Mina the Hollower Is Shovel Knight Studio Yacht Club Game's Next Project

2 years 1 month ago

Yacht Club Games, creators of Shovel Knight have announced it's working on a new IP called Mina the Hollower, and like her platforming predecessor, Mina looks to build upon some classic inspirations.

Unveiled during a presentation on G4 this afternoon called Yacht Club Games Presents, Mina the Hollower is a new title that shares elements of The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania. Not straying far from Shovel Knight's retro aesthetics, Mina looks like it was ripped from the Game Boy Color era. As Mina, you'll be whipping enemies, burrowing into the ground, and equipping various sidearms and trinkets to survive and save a cursed island full of deadly baddies and bosses.

Life Is Strange Remastered Collection Now Available, Launch Trailer Released

2 years 1 month ago

Life is Strange: Remastered Collection

Life is Strange was a surprise hit from DontNod way back in 2015 when it was released episodically over the year. Life is Strange: Before the Storm was also a hit, but not so much a surprise because after the original game, we all knew what DontNod and the Before the Storm team, Deck Nine, were capable of.

Since the 2015 release of Life is Strange, we’ve received two mainline sequels in Life Is Strange 2 and Life is Strange: True Colors. The storylines have become even more branching and naturally, the visuals and performance of the series have improved. Now, those improvements have made their way back to the first two Life is Strange games and both are playable today in the Life is Strange: Remastered Collection.

Click here to watch embedded media

As the name implies, the collection features Life is Strange and Before the Storm remastered with increased visual fidelity and faster (and smoother) frame rates. You can check out what that looks like for yourself in the new launch trailer released today.

Electronic Arts Admits Battlefield 2042 Did Not Meet Expectations; Commits to “Realize its Full Potential”

2 years 1 month ago

Today, during Electronic Arts’ quarterly financial conference call for analysts and investors, chief executive officer Andrew Wilson discussed the performance of Battlefield 2042.

Wilson admitted that the game did not meet expectations.

He then mentioned that it’s an ambitious game and the development team pushed innovation across many dimensions like scale, new modes, dynamic gameplay, and more.

Yet, developing the game with the teams working from home proved challenging. EA believed it was ready to be put in players’ hands, and while it launched with “strong stability,” as more players experienced the game “unanticipated performance issues” that needed to be addressed cropped up.

Wilson also admitted that some of the design choices did “did not resonate with everyone in the community.”

That being said, he pledged the full commitment to realize the full potential of the game. Major updates have already been implemented and there is more to be done.

Meaningful updates will continue in the weeks ahead, while the first season of live service content has been shifted to the early summer.

Later in the conference call, chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen confirmed that the game “disappointed.”

Battlefield 2042 is available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.

New Destiny 2: Witch Queen Weapons & Gear Trailer Teases Crafting & New Exotics

2 years 1 month ago

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is only a few weeks away now at this point. It’s been an odd lead-up to the next big expansion to Destiny 2. For starters, well, Bungie just got bought by Sony so that’s a thing. But also, it’s been a cycle where it feels like Bungie has released so many trailers and little bits of information but has actually said so very little. This trailer does a better job of getting into some harder details.

We know that crafting and new exotics are coming to Destiny 2. We don’t yet know how crafting will work nor do we have an exhaustive list of exotics in The Witch Queen yet. This trailer doesn’t really tell us too much about weapon crafting other than when the video appears to tie crafting to various elements and Alchemy that has been teased during some of the other videos Bungie has released over the last few months.

The trailer does give more substantial information about the new exotic gear, however. For starters, there are going to be three class-exclusive Glaives. It’s unclear from the trailer if they are exotics. The Titan Glaive will deploy a protective bubble. The Warlock glaive will deploy a healing turret. And the Hunter Glaive will shoot out chain lightning projectiles.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus Is Full of Diamond and Pearl Character Ancestors

2 years 1 month ago

Pokemon Legends: Arceus takes place in the Sinnoh region of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl before it was known as Sinnoh and hundreds of years before the events of the fourth generation of Pokemon. Naturally, some of the locations have corollaries, such as Jubilife Village to Jubilife City, but what's even more fascinating are the number of NPCs that appear to be the ancestors of characters in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

Some of the resemblances are more uncanny than others, and there are probably many more that require a trained eye to spot. But we've tracked down a number of the most interesting ancestors of Diamond and Pearl characters hidden in Arceus for you here.

Minor spoilers for Pokemon Legends: Arceus characters and story below.

Shovel Knight Developer Announces a Brand New Game, Mina the Hollower [Updated]

2 years 1 month ago

Update 02/02/22: Mina the Hollower has already met its initial Kickstarter goal, just hours after the campaign launched.

At time of writing, the game has accrued more than $370,000 USD, comfortably passing its original $311,000 goal. No stretch goals have been announced as yet but, judging by Shovel Knight's campaign, we can likely expect some to pop up along the way.

The developer of Shovel Knight has announced a brand new game called Mina the Hollower, a top-down action adventure in a Game Boy Colour style.

At its Yacht Club Games Presents event, the developer launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the new project, promising a "bone-chilling action adventure" with an 8-bit aesthetic redefined for the modern era.

The studio's release of Shovel Knight in 2014 hurtled it into mainstream success and spawned several spin-offs, but it hasn't revealed a new franchise until today (Yacht Club has published non-Shovel Knight games, but never developed one itself).

Mina the Hollower will, like Shovel Knight before it, combine classic and modern styles – and will feature 60 frames per second combat in a world of mystery and horror.

Yacht Club Games director and designer Alec Faulkner said the studio was returning to Kickstarter to recreate the feeling of Shovel Knight's development, which was also funded through the crowdfunding service.

Team17 Announces, Then Cancels, Worms NFT Plans Due To Fan And Studio Pushback

2 years 1 month ago

Yesterday, publisher Team17 announced the MetaWorms NFT project. Basically, the plan was to create NFTs based on its popular Worms license with the help of NFT maker, Reality Gaming Group. Team17 billed these NFTs as environmentally friendly because they were a “side chain” of Ethereum and produced using RGG’s carbon neutral servers. Team17 even had plans to donate a portion of the revenue earned from NFT sales to global sustainability firm Coins 4 Planet and its Refeed Farms initiative, which promotes using worm beds as a cleaner method to process waste. The NFTs themselves were, of course, just various images of Worms characters, which you can see in the header up top.

As we’ve recently seen in other instances of studios announcing NFT plans, fans were not pleased and expressed as much on social media. That’s not surprising; what did come from left field was the fact that some of Team17’s studio partners were apparently unaware of the initiative and became similarly upset. As a result, a few of these developers took to Twitter to independently announce that their titles will not support NFTs.

That includes Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic:

Electronic Arts Discusses Possibility of TV Series from its Gaming IP & Acquisitions

2 years 1 month ago

Today, during Electronic Arts’ quarterly financial conference call for analysts and investors, chief executive officer Andrew Wilson was asked to comment on the possibility of creating TV series or similar content from EA’s IPs.

Wilson mentioned that video game IP is now some of the most culturally relevant IP in all of entertainment, and he believes that it’s going to continue to grow.

Due to that, it’s not unnatural to spawn scripted entertainment elements. Traditionally, those have not been big revenue drivers in and of themselves, but they can lift the overall engagement with a franchise delivering a one-two-punch driving growth in the business.

With interactive entertainment becoming more and more important in people’s lives, fans will want to experience it in many different modalities, some of which may be scripted entertainment.

Wilson concluded by mentioning that EA is “looking at any and all aspects that allow them to expand and their brands for their fanbase, but they’re doing it very thoughtfully and as part of their strategy of doing it profitably.”

Earlier in the call, chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen also talked about acquisitions and the upcoming pipeline, mentioning that the publisher has a Need for Speed game coming and three or four more things that they haven’t announced yet, and they’re always looking for ways to grow the portfolio year after year with new titles, new IP, expansion, as well as making acquisitions.

Chrom, Tiki Top Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends Round 6 Results

Chrom, Tiki Top Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends Round 6 Results

Fire Emblem Heroes’ Choose Your Legends Round 6 voting results are here, and Chrom, Tiki, Seliph and female Byleth are this year’s winners. The announcement, part of the February 1, 2022 Feh Channel video, means the four characters will appear in the game with special outfits later in 2022.

Chrom, a main character in Fire Emblem Awakening, topped the men's division after years of increasing fan support. Chrom fans voted for him 42,134 times to get him to the winning spot. The character, who also made it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, is a descendant of Marth.

Joining him at the top is franchise-favorite dragon Tiki. Specifically the Fire Emblem Awakening version of the character, Tiki's win means Awakening heroes top both categories. Receiving 39,705 votes, she'll be the first non-human recipient of the honor. While the younger version of Tiki has made frequent appearances in Heroes, this adult version has been absent since 2017.

Also earning new alternate versions in the Choose Your Legends competition are Seliph and Byleth. A protagonist of the Japan-only Genealogy of the Holy War, Seliph received 26,301 votes to place second in the men's division. Byleth, after falling from second in the back half of last year's voting, held onto her spot in the women's division and earned 20,855 votes.

The full listing of results can be found at the official Choose Your Legends site.

This Wordle Hack Lets You Save The Entire Game To Your PC

2 years 1 month ago

Wordle became a surprise hit during this past January due to many things--it's touching origin story (creator Josh Wardle made the program for his partner), low commitment, easy shareability, and the absence of a price tag. However, that last quality--zero cost for playing--will very likely not last long. The New York Times has purchased Wordle and while it'll remain free "initially," you're going to have to pay-to-play eventually.

Luckily, as discovered by multiple individuals on Twitter, you can save the whole game and have it for free forever. It's very easy to do so: right-click and choose save-as "Webpage, Complete." Now when you click wherever you saved it on your desktop, the game should open. I did the above instructions for mac, but if you're on PC, the procedure should be similar.

Battlefield 2042 Failed To Reach Expectations But EA Still Had Its Best Q3 In Company History

2 years 1 month ago

Electronic Arts on Tuesday released its latest earnings report, and one of the key takeaways was that Battlefield 2042 failed to reach the company's internal expectations. The company did not disclose a specific sales number for the game, but CFO Blake Jorgensen said it was fewer units than EA expected.

The executive also reminded everyone that the Battlefield franchise makes up less than 10% of EA's overall revenue, so the game coming in below expectations didn't hurt EA's bottom line all that much. What's more, EA's Q3 was its biggest in the company's nearly 40-year history, thanks to its diversified lineup of games.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said Battlefield 2042 struggled in part due to it being developed during COVID, while he mentioned that some of the design choices in the game did not resonate with players. Still, EA remains committed to growing and evolving and improving Battlefield 2042 over time. Wilson said DICE is known for being able to turn around a game that had a difficult launch.

He didn't name the game outright, but DICE's Star Wars Battlefront II struggled out of the gate but became a major success story for the company overall, with many millions of copies sold.

Jorgensen pointed out that EA believes Battlefield 2042 will have a long sales tail, so even if the game didn't launch in the strongest position, its fortunes may improve over time.

Just today, DICE outlined its plans for the future of Battlefield 2042's live-service elements. DICE is currently focused on improving the core experience, so it is delaying the launch of Season 1.

Team17 Ditches Worms NFTs Following Backlash

2 years 1 month ago

Less than 24 hours after announcing a line of Worms-themed NFTs, game publisher Team17 is backing away from the project. The move comes in response to swift backlash over the announcement, including multiple developers who previously published games with Team17 issuing anti-NFT statements.

"We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games' communities, and the concerns they've expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space," Team17 announced in an official statement.

The original plan was for Team17 to partner with a third party called the Reality Gaming Group for the NFTs, which would not be introduced into Worms games but sold as "generative NFT art projects." Team17 said it would use a "side chain" of the Ethereum blockchain for the project, which would not use as much energy and be more environmentally friendly.

With A Mystery Halo Infinite Mode Reportedly Coming, Let's Look At What It Could Be

2 years 1 month ago

Certain Affinity, the Texas-based developer which has worked as a support studio on previous Halo and Call of Duty games, is rumored to be working on a new multiplayer mode for Halo Infinite. The rumor emerged as an off-handed tidbit in a Windows Central article primarily concerned with the reports that Certain Affinity is also developing a Monster Hunter-inspired game for Microsoft, which would most likely be drawing many of the studio's resources and personnel. But, for Halo Infinite fans hungry for new content, the prospect of a new mode is tantalizing.

So, if we accept that Certain Affinity is, indeed, working on something for Halo Infinite, the pressing question then becomes: What is it?

Obviously, we can't say for sure yet. But there are a few possibilities worth considering, including modes that have been included in previous Halo games and those that have gained popularity outside the bounds of Microsoft's shooter series.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus - How To Release Multiple Pokemon

2 years 1 month ago

Pokemon Legends: Arceus shifts the Pokemon formula in some major ways, including how you catch Pokemon. Catching the little pocket monsters is much quicker now, since you can catch with a well-timed Poke Ball throw. In fact, since filling out your Pokedex relies on completing a number of tasks, you may find yourself catching Bidoofs by the bucket-full. Here's how to release multiple Pokemon afterwards.

How to mass release Pokemon

Releasing multiple Pokemon isn't difficult, but it can be easy to miss how to do it. If you have a full party of six Pokemon with you at a given time, all the extras you catch will automatically go into Pastures, the Arceus version of Pokemon PC boxes (and still represented by boxes in the in-game icons). At first you'll have 8 Pastures to work with, later expanded to 16 Pastures, each of which can hold 30 Pokemon. That's 240 Pokemon and 480 Pokemon in all, respectively, plus the six in your party. That might sound like a lot, but those Pastures can fill up rather fast.

You'll generally want to release all but one copy of each Pokemon. To do this, go to the Pasture in Jubilife Village or the Pokemon keeper at any base camp to view your Pokemon. Here, simply press X to toggle the multiple selection tool, and press A to select which ones to release. You'll see a small yellow checkmark next to the ones you've set for release, and then simply hit X again to release the batch. A game prompt will open up asking if you're sure, so simply answer yes and enjoy your new spacious Pastures.

Sony Aims to Expand Presence in VR Market; Won’t Speculate on Microsoft’s Acquisition of Activision

2 years 1 month ago

Today, during Sony’s quarterly conference call for investors and analysts, chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki was asked to comment on Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, VR, and more.

Totoki-san mentioned that it’s difficult for Sony to say anything about the deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. He added that the acquisition isn’t completed yet and Sony doesn’t have a clear picture of what kind of business model changes will happen. Due to that, they don’t want to speculate.

Rather, they prefer to pursue and execute their own strategy at the right timing and they want to focus on that.

Totoki-san also talked about VR, mentioning that there is room for evolution on both hardware and software sides, so Sony expects that the market is going to expand.

Sony already announced its first-party game Horizon Call of the Mountain; with PlayStation VR2‘s technology and content like Horizon, the company intends to enhance its presence in the VR market.

Then Totoki-san talked about Sony’s predictions for PS5 sales in the next fiscal year (between April 2022 and March 2021), mentioning that the market demand is high enough that it would allow achieving record-high sales.

Sony is working closely with partner companies supplying companies and they hope they can make such record performance happen, but due to the continued disruption of the supply chain, it’s impossible to say for sure what will happen next year.

Sony Lowers PS5 FY Shipment Prediction; Plans Over 10 Live Service Games by 2026 Thanks to Bungie Acquisition

2 years 1 month ago

Today, during Sony’s quarterly conference call for investors and analysts, chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki talked about the performance of the PlayStation business.

Totoki-san explained that the total gameplay time of PlayStation users in December 2021 declined by 20% year-on-year due to the comparison with the PS5’s launch year. Yet, compared with December 2019, gameplay time increased by approximately 7%, so Sony considers this a solid performance for a quarter in which there were few major new releases.

On top of that, Sony expects engagement to increase further in the current quarter (between January and March) due to the launch of Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7.

We then heard that due to the shortage of semiconductor components, Sony had to lower its forecast of PS5 units sold for the full fiscal year (ending in March) to 11.5 million, compared to the previous forecast which predicted the shipment of over 14.8 million units. Incidentally, Sony already shipped 9.5 million units during this fiscal year, so this sets the target for the period between January and March at a rather conservative 2 million units.

These shortages are expected to continue going forward, but PlayStation will make every possible effort to meet the strong demand for PS5.

Totoki-san also talked about the acquisition of Bungie, confirming the 3.6 billion dollars and clarifying that the conclusion of the deal is subject to conditions including regulatory approval.

Kotobukiya stated that it will start selling Tales of Arise plushes in April 2022. There will be a total of six variations, costing 3,300 JPY (approximately $28.60) each. While the dolls have a release window of April 2022, the samples are available to view on the second floor of the Kotobukiya Akihabara store.

The Tales of Arise plushes depict the six main party members. They all have small smiles on their faces, and the details of their clothing are clear despite the characters appearing as chibis. More complicated elements, such as Alphen and Kisara’s armor, are drawn onto the fabric rather than being made up of separate pieces of felt. Technically speaking, these toys are "nui-doll," which means that it is a mix between a doll and a plush. While they are soft like a normal plushie, you can move their limbs and pose them in various ways.

Tales of Arise released worldwide in September 2021. It follows the story of Alphen, who has lost his memories, and a mysterious Renan woman named Shionne. Other members of the cast include the wildly popular Dohalim (who topped the official Tales of popularity poll from Bandai Namco) and the Dahnan mage Rinwell. For those curious about the game, ufotable released an Introduction Animation in late January 2022.

In replacing the game's textures and models with high-def versions, they've tried hard to replicate both the form and the style, and even tracked down locations and objects Capcom had photographed to work into textures. Dead impressive.

In a first for the company, the game has nothing to do with Shovel Knight. Rather, this time players will have the chance to take on the mantle of Mina, an adorable but lethal mouse. Don't let their cute façade fool you though. Yacht Club has promised players a "bone chilling" experience.

But there are others who are more easily distracted and seem to miss everything important that comes by. People like Bertie. How he manages this, we don't know, but Spelunky, to him, remains unknown.
