E3 2022 Is Completely Cancelled, Digital Included

1 year 11 months ago

E3 has been completely canceled this year, IGN reports with further confirmation by VentureBeat.

In a statement to VentureBeat, the Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, said the following:

"We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19. Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022."

The ESA announced in January that a physical convention would not take place but an online-only version was still a possibility. Today's news broke when IGN’s Rebekah Valentine confirmed the contents of an email sent to Razor PR lead Will Powers, who tweeted that it stated a digital E3 was no longer happening as well. It appears these emails were sent to all of the ESA’s partners prior to the announcement.

The Electronic Wireless Show episode 180: the best games to adapt into a TV show special

1 year 11 months ago

This week, the Electronic Wireless Show podcast is talking about TV adaptations of video games, specifically the best games that would make for great telly box shows, rather than what's already been turned into visual screen fodder (*cough* Halo *cough*). Alice Bee is away this week, adapting to life in a brand-new country, leaving Nate and Matthew to dwell on the merits of The Mandalorian, and whether a show following the life of a Halo grunt would be better than big flashy Master Chief quips.

Matthew puts forward the idea of a Hitman TV show in the vein of Succession, focusing not on Agent 47, but the elite corporate villains he assassinates, as they deal with various cast members being offed in mysterious circumstances. Nate, meanwhile, wants to go all-in on a Dungeon Keeper sitcom, and The Office-like monster relationships therein.

Microsoft reportedly launching an Xbox Game Pass family plan later this year

1 year 11 months ago

Microsoft is reportedly set to plug a gap in its Game Pass line-up by launching a new family plan, enabling five users to access the service using one subscription, later this year.

That's according to Windows Central's Jez Corden, who, citing "trusted sources familiar with with Microsoft's efforts", reports the family plan has been in the works for some time as Microsoft navigated issues around royalty distribution and third-party licenses. Those kinks are presumably close to being ironed out now, however, with Corden suggesting an official unveiling may happen relatively soon.

Why Roberta Williams Is Re-embarking on a Colossal Cave Adventure in 2022

1 year 11 months ago

Even after she retired from making adventure games, Sierra On-Line co-founder Roberta Williams never stopped having adventures.

After a legendary career as a pioneer of the adventure genre, creating games like King's Quest, Mystery House, Phantasmagoria, and many more, Williams has spent her retirement sailing all over the world with her husband and Sierra co-founder Ken Williams. And she's still creating, too, having just published her first novel last year - a historical fiction entitled Farewell to Tara.

"I do adventure games and I live my life as an adventure," she tells me in an interview at GDC last week. "I love adventure! I'll go and get it wherever I can get it."

Roberta%20Williams

But when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted lockdowns that halted many of her usual adventures, Williams needed a new project. At the time, Ken was learning Unity with the intent of making a new game of his own when Williams suddenly remembered a game that had been very, very special to her years ago: Colossal Cave Adventure.

"Without Colossal Cave, Sierra On-Line would never have existed, and I would not have my career, or Ken either," she says.

Someone Has Modded a Clever Recreation of Elden Ring's Missing 'Age of Absolute' Ending

1 year 11 months ago

A video is circulating purporting to show off a datamined secret seventh ending to Elden Ring that hasn't been seen before — but as cool as the video is, it's sadly fake. [Update 4/1/2022: The creator has confirmed it was an April Fool's joke.]

Spoilers for the ending of Elden Ring follow read at your own risk!

The video, posted by Elden Ring YouTuber Garden of Eyes conveniently around April Fool's Day, shows off the supposed "Age Absolute" ending. The first half of the video is the same as other endings, where the Tarnished restores Marika's severed head to her body. The differences begin as a five-fingered hand begins to appear in the background behind them as they do.

The scene then cuts to the throne room shown in other endings, but instead of the Tarnished sitting on the Elden Throne, the five-fingered hand is present, with the Tarnished appearing to worship it. The voice-over that plays is also the same as other endings, except for the final line: "The Age Absolute."

Diablo 4's art style promises a "return to darkness"

1 year 11 months ago

I remember when Diablo 3 was released. One of the (many) talking points around the game was its art style, and the perception that Blizzard had made the art style lighter and friendlier versus the gothic greys of the previous two games. The criticism seemed a little overblown and silly at the time, but here we are reading the latest quarterly update on the development of Diablo 4. It focuses on the new game's art, and the phrase "return to darkness" is used repeatedly.

E3's digital event now officially ditched following cancellation of in-person show

1 year 11 months ago

E3 has officially ditched its digital-only event this year, which, following the cancellation of its in-person show back in January, means there'll be no E3 at all in 2022.

E3's 2022 started to look shaky in January, when show organiser the ESA confirmed it wouldn't be holding a physical event this year due to potential risks from covid - though several journalists subsequently suggested it had actually been scrapped before Christmas - marking the third year in a row E3's in-person component has been cancelled.

E3 2022 Canceled; Will Return “Reinvigorated” in 2023

1 year 11 months ago

Today we learn that the ESA has decided not to host E3 2022.

Rumors circulated earlier today with Razer PR lead Will Powers sharing the gist of a mail he received mentioning that the show was canceled.

A few minutes ago the ESA itself confirmed to IGN that the information was indeed accurate, but the organization plans to bring E3 back “reinvigorated” both physically in Los Angeles and online.

“We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.

We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.”

Earlier this year, it was announced that the show was to be held exclusively online due to remaining concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that there won’t be gaming events this summer, as Tokyo Game Show in Japan and Gamescom in Germany are still happening.

Neo Geo Pocket Color Classic Big Bang Pro Wrestling Comes to Switch

1 year 11 months ago

It’s likely that not everyone will remember the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It came out in 1999. The 16-bit Big Bang Pro Wrestling was an exclusive title but originally released only in Japan in 2000. Fans of SNK wrestling games are in luck, though, as Big Bang Pro Wrestling is available for the Nintendo Switch as of today.

Big Bang Pro Wrestling offers:

ten fighters to choose from, including fledging newbies, masked wrestlers, and hulking heavyweights. Each wrestler comes with their own personalized Finishing Move. Players will have to fulfill the proper conditions and let it rip to win the fight. Change up the rules with exciting modes like Coffin Death Match where your goal is to toss your opponent into a coffin. Or, try to steal away the reward in Reward Death Match to really stick it to your opponent.

There is a video release coinciding with this release that shows off gameplay and crisp visuals that has come to be expected from remasters of 16-bit games.

The video makes it seem that Big Bang Pro Wrestling can be played as if players were in fact holding a Neo Geo Pocket Color. It’s proof that handhelds haven’t always been sleek and slim. You also won’t eat through batteries this way.

Nintendo Shows Off How Miis Will Look in Switch Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports, a spiritual successor to Wii Sports, will let players create and play with unique avatars. But that doesn’t mean Miis are going anywhere.

In Nintendo Switch Sports, players can create a Sports Mate, a detailed avatar they can create and customize. But in the original Wii Sports, players were able to use Miis as their athletic counterparts. Well, they still can in Nintendo Switch Sports.

In the official Nintendo Switch Sports overview trailer, Nintendo detailed the process of creating a Sports Mate. But for the fans of Miis, you can still use your custom avatar, though their head will be attached to a slightly more detailed body as you can see in the image below.

You might want to create a Sports Mate.

Jokes aside, it’s nice that the upcoming Nintendo Switch Sports will have the option of using either a Sports Mate or Mii avatar.

Though not a direct sequel, Nintendo Switch Sports will bring various, motion-controlled sports minigames to the Switch. Nintendo will also be adding new sports games post-launch with golf planned for Fall 2022.
