DF Direct Weekly talks PS Plus vs Game Pass, Intel Arc and RTX 3090 Ti

Welcome to the very latest episode of Digital Foundry Direct Weekly - DF's weekly show where the team discuss the latest gaming and technology news, while fielding a barrage of questions from backers of the Digital Foundry Supporter Program. And while the news this week is dominated by Sony's subscription plans, it's the new footage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that catches our eyes. Is it actually running on Nintendo Switch?

So here's the thing - pixel counts on the new content vary between 720p in some instances to 1080p in another (the original was 900p) but what really struck us was the sheer fidelity in the presentation. Character self-shadowing, the quality of the volumetric rendering - it's very good indeed and worlds beyond the presentation of the original game. Just to be clear, we're not for one minute suggesting that Nintendo has delivered a surprise reveal of Switch Pro/Super Switch/Switch Model S/insert name but we would prefer to see transparency on game video sources - and in fairness, that level of transparency is exactly what other platform holders are delivering now.

As for the revised Sony subscription service? It comes across as a rationalisation of its existing offering, combining two different services into one. However, we still have more questions than answers really, especially in terms of what the games actually are that are being offered in the higher-end tiers and of course, the elephant in the room - curation and quality of the emulation for older systems along with the effectiveness of the streaming.

Greg Buchanan on writing No Man's Sky, the Dark Souls TTRPG and Sixteen Horses

It's all going on for Greg Buchanan. His still-warm thriller novel Sixteen Horses looks destined to become one of the books of the year, having filled window displays at Waterstones stores around the UK for the paperback launch in February. I've read it and it's brilliant: dark, disturbing, fearsomely intelligent and utterly compelling. I couldn't put it down.

Such is the popularity of the book that it's going to be adapted for TV! And there's going to be a follow-up book called Consumed, which Buchanan is writing right now, and there's a deal for a third, unrelated book that he's also writing right now, as a kind of creative break from Consumed. We talk about both new projects in the podcast.

But that's not all Buchanan has got going on. He recently announced he will be writing for the new Dark Souls tabletop RPG. It's - as I find out - one of his favourite series of games, and he has a lot of interesting things to say about it and about his current obsession, Elden Ring.

Talking everything reviews with editor Chris Tapsell

Did you know he was nearly a professional footballer? If it hadn't been for a shoulder injury when he was a teenager, we might well have seen him on TV playing for a top club. He had try-outs at a few of them. He might even have been England's goalkeeper - who knows?!

I know he'll hate me saying that.

Nevertheless, fate intervened and we got him. He is Chris Tapsell. He began writing guides at Eurogamer several years ago, and his aptitude for critical writing and Pokémon was obvious. Slowly, his role evolved. He joined the features team, writing about how he appeared in Football Manager one year, the braggart, before sliding with more focus towards reviews.

World of Tanks & Warships Developer Wargaming Is Leaving Russia & Belarus

Today popular developer Wargaming has announced that it’s completely exiting the Russian and Belarusian markets.

Wargaming, mostly known for live service games like World of Tanks and World of Warships, was founded in Minsk, Belarus, in 1998, and has always had a significant part of its business on the Russian market, but has relocated its main headquarters to Nicosia, Cyprus, in 2011.

Now, in response to the war in Ukraine, they’re dropping all ties with Russia and Belarus.

According to the announcement, all of Wargaming’s live game business in the two countries has been transferred to the local Lesta Studio (based in Saint Petersburg, Russia), which is no longer affiliated with Wargaming itself.

The company mentioned it will not profit from the process and expects to “suffer substantial losses” as a result of this decision.

Below you can read the full announcement.

“Over the past weeks, Wargaming has been conducting a strategic review of business operations worldwide. The company has decided it will not own or operate any businesses in Russia and Belarus and will leave both countries.

Effective March 31 the company transferred its live games business in Russia and Belarus to local management of Lesta Studio that is no longer affiliated with Wargaming. The company will not profit from this process either today or going forward. Much to the contrary we expect to suffer substantial losses as a direct result of this decision.

PlayStation Reportedly Lays Off Nearly 90 Employees In North American Offices Due To ‘Global Transformation’

Sony PlayStation 90 Employees Reportedly Laid Off Layoffs

Sony PlayStation has reportedly laid off nearly 90 employees in its North American offices.

This news comes by way of a new report from Axios, which writes that most of the cut positions were in the sales and marketing departments of the company. As for why, PlayStation leadership reportedly cited a “global transformation” of the company’s sales and business operations in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The cuts, which have not been publicly disclosed by Sony or its PlayStation arm, happened last week, one laid-off employee told Axios. More specifically, documents reveal Sony PlayStation is ending its “merchandiser” team in the U.S., with roles like PlayStation Representatives and more terminated. These employees were often responsible for going to brick-and-mortar stores to sell PlayStation products and educate employees there on those products.

Multiple retail marketing jobs were cut as well, according to Axios. One worker laid off told the publication that they felt the company could have done more to find laid-off employees alternate jobs within it. They also said they were disappointed PlayStation had not told the affected departments sooner than they did.

The promising Citizen Sleeper gets a release date and will be on Game Pass

Citizen Sleeper, the really promising new game by In Other Waters developer Jump Over the Age, will be released 5th May.

Excitingly, it'll be available day-one on Xbox Game Pass, on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. It'll also be available on PC from a number of stores (Steam, GOG, Epic, Humble), and - this just in - Nintendo Switch. There's no PlayStation version, sadly.

I played a demo of Citizen Sleeper recently and was impressed. It's a mash-up of a board game and an RPG. There's a lot of descriptive text and dialogue choices, as you'd get in an RPG, and there's levelling up and skills and that kind of thing. But it all plays out in a turn-based, board game kind of way, and quite a lot of what you can do depends on dice you roll at the beginning of each turn. It takes a bit of getting used to.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga review - a complete but cluttered collection

When Kylo Ren said to let the past die, he probably wasn't talking about those old Lego Star Wars games - the ones which already adapted the film's original trilogy, prequels, and a chunk of the Clone Wars. But like a freshly-tweaked George Lucas special edition re-release, the Skywalker Saga does do something a bit like that.

To be fair, those older games are some of the most technically outdated in developer TT Games' portfolio. Time, console hardware and game design have all moved on, and The Skywalker Saga now stands as very different beast. After a lengthy and somewhat troubled development, TT Games has at last completed its nine-film compilation - but that is only half the story. For as long as you spend on the game's main film storylines, you can also spend just as long aimlessly wandering through the game's expansive array of planets, undertaking in the series' largest collectible hunt ever.

The three Star Wars film trilogies can be played in any order, essentially giving three start and end points for your journey around the game's galaxy. As ever, finished levels (there are five per movie) can then be replayed to unlock further secrets, while visited planets get unlocked on your galaxy map. With so much material to adapt, it's perhaps unsurprising these shortcut through some of the saga's less-vital sections, with the series' typical warm humour used to lighten any of its darker moments. What is surprising, however, is how much the game relies on its open world in missions themselves.

Halo Infinite's players are frustrated, and streamers are feeling the pinch

Halo Infinite officially launched last December, receiving rave reviews from critics and fans - including Brendan’s review here at RPS. It peaked with over 200k viewers on Twitch. And for many content creators like Kevin Lynch, aka KevinKoolx, December marked their best month ever in terms of engagement on YouTube and Twitch. Halo, after a decade of somewhat divisive releases, was back. It’s hard to overstate how impressive a feat this was, since the Halo fanbase is almost as divided as the Star Wars one - a seemingly trivial topic like the inclusion of sprint is just one of many decade-long points of contention. But somehow with Halo Infinite 343 Industries created an experience that almost every type of Halo fan could rally behind. But now, just four months after launch, Infinite is struggling to retain its playerbase.

Now the Twitch peaks are below 10k and dropping, with the averages even lower. Lynch says February was his worst month views-wise in over a year. You'd expect some tail off after launch for any game, but every content creator I’ve spoken to echoes this sentiment: engagement for Infinite is abnormally low for a live service-game at the beginning of its multi-year journey, especially for a franchise as big as this. The game plays great, so what’s the problem? I spoke to a number of different streamers and content creators to get their point of view.

Nobody Saves the World Coming to PlayStation and Switch on April 14

Guacamelee and Severed developer Drinkbox Studios announced today that its latest game, Nobody Saves the World, will be launching for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 next week on April 14. The action RPG originally released last January for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass.

The game will retail on all platforms for $24.99, but preorders are open starting today with a 10% discount. PlayStation players will receive both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions with one purchase, and the game will support cross-gen online co-op multiplayer across both versions.

Nintendo Switch players will be able to play alongside a friend in local co-op on the same Switch with a single Joy-Con controller while the system is in Tabletop Mode. The studio also said that all versions of the game, including the previously released for PC and Xbox, will support two-player local co-op in a free update on April 14.

Nobody Saves the World is an action RPG where players shift into different forms to complete quests and puzzles to save the world from “The Calamity.” Some of the forms include a horse, egg, ghost, or a dragon. Although, players can mix and match abilities between different forms, such as an egg that shoot fireballs.

Nobody Saves the World is currently available for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass.

New SnowRunner Trailer Reveals PS5 & Xbox Series X|S Release Date

Earlier today, the FocusEntertainment YouTube channel released a brand-new trailer that revealed the release date for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of SnowRunner. And if you think that this game looks very similar to Spintires, then that connection makes sense because this game is the next iteration of the off-road trucking driving franchise.

SnowRunner is currently already out on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The older console version visuals are a bit limited by hardware, but the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions will come closer to the PC version with 4K resolution and a framerate of 60 FPS. And if you own the PS4 or Xbox One version of the game, there will be a free update coming out alongside the launch on the current-gen Sony and Microsoft console versions.

SnowRunner will release on May 31 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can check out the official SnowRunner PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release date trailer down below.

Dead Or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation Reveals New Girl Amy

Today Koei Tecmo and DMM revealed and released a new heroine added to the roster of their popular free-to-play game Dead Or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation.

Her name is Amy and she’s voiced by Sayumi Suzushiro, who recently offered her voice to Cassandra Cappelli in Atelier Ryza 2.

Amy is 18, she’s 156 cm tall, and she’s an engineer. Her hobbies are collecting gadgets, crosswords, and solo camping. She loves apple cinnamon tea and the color carmine. Her birthday is on June 18.

As usual, she’s available first in a paid-only gacha, so she’ll be unavailable for several months to players that don’t intend to spend an inordinate amount of money for a shamefully low chance to unlock her.

While the SSR percentage to get an SSR costume from the gacha is 1.1%, you actually have only a 0.78% chance to get Amy, because the remaining 0.32% is taken by completely useless dresses for other girls, artificially lowering the odds even further.

It’s worth mentioning that, as usual, Amy is only available in the Japanese version of the game. The English versions of the game on Steam and Johren are behind in content by about a year (despite the unexpected addition of Tina), so their users will have to wait a while before even having a chance at unlocking Amy.

You can see Amy in action in the trailer below.

Overwatch 2 Menu Concept Art Could Hint at an Incoming Battle Pass

Leaked Overwatch 2 concept art has seemingly revealed an incoming Battle Pass feature.

A concept for the Overwatch 2 main menu on ArtStation shows all the options players would expect, such as Play and Shop, alongside a new setting for the Battle Pass, as reported by Attack of the Fanboy.

While the screenshot isn't official and may not represent what features will be in the final version of Overwatch 2, adding credibility is the user who posted it: Blizzard senior UI artist Jayson Kirby.

Alleged%20concept%20art%20from%20Overwatch%202%20-%20Credit%3A%20Jayson%20Kirby%20on%20ArtStation

He held this position on the original Overwatch until March 2020 when he transitioned to an "unannounced project" according to his social media profiles.

An explanation appears under the image states that "the goal was to simplify and refine the Overwatch look even more. The focus of the menus was to really show off the Heroes in close up detail. As the player progressed through the menus, the camera and hero position/poses would change dynamically."

Coromon Review – Blast From the Past

Coromon on PC

It’s hard to talk about new entries in the monster tamer genre without bringing up Pokemon as a comparison, but Coromon — even with a few notable faults — feels like a significantly updated version of those GBA-era games thanks to some unique features that modernize it enough so that it doesn’t lean too hard on its inspirations.

One of the biggest immediate differences here is that, instead of playing the role of a child wandering around the world unattended, you create a character who starts out as a new Battle Researcher in the Lux Solis company. You’re somewhat of a scientist, basically.

You then become a member of the Titan Taskforce looking for mythical creatures called Titans. They’re scattered throughout the land of Velua and your job is to capture six Titan Essences by finding and battling these forces of nature.

What sounds like a straightforward adventure soon becomes something more that involves different planes of existence, otherworldly beings, and plenty of puzzles to solve. The storyline won’t exactly blow you away as you move from one zone to the next and, honestly, it comes second to Coromon’s other bright spots.
