate their ancestors. Those ancestors are said to return in spirit form to the world temporarily. Bethesda and Tango Gameworks commemorated the occasion with the Ghostwire: Tokyo Obon update. A free update to the game dated August 1, 2022, the Obon update adds a new cosmetic costume for players to wear in-game, as well as a new emote.

In its blog post on the topic, Tango Gameworks drew parallels between Ghostwire: Tokyo and Obon. Just as the game deals heavily with spirits and their impact on the living world, Obon is a time to remember and celebrate the impact of one's ancestors on the world. The game includes areas and scenes inspired by the Obon festival, including iconic traditions such as the Bon Odori dance. The practice of Toro-nagashi, where lit lanterns are floated down a river to mourn departed souls, is also seen. The Bon Odori itself is available within Ghostwire: Tokyo already as the "Tokyo Bon dance" emote.

The Ghostwire: Tokyo Obon update adds the Jinbei costume, which is a casual kimono-style jacket and shorts outfit. Jinbei are often worn by Japanese men in the summer. The update also adds the "Japanese Sparklers" emote, which causes Akito to crouch down and admire a sparkler's glow. The update also throws in some bug fixes, adjusting things like gliding behavior, meot volume, and some progression issues.

Kemono Friends 3 PlayStation Version Shut Down After Long Maintenance

1 year 7 months ago

Kemono Friends 3 no longer available on PlayStation 4 and 5

Kemono Friends 3 is no longer available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Appirits announced that it had decided to cease its service for the console port of the free-to-play mobile and PC browser title. The game was playable for only ten days before the team had to put it into an indefinite maintenance period due to an issue that turned out to be unfixable.

Appirits launched the PlayStation 4 version of Kemono Friends 3 with PS5 backwards compatibility support on June 6, 2022. But ten days later, on June 16, 2022, it put the game on an extended maintenance due to a bug where players could not login properly. The team provided an update to the maintenance on July 22, 2022, but it ultimately could never fix the issue that plagued the PlayStation port.

The PS4 port of Kemono Friends 3 was completely separated from the existing mobile and PC browser versions, so players who used the console port's microtransactions could only obtain currency and items for that version. In its apology letter, Appirits promised full refunds to all players who have made purchases on the now-defunct port. It will provide a more thorough schedule and procedure for the refund process at a later time.
