Rune Factory 5 Review – Enduring Rough Edges For Great Reward

1 year 11 months ago

Reviewed on: Switch
Publisher: XSEED Games
Release:
Rating: Teen

Some games, like The Sims and Animal Crossing, draw you in with their comfortable routine, easing you into the mechanics and letting you make the experience your own. The Rune Factory series exemplifies this gameplay style, blending farming, socializing, and dungeon crawling.

As someone who has played the franchise since the Story of Seasons spin-off’s first entry 15 years ago, I’ve always loved how the action/RPG captures a sense of discovery. Whether it’s unearthing a new locale that provides fresh items and monsters to raise or learning more about the eccentric people of the town, there is a satisfying sense of progression in the nigh-endless options for how to spend days. Rune Factory 5 succeeds in this regard, and in many ways, it is one of the better entries in the series. Unfortunately, some technical issues, like horrible framerate, alongside poorly designed combat and upgrade systems, dilute the experience.

Coromon is a Pokémon homage on PC, with more flexible difficulty modes

1 year 11 months ago

I played Pokémon Red back in the day and I've never been able to go back to the simplistic JRPG since. Each game in the series hews so closely to the formula - and rightly so - that I don't have the appetite to play through it a second time.

I'm all for other people making their own original spin on that monster-taming formula. Coromon, out now on Steam, looks like it might be less a spin on those older 2D Pokémon games than a straight homage, however.

Legendary Visual Novel “One” Likely Getting a Remake as Teaser Trailer & Key Art Reveal Heroine

1 year 11 months ago

Japanese developer Nexton has been teasing a 30th-anniversary project for a while, and a new teaser trailer provided a pretty clear indication about its nature.

A previous trailer on March 25 showcased a Japanese street and a girl seen from the back, but the new trailer shows her turning around, revealing herself as Mizuka Nagamori, one of the heroines of the legendary visual novel One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e.

This likely indicates that the game is getting a remake.

Alongside the trailer, we get a full key art showcasing Mizuka herself.

We also get a summer 2022 release window, while platforms have not been announced just yet.

If you’re unfamiliar with One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e (which translates as “To the Radiant Season”), it was released originally as an eroge in 1998 for Windows and then ported to PlayStation one year later with the usual all-ages version.

It’s considered one of the pioneering works of the sub-genres of visual novels that mix science fiction and fantasy elements with romance, and is cited as a source of inspiration, among others, by Type-Moon’s Kinoko Nasu.

You can see both the teaser trailer and key art below.

Halo Infinite: 343 Industries Says 'We Understand the Community Is Simply Out Of Patience'

1 year 11 months ago

While Halo Infinite has been positively received by many, the lack of new content in its multiplayer has led to frustration for some fans. 343 Industries has spoken up on this issue and has said that it does "understand the community is simply out of patience."

343 community director Brian Jarrard took to Reddit to speak to Halo Infinite fans and let them know that the team is "certainly not happy to be unable to meet player and community expectations." However, he also reassures that meaningful content is on the way, it just unfortunately takes time.

"There are indeed a lot of challenges and constraints," Jarrard said. "We're certainly not happy to be unable to meet player and community expectations, it's a difficult situation that's going to take the team time to work through. Right now the focus is on S2 and we'll have more to share on that in the coming weeks."

"Meanwhile a lot of production planning, costing, planning, hiring, etc.. is all happening which doesn't really lend to detailed regular updates. We understand the community is simply out of patience and frankly, I think understandably tired of words. We just need some time for the team to get the details sorted and then we can certainly share as much as we can."

Elden Ring: Margit's Shackle Has a Secret Alternate Use

1 year 11 months ago

Margit's Shackle is an item you can find in Elden Ring that will make the difficult Margit the Fell Omen boss battle easier. However, the item appears to be good for much more as it can seemingly help you discover hidden illusory walls and stop fire-breathing traps.

As reported by GamesRadar, Margit's Shackle can stop Margit the Fell Omen in his tracks for a few seconds when activated, but its usefulness does not end once that great enemy has been felled.

NateThePunk2 on Reddit is one of those who discovered that it can also cause a nearby hidden wall to disappear.

A running theory is that the item sends out an invisible shockwave of sorts that stuns Margit the Fell Omen if he is within a certain range. This same shockwave appears to extend out from the player and reveal illusory walls and stop fire-breathing traps.

Margit's Shackle can be obtained while you are on Patches' questline, and obtaining it is especially helpful if Margit, the game's first major boss, is proving to be too much of a challenge.

If a program is not on the page, you can assume it will not air this week.

Now let's talk about bugs on the site. First, several of you reported that the "All Videos" premium RSS feeds are missing content, and Mr. Rorie has an update on the situation and has filed a ticket! Second, those that have experienced issues video issues related to the RSS feeds, API, set top boxes, and apps. Again, Mr. Rorie has an update and wrote something up about the possible sources of these issues! Finally, many of you are still reporting that you are constantly getting logged out of Giant Bomb. First Episode of Paramount+ Halo TV Series Now on YouTube

1 year 11 months ago

Master Chief has recently moved from Halo video games into the television arena, with the TV series debuting on Paramount+. Despite what reservations fans might have about the move, there is still much to like about the different way it takes in storytelling. However, for those of you who have not yet watched the show, the first episode of the Halo TV series is now live on the Paramount+ YouTube channel.

It is an interesting move for sure, just like a game demo that is meant to entice viewers to jump on another streaming service. With the first episode being free, you can decide for yourself if the Halo show is worth subscribing to Paramount+.

Considering that there are plenty more shows in the works that are using video games as source material, this could be the best way to get players on board. By giving us a taste of what is to come without necessarily investing in a service, the ball is pushed further into consumers’ courts to decide.

Master Chief is not just moving into television, with a crossover with social deduction multiplayer game Among Us now live as well.

If you are wondering just what the fuss is all about, catch the first episode of the Halo TV series on Paramount+ below. Just take note that you will have to be in the right region to watch:

Relive the Magic of Netflix’s Arcane: League of Legends in New Supercut Trailer

1 year 11 months ago

For fans of the League of Legends MOBA, getting to watch the Arcane: League of Legends series on Netflix would have been an amazing journey. In addition to the stunning visuals and excellent storytelling, at its heart was the story of the two sisters of Vi and Jinx. By elaborating more on their backstories, players and viewers alike were drawn more into a complicated relationship, making for intriguing drama. Now, you can experience it all over again or for the first time in a brand new supercut trailer for Arcane: League of Legends.

With over 3 minutes of footage showcasing both Vi and Jinx at their best, or worst depending on how you see things, it is a recollection of how things were, significant events that unfolded, and how the sisters’ relationship became as turbulent as it is.

It is also perhaps the best alternative to rewatching the entire season in preparation for the second season that is currently in production. Judging from the first season, it is likely we will get around nine episodes or so, each running at about 40-45 minutes, for the entire season.

For those new to the Arcane: League of Legends show, here is Netflix’s short and sweet summary of the awesomeness that awaits:

Amid the stark discord of twin cities Piltover and Zaun, two sisters fight on rival sides of a war between magic technologies and clashing convictions.

Elden Ring Ainsel River Guide: Bosses, Treasures, Ranni's Quest

1 year 11 months ago

Ainsel River is one of the optional underground zones in Elden Ring. It’s located beneath Liurnia of the Lakes in the upper west section of the world map, and as such, it can be accessed from the Ainsel River Well in that zone. The Ainsel River Well is only one of the locations from which you’ll be able to access the Ainsel River, but the way this zone is set up can be confusing. It’s split into a south side and a north side, neither of which connect directly unless you leap from the north to the south side in the Uhl Palace Ruins, above where the Hermit Merchant is located.

There are a few important sections to understand, including the Nokstella, Eternal City subregion and its tie to Ranni’s questline, which is necessary to unlock Ranni’s secret ending. You’ll need to enter the north side of the map by finding the Fingerslayer Blade and progressing Ranni’s quest up until you gain access to Renna’s Rise, which contains the Waygate that teleports you to the Ainsel River Main site of grace. Both sides of the zone contain valuable treasure and there is only one merchant located on the south side of the zone.

Friday 'Nite: The Fortnite Season 2 Storyline Is Recycling Drama

1 year 11 months ago

Friday 'Nite is a weekly Fortnite column in which GameSpot editor Mark Delaney takes a closer look at current events in the wide world of Fortnite, with a special emphasis on the game's plot, characters, and lore.

A few weeks ago, before the launch of Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2, I laid out my hopes for the new season, saying that I was interested in playing a more story-driven Season 2 after the debut of Chapter 3 was a bit light in that regard. After two full weeks of story missions and other on-island events, it's safe to say I got my wish; Fortnite Season 2 is packed with new characters critical to the lore and seems intent on including a bundle of new story missions every week. It's just too bad the story being told this season is far too similar to that of previous chapters.

In Chapter 2, Season 7, aliens attacked. The emergence of an intimidating mothership the width of the entire Fortnite island meant doom for all those living on Apollo, or so we thought. Loopers found themselves ideologically divided between those who welcomed the alien invaders, such as Sunny, the ska-dancing host of the welcoming committee, and those who vehemently sought to drive back the extraterrestrial threat, like Doctor Slone and the Imagined Order.

Iron Banter: This Week In Destiny 2 - 2 Tyrants 2 Truths

1 year 11 months ago

Just about every week brings something new to Destiny 2, whether it's story beats, new activities, or interesting new combinations of elements that let players devastate each other in the Crucible. Iron Banter is our weekly look at what's going on in the world of Destiny and a rundown of what's drawing our attention across the solar system. (Sorry, I don't have an April Fools' joke ready, so this is just going to be an actual, serious column.)

We're six weeks beyond the launch of The Witch Queen, and things have slowed down and relaxed a bit. The major story beats of the Season of the Risen seem to be over, Rhulk has been dealt with, and we're coasting through some high-level content like Grandmaster Nightfall Strikes and the Master version of Vow of the Disciple as we wait for Destiny's next content season to roll around at the end of May.

The lull makes this a good time to look to the future to speculate where things are going next. Coming out of The Witch Queen's campaign, with Savathun and Rhulk now dead, it's an open question as to where things are headed. But The Witch Queen has left us with some clues as to what might be on the horizon, as has the Season of the Risen. We might have just wrecked a couple of tyrants, but there are two more who seem to be about to step back into the spotlight: Calus and Rasputin.

Here's What Other Games Should Steal From Elden Ring

1 year 11 months ago

From Software's games have always had a somewhat niche audience, but with the release of Elden Ring, the size of that audience seems to have exploded. The Soulsborne formula works exceedingly well when applied to the template for open-world games, it turns out. In fact, you could argue that it's exploring a strange and enormous world, rather than the usual Souls-style difficulty and mechanics, that makes Elden Ring so fun.

The open-world genre is pretty expansive, and as with major winners before it, like Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed games or Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring is sure to leave a mark on the field. The question is, what should the rest of the open-world genre learn from Elden Ring?

Though there's a lot to like about Elden Ring (as well as quite a few things to be annoyed with), there's one element that developers of other open-world games should take note of and use liberally, because it alters the entire feel and scope of these games: the field boss.

Field bosses in Elden Ring are bosses you run into while just wandering in the world, outside of dungeons. They're bosses, but, you know, out in the field. They're not a major change to open-world design, per se--games like Horizon Forbidden West have monster robot creatures like the Thunderjaw or Tremortusk just wandering around its world, and you might even get a similar boss fight scenario in Breath of the Wild with its tough Lynel enemies scattered throughout the world. The difference is in how Elden Ring handles such encounters, how many of them there are, and what they mean for the world at large.

MLB The Show 22 Best Pitching Controls

1 year 11 months ago

In MLB The Show 22, the difference between an ace pitcher and someone hurling meatballs might come down to your pitching controls more than your actual skills. Of all the different aspects of the game--batting, fielding, et al--pitching has the most options when it comes to controls. That's a good thing, as it means everyone will likely find their preference, but the process of doing that can be daunting. In this guide, we'll break down the many different pitching controls for MLB The Show 22 so you can pick the one that lets you most reliably leave batters looking at strike three.

MLB The Show 22 - Pitching controls explained

There are five pitching control schemes in MLB The Show 22, and like the game's batting controls, they range from simple and arcade-like to deep simulations of real-life pitching. Some will seem quite unwieldy for novices, so take care to find the one that's right for you.

Apex Legends Has Nessie-Firing Mozambique Shotguns For April Fools' Day Weekend

1 year 11 months ago

Not content with simply buffing Apex Legends' Mozambique shotgun to ludicrous levels for April Fools' Day, Respawn has taken things a step further for this year's holiday. This year, the Mozambique has been buffed to fire powerful Nessie plushies.

From now until the end of the weekend (April 3), you'll be able to find spider nests across Kings Canyon, Olympus, and Storm Point. Breaking them will cause a special golden Mozambique shotgun to spawn.

These unique sidearms only spawn with 10 shots, each of which is a Nessie plush that will cutely squeak on its way to torment your foes. If no one is nearby, the Nessie plush will eventually despawn.

Additionally, you'll find that the Prowlers that roam Storm Point have been replaced by violent Nessie plushies. Approach their nests with care--they'll aggressively attack you on sight.

Call Of Duty Season 3: Warzone And Vanguard Start Date, Time, And Details

1 year 11 months ago

The Season 2 Reloaded update is currently underway for both Call of Duty: Warzone and Vanguard, but we're already looking ahead to the upcoming Season 3 content. Here is everything we know so far about the updates coming to Warzone and Vanguard for Season 3.

Call of Duty Season 3 start times

Activision hasn't announced an official start date for Call of Duty Season 3, but given the number of days left in the battle pass, players can expect the new update to arrive around April 26. Call of Duty's seasonal updates usually arrive around 9 AM PT/ 12 PM ET. Updates are always subject to change, but an official announcement and more details should be arriving later this month.

What to expect from Season 3

While nothing is officially confirmed yet for either title, a new season of Call of Duty content usually means there will be a new battle pass to level up, along with additional maps, modes, weapons, operators, and more. Seasonal events are usually popular with Call of Duty, so the timing of Season 3 could bring some late Easter content or spring seasonal events.

Warzone

Warzone recently received major visual updates to the Rebirth Island map with Season 2 Reloaded, and new features like the Weapon Trade Stations and Communication Towers have been added all around the prison island. Of course, with all of this TLC going to Warzone's smaller map, it's quite possible the Season 3 focus will shift back to the main Caldera map.

MLB The Show 22 Best Hitting Controls

1 year 11 months ago

Every year, MLB The Show 22 offers more control schemes than just about any other sports sim. That means you have tons of options across batting, fielding, pitching, and baserunning. In this guide, we'll walk you through all of the hitting controls so you can learn about the pros and cons of each and eventually pick the control scheme that's right for you. Here's our guide on the best batting controls in MLB The Show 22.

MLB The Show - Hitting controls explained

There are three control schemes for hitting, and they range from being arcade-like to something more like a simulation. Your preference will likely come down to how involved you want to be at the plate. There are no objective wrong answers, but you may find that having more or less control of bat placement is the right tactic for you.

Before we jump in, note that the three control schemes share one thing in common: With any mode you choose, you'll get to use a normal swing, contact swing, or power swing. The controls on each platform are as follows:

When Does Apex Legends Season 13 Start?

1 year 11 months ago

All of the focus may be on the new Warriors Collection Event currently taking place during Apex Legends Season 12: Defiance, but that's not stopping most fans from wondering what Respawn has planned next for their beloved battle royale game in the next season. Season 13 will no doubt bring plenty of balance changes, a new character, new events, and more--but when can we expect to dive in?

Apex Legends seasons run for three months each to allow for a total of four seasons per year. Since Season 12 began on February 8, 2022, Respawn is expected to launch Season 13 on May 3. Of course, that date is barring an unexpected delay that could arise for any number of reasons. Season delays have happened in the past, so it's not completely out of the question, but it remains an unlikely scenario.

As for what to expect in Season 13, there's very little concrete information. Early rumors and leaks hint at the introduction of a new legend, Blisk, who may be able to summon a titan that could aid in battle or scan the environment. Additionally, Loba is anticipated to be the next legend to receive an heirloom.

As for now, Season 12 continues to barrel forward with the limited-time return of the fan-favorite Control mode and the introduction of drone specialist Crypto's long-awaited heirloom.

Metal Gear 35th Anniversary Site Is A Prank

1 year 11 months ago

A recently surfaced website claiming to be for the Metal Gear franchise's 35th anniversary is a fake, Konami has confirmed, with the site's creator having also come clean.

The site Metalgear35th.com appeared on April 1, which is suspicious, but some fans still believed it could have been an official Konami project. When the site then posted about a Metal Gear 35th anniversary NFT collection, fans still weren't sure if it was the real deal or not, considering Konami itself has auctioned NFTs in the past as part of Castlevania's 35th anniversary.

Konami has confirmed that they are in no way affiliated with the site in a statement to TechRadar, stating that it was "currently considering how to deal with the site." The site itself has also been updated to make clear that it's all an April Fools' Day joke.

"This website was made as an April Fools joke to parody Konami and the Castlevania 35th Anniversary NFT auction, and is NOT affiliated with Konami, OpenSea, or the Metal Gear series," the website reads. "Nothing on this website should be taken seriously, and there are no actual NFTs for sale."

The website statement goes on to beg Konami not to sue the site's creator, but to instead use its resources to "buy the historical footage licenses needed to put MGS2 and MGS3 back on digital storefronts."

As such, the game doesn't provide detailed statistics about how far away the hole is, nor does it allow players to apply any spin to a ball like other golf games allow. There is also no ability to hit fades and draws, and you cannot see where the ball goes after you've made contact.

In terms of what you can do, you can choose a club, decide how hard to swing ("full send it" is one of the swing power options), and then head out to find your ball and whack it again. In case there was any doubt, this is not a golf game that holds your hand or is anything close to traditional.

"Try to complete a course! They're technically able to be completed! You will hit the ball in the general direction of where you're facing when you select your club/power," reads a line from the game's description.

Damien Crawford's Golf Experience 2022 is available to buy now for whatever you want to pay, starting at $2. Crawford created the game as part of the Games that Shouldn't Be Games Jam 2022.
