Sony Wants to Help Bungie Turn Its Franchises Into Movies

2 years 2 months ago

Sony says that Bungie wants to turn its games into multimedia franchises – and the PlayStation creator says that it could help the developer make movies.

A lot has been made of how much Bungie will offer Sony, after a $3.6 billion acquisition was announced this week. However, speaking during an earnings call Q&A, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki was asked what benefits Bungie itself saw in being acquired by Sony.

Totoki's answer covered areas such as hiring and employee retention, but moved onto Sony's position as a multimedia company: "[It's] not just for [the] gaming area, but the multi-using of IP and merchandising of IP – like a game title maybe put into movies.

"Bungie want to nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner, and that's their hope. For that, we believe we can help that – we have [Sony] Pictures and [Sony] Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big."

It's not the first time we've heard about Bungie's multimedia aspirations. Last year, the studio began hiring for a development role to "drive projects that extend the Destiny franchise into new categories including TV, films, books, comics, and audio formats."

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon DLC Will Add Online Multiplayer

2 years 2 months ago

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon DLC Will Add Online Multiplayer

As part of Yacht Club Games Presents 2022, the company announced both new projects and new additions to existing titles. Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is a good example, as it is getting a free update and DLC packs that will do things like add characters and online multiplayer.

It seems the Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon free update will arrive first, as it was billed as “coming soon” during the announcement. It will include five major additions, aside from the typical fixes you expect from an update. Random Knight, a randomized character option, will be added. He transforms into another unlocked character at the start of each run. Respawn Turn Speed can be altered in options. All objects and opponents will have portraits and enhanced descriptions, to help people better know how to deal with them. You’ll see how strong the CPU is, so you know what to expect. There will also be multiplayer tips to help you improve you skills.

As for the DLC, three packs are on the way. It also has a “coming soon” date. Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon online multiplayer is coming. (Only local is available now.) It will include a ranking system and matchmaking. The PC version will get mod support. The example shown hinted at people creating custom characters. More playable characters, enemies, relics, and bosses were also teased. During that segment, Mona showed up.

Tetsuya Nomura Discussed His FFV Monster Designs in a New Final Fantasy Interview

The latest Final Fantasy XI We are Vana'diel interview is now online and in it Tetsuya Nomura and Akihiko Matsui talked about Nomura's art and designs, particularly in regard to FFV. The interview talked about how Nomura got started with Square Enix. While things kicked off with an aside about his first day working on FFIV, it also went into his work on characters like Gilgamesh from FFV. A common theme that comes up is discussing how he'd make characters look "cool."

This came up as an explanation for why Tetsuya Nomura’s monsters’ designs for FFV were too big. He mentioned getting “no guidance whatsoever” when getting started as a designer. He said the following.

I was less than half my current age and was just drawing illustrations without any professional knowledge. When I was drawing monsters for FFV, a senior colleague from the graphics team instructed me to make my designs smaller because they were larger than the specified size. I pouted, “Okay, but it looks cooler if it’s bigger,” which made them furious.

Matsui also brought up the thought of Tetsuya Nomura striving for “cool” designs when working on Final Fantasy games like FFV.

Dying Light 2 Review – Post-Apocalyptic Thrills

2 years 2 months ago

Dying Light 2 on PlayStation 5

Following on from the whimsical chaos of its Dead Island IP, Techland’s original Dying Light stood apart from its open-world counterparts for its pleasing combination of parkour traversal and melee combat. It shined as a true gameplay-driven sandbox experience, one that felt clunky, awkward, and slightly unpolished at times but uniquely satisfying and immensely entertaining to control. It was big fun, plain and simple. For its anticipated sequel, though, which has been many years in the making, the developer has sought to add new layers to the formula for something deeper, more engaging, and more complete in nature.

Its solution, as has been the case for so many large-scale open-world games these days, is a dialing up of the role-playing mechanics and the introduction of branching dialog story elements. There are a host of other fine-tunings and gameplay improvements, too, of course, but it’s these two features that are at the core of what makes the sequel grander and more ambitious than its predecessor. Dying Light 2’s open-world is still every bit the exciting playground of the original, but there’s a greater context to its existence and a much larger degree of interaction with the story and characters that bring it to life.

PlayStation Plans To Launch 10 Live Service Games By 2026, But Don’t Expect Single Player Output To Stop

2 years 2 months ago

PlayStation Sony Bungie Live Service Games

Sony released its quarterly financial results yesterday and in it, CFO Hiroki Totoki revealed that PlayStation plans to launch 10 live service games by March 2026.

This isn’t surprising, considering the company essentially just invested $3.6 billion in developing live service games by acquiring Bungie earlier this week. However, 10 games is a lot. Ten live service games in four years is very ambitious, but it seems Sony and PlayStation are going to rely on Bungie’s expertise in the genre a lot, not to mention, Bungie has its own original IP in the works too.

“The strategic significance of this acquisition lies not only in obtaining the highly successful Destiny franchise, as well as major new IP Bungie is currently developing, but also incorporating into the Sony group the expertise and technologies Bungie has developed in the live game services space,” Totoki said, as reported by The Verge. “Through close collaboration between Bungie and PlayStation Studios we aim to launch more than 10 live service games by the fiscal year ending March 2026.”

Halo Infinite Update On Co-op, Forge, And Seasonal Roadmap Coming Later Than Expected

2 years 2 months ago

Halo Infinite Campaign Co-Op, Forge, Seasonal Roadmap Multiplayer

343 Industries revealed last year, before the launch of Halo Infinite, that the game would not ship with campaign co-op or a Forge mode. Halo Infinite creative director Joseph Staten said around that time that an update regarding these two modes, and a seasonal roadmap for the shooter, would arrive in January, but that didn’t happen.

Staten has now revealed that the planned Halo Infinite update on the game’s seasonal roadmap, co-op, and Forge has been delayed. The reason why is so that the team can have more time to share concrete plans.

Forget Sony, my concern for Destiny 2's future is still Bungie's love of grinding

2 years 2 months ago

As the consolidation of the games industry continues, Sony buying Bungie is the acquisition that might most directly affect me, someone who has played over 2000 hours of Destiny 2. Bungie have said things will continue as normal on all platforms. But beyond the usual issues with consolidation and platformholders buying studios, the concerns I have for Destiny 2's future stem from the same old source: Bungie's own decisions. The grind needs to end.

Ghostwire: Tokyo got its first (and decidedly enigmatic) showing back at E3 2019; one year on, Tango Gameworks revealed the game to be some sort of action-focussed first-person horror experience unfolding on the rain-slicked streets of Tokyo, where players must energetically thrust their supernatural abilities at strikingly designed spirits known as The Visitors.

Ghostwire: Tokyo Release Date, New Gameplay Reveal Announced

2 years 2 months ago

Another long-awaited game is joining the stacked release lineup of February and March, as PlayStation has announced Ghostwire: Tokyo will launch on March 25, 2022. In addition to the release date news, PlayStation is also holding an official showcase for the game tomorrow, February 3 at 2 p.m. PT. You can watch the showcase on PlayStation's YouTube page.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is the next game from Shinji Mikami's Tango Gameworks, developers of The Evil Within. It was first announced as a PlayStation exclusive during Bethesda's E3 2019 conference. Since then, Bethesda and all studios under its umbrella have been acquired by Microsoft, but the game is still launching as a timed console exclusive on PS5 and PC.

The title is an action-adventure game that will see players take on paranormal threats called The Visitors. These creatures take on forms like a child in a yellow raincoat, a bride who never got married, and other manifestations of loss and separation.

Dying Light 2's Day One Patch Includes Over 1,000 Fixes

2 years 2 months ago

Dying Light 2's day one patch will include more than 1,000 bug fixes on top of the thousand made since the game went gold.

Bugs present in the pre-release version of the game included dialogues that blocked story progression, regular crashing, and missing sound and voice-over audio.

IGN's review of Dying Light 2 came with a Bug Alert recommending players with a low bug-tolerance to avoid the game until it had received such updates.

Developer Techland said in a statement: "Within the last two weeks we added over a thousand fixes and improvements on all the platforms.

"You can expect the day one patch with another thousand tweaks to go live on consoles within the next few days, and of course, we are continuing our efforts to improve the PC version in real-time."

IGN said Dying Light 2 was "good", and "an ambitious zombie action adventure that's packed with top-notch parkour, an awesome open world, and every painful bug in the book."

Techland recently delayed the Nintendo Switch version of the game, saying it will no longer release on February 4 but instead "within six months".

It also promised that Dying Light 2 will receive five years of post-launch content on top of the supposed 500 hours it takes to fully complete the game.

Pokémon Company Releases a 'Sound Library' for Listening to Diamond & Pearl Tracks

2 years 2 months ago

The Pokémon Company has released an online sound library allowing users to listen to music tracks and sound effects from the original Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games.

The sound library has 149 different tracks and sound effects from the original 2006 versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl but doesn't feature any of the updated music from last year's remakes.

Users can select their six favourite songs to combine in a "party track", a reference to the Pokémon games' six-character party system. A number of curated playlists are also available to play, named Adventurous, Power-Up, Challenge, and Relax.

It's not clear if this is a one-off project, or if other Pokémon (or Nintendo) games' tracks could be released as their own libraries in future.

Users can also download the music to use in their own creative pursuits and performances, and a single from Japanese performer and DJ Alan Shirahama has already been released, which samples elements of the library.

Shirahama, who became popular in 2012 as a member of Japan's Generations pop group, has created a song from the music called "On my way to Glory" that was released alongside the sound library itself.

He said: "To be given an opportunity to arrange Pokémon game music like this is such a fulfilling and wild experience for me. My younger self would have been overjoyed by the very idea. I like my beats to roll with a story-like structure and momentum, so I started off by conceptualizing how a Pokémon Trainer's everyday life would play out."

Fire Emblem Heroes 5th Anniversary Art Shared

The Fire Emblem Heroes 5th anniversary is upon us in 2022, and to commemorate it Intelligent Systems and Nintendo shared art in honor of it. All of the designs are from artists who previously worked on the game. They depict a number of characters who've shown up over the years as units. In many cases, their "alt" designs are used. There are 15 images total.

In each case, the artists who designed these Fire Emblem Heroes 5th anniversary works of art previously contributed character designs. For example, Daisuke Izuka contributed a work featuring Fire Emblem Heroes original characters Gustav and Henriette in their Days of Devotion (Valentine’s Day) outfits. Izuka contributed art for both the mobile game and Cipher card game. Senri Kita contributed art of Marth. In addition to her work here, she worked on mainline installments like Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and its direct sequel Radiant Dawn.

Report: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Delayed Until 2023

2 years 2 months ago

According to Bloomberg, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice league, is being delayed into sometime in 2023. The game, which is being developed by Rocksteady the team behind the acclaimed series of Arkham Batman games, was originally slated to release sometime in 2022. Considering the lack of news since its announcement back in August of 2020, it shouldn’t come as a total shock to many that it will release in 2023 instead.

The game is a co-op multiplayer game where players control members of the Suicide Squad, a group of antiheroes and villains that are being forced to work together to stop former heroes, such as Superman, now turned villains. The exact reason isn’t explained yet, but the villain Brainiac is rumored to be in the game, so that’s a likely reason.

Watch the initial announcement trailer if you want a little reminder of what you’re waiting an extra year for.

MLB The Show 22 MVP Edition Manga-Inspired Cover Art Revealed

2 years 2 months ago

Earlier this week it was announced that MLB The Show 22 will feature the 2021 American League MVP, Shohei Ohtani, on the cover. We also got a release date of Apr. 5 and it was revealed that the game will come to a Nintendo console for the first time. But the MLB The Show news didn’t stop there. Today, a new trailer revealed the manga-inspired cover art for the MVP Edition of MLB The Show 22.

The trailer begins by showing two animated baseballs players. One is standing with a bat on their shoulder on the right side of a brick wall and the other is a pitcher standing to the left of the wall. Then a question appears, “How do you achieve the unachievable?” Then the words more power appear and the baseball player smacks a ball through the brick wall. After that, the words more heat pop up and the pitcher hurls a ball through the wall.

The two players keep going back and forth with different words appearing like more discipline, more determination. At this point, it’s revealed that both the pitcher and the batter are Shohei Ohtani. They eventually completely demolish the brick wall between them with the power of their hits and pitches. Then it cuts to real MLB footage of Ohtani pitching and hitting with fire superimposed over the ball and his bat.

After showing some highlights of Ohtani, the manga-inspired cover is revealed. The back features the manga version of Ohtani with a bat on his shoulder. And from the front, you can see the Japanese ballplayer holding a bat in his left hand and tossing a baseball up in the air with his right. He also appears to have a second bat tucked into his belt almost like where a samurai would sheath their sword.

Rey Mysterio Takes On Damien Priest In WWE 2K22 Gameplay Breakdown

2 years 2 months ago

On the road to WWE 2K22’s March release, 2K released the first of its Ringside Report series. These developer commentary videos are designed to showcase in-game footage while providing developer commentary on the game’s systems. This first installment hones in on the in-ring action itself, detailing the redesigned combat system and streamlined philosophy.

For the first time, we got to see footage of an actual in-game match between cover star Rey Mysterio and current United States Champion, Damien Priest. The 2K team spends much of the video emphasizing the game’s increased accessibility thanks to a more simplified control scheme that makes 2K22 easier for newcomers to grasp. Though the game is more of a pick-up-and-play experience, there’s still plenty of depth for veterans in learning how to execute strike/grapple combos (which can be customized) and time reversals.

Click here to watch embedded media

While standard reversals can negate most actions, combos and grapples can only be stopped by executing a new counter called the Breaker. This manever can only be triggered by hitting the same strike or grapple input being used against you. That means predicting your opponent's attack works to your advantage.

PlayStation 5 Surpasses 17 Million Units Shipped

2 years 2 months ago

PlayStation 5 Sony Sales Numbers

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is selling quite well, but it is still lagging behind the PlayStation 4’s shipped numbers at this same time in its lifetime.

The company released its quarterly results today and it revealed that 17.3 million PS5s have been shipped so far, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. At this same point in its lifetime, the PS4 had shipped 20.2 million units, representing a lag in shipped numbers for the PS5. However, the PS4 had virtually no supply issues at this point in its life cycle whereas getting a PS5 is still extremely difficult.

Click here to watch embedded media

Overall, for Sony’s last quarter, sales for its games division dipped 8% year-over-year, ending on December 31 at $7.1 billion versus $7.7 billion on December 31, 2020. Sony attributed this dip in sales to a decrease in hardware and peripherals sales, which is not surprising considering PS5 supply issues (not to mention, people aren’t going to be buying DualSense controllers and other accessories if they haven’t yet been able to buy a PS5).

MLB The Show 22 Celebrates Shohei Ohtani With Manga-Themed Cover By Afro Samurai Creator

2 years 2 months ago

MLB two-way star Shohei Ohtani will grace the cover of MLB The Show 22, and a superhero manga version of the athlete will appear on the game's collector's editions. In a fun collaboration, the art was done by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki.

Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, MLB The Show developer Sony San Diego said it wanted to use the collector's editions as an opportunity to incorporate Ohtani's love of manga and anime. Fittingly, Ohtani grew up reading "Major", a manga series about a baseball pitcher who could also hit home runs. It also turns out Okazaki is a huge Shohei Ohtani fan, which led him to partner with Sony to create an anime-style superhero version of the MLB star for the steelbook cover. You can take a look at the result below.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human Performance Review - PS5 vs Series X vs PC

2 years 2 months ago

Popping out for a bite to eat took on a brand-new meaning with 2015’s Dying Light, and now again with its bigger, darker, and even more dystopian sequel. Light and dark plays a big part in this vampiric tale, including ray tracing editions for new-gen consoles and higher-end PCs. So, let’s sample the bits and bytes of Dying Light 2 Stay Human.

Parkouring our way through the console & PC versions, we have a collection of modes and settings to work through. The last-gen versions weren’t ready in time for coverage in this review, so we instead will concentrate on the Xbox Series X, Series S, and PS5 along with our AMD-powered PC with an RX6800 GPU. First up, let’s examine the three modes Techland’s proprietary Chrome engine (or C-engine) offers – on Series X and PS5, at least.

Console Game modes

Two of the three modes are 30fps, with Quality mode boasting ray tracing that adds full-contact hardening sun shadows, enabling soft dithered shadows across both static and dynamic objects. These are a big increase in the quality and accuracy of shadows and can drastically change certain scenes due to the upgrade, but they are expensive. In addition, ambient occlusion of a screen space variety and screen space shadows all combine to create more accurate lighting and darker tones in recessed areas in both indoor and outdoor sections. Reflections also offer better quality than other modes, but are still screen space in nature. All these are identical in quality and coverage on Series X and PS5, but some other minor bugs do crop up.

After easily catching them, the people of this world realize you have a remarkable trait. You aren’t afraid of Pokemon. To stay in Jubilife Village, you need to make yourself useful to the Galaxy Expedition Team. That means helping them in their goals. Namely, you research Pokemon by battling, catching, and interacting with them to complete the first Hisui Pokedex, help the Diamond and Pearl clans to encourage relations between them and Galaxy, and maybe complete the requests of some folks in the village.

Gran Turismo 7 is the first mainline entry in the series since 2013's Gran Turismo 6 back on the PlayStation 3. Sure, Gran Turismo Sport was released during the PlayStation 4 generation, but that game left fans wanting more and also equally excited about what was in the pipeline. It turns out, what was in the pipeline was the next full Gran Turismo and after watching a behind-closed-doors preview of it recently, Game Informer editor Wesley LeBlanc came away excited for "the real driving simulator."

As someone who's never dabbled in the Gran Turismo series beyond a few hours each entry, he was looking for something in GT7 to entice him to stick around. What he found was a couple of new modes and features that seemingly aim to do just that, although we won't know until the full release in March. However, if you're a hardcore GT fan, don't worry – all the bells and whistles you've come to expect in these games are present, looking (and sounding) better than ever.

In this New Gameplay Today, Wesley is joined by fellow Game Informer editors Ben Reeves and John Carson, all hosted by video editor Alex Stadnik. They talk about new features, returning favorites, being funny on the racetrack, and more. Thanks for watching, and be sure to let us know what you think of this upcoming racing game from PlayStation and Polyphony Digital.

Gran Turismo PlayStation 5 PlayStation 4 State of Play Polyphony Digital

The first State of Play of 2022 was all about Gran Turismo 7 and if you're even mildly excited about Polyphony Digital's upcoming simulation racer, this showcase is a must-watch. Not only does it showcase some of the bleeding-edge graphics the Gran Turismo series is known for, but it reveals that GT7 is much more than just a racing game.

Of course, it is absolutely still a racing game first and foremost but if competitive racing isn't your jam, GT7 seems jam-packed with other things for you to do and enjoy.

"Over its 25-year history, the Gran Turismo series has demonstrated a serious love and respect for cars," GT7 producer Kazunori Yamauchi said at the top of the showcase. "What's more, Gran Turismo 7 represents the 25th anniversary of the series. Gran Turismo 7 will represent the pinnacle of our journey. We have designed GT7 so that those who have never come into automotive culture until now can really get to know the deep, rich world of cars."

This State of Play touched on that easy introduction into the world of cars for newcomers, too. Let's break down everything show in it:

Gran Turismo 7 Preview Sony PlayStation Polyphony Digital

Gran Turismo Sport was released in 2017, and although some aspects earned praise, it left fans wanting more while also exciting them about what’s to come in the next game. The DNA of Sport, which was mostly focused on competitive multiplayer, seems to be present in GT7, but after previewing the game, it’s clear that this sequel offers so much more.

And that’s exciting for someone like me who has never really made it beyond a few hours into a Gran Turismo game. I went into this preview looking for reasons to be excited for Polyphony Digital’s latest love letter to cars and came away with enough to feel like GT7 is worth checking out.

Let me get this out of the way right up front: if you’re a GT fan, you are in for a treat with GT7. It features more than 400 cars, 34 locations, 97 layouts, more than 100 racing events, over 650 aerodynamic parts, 130 types of wheels, 1200 colors of measured paint data, and so much more. All the bells and whistles are here, and of course, they’ve never looked better thanks to the PlayStation 5. Plus, the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are sure to make races through Trial Mountain, Deep Forest, and Daytona more immersive than ever before. Producer Kazunori Yamauchi says these additions will make it feel like you’re holding a car in your hands with the track beneath you.
