Killer Instinct Pro Series Arcade Is Arcade1Up's First Full-Sized Cabinet

2 years 3 months ago

If your home arcade is lacking a classic fighting game cabinet, you're in luck. At-home arcade machine maker Arcade1Up has revealed its first full-sized arcade cabinet as part of its CES 2022 announcements, featuring Rare's classic fighting game, Killer Instinct.

The machines tout a larger 19-inch screen, as opposed to the 17-inch display in Arcade1Up's other offerings. The machine will launch this summer, and you can take a look for yourself below.

In addition to the larger screen, Arcade1Up's Pro Series machines also have upgraded buttons and joysticks, improved speakers and speaker grills, and cosmetic features like chrome trim and light-up coin slots. The company says Killer Instinct is just the first of its planned Pro Series line.

Killer Instinct is a 1-on-1 fighting game series developed by Rare, and originally released in arcades in 1994. The original also game to SNES and Gameboy in the 90s, and it most recently came to Xbox One in 2013 alongside Microsoft Studios' 2013 reboot of the series.

This cabinet comes with the arcade versions of Killer Instinct 1 and 2, as well as three versions of Battletoads: arcade, 8-bit, and 16-bit. Plus, the cabinet supports online multiplayer with built-in Wifi.

Every New Graphics Card Announced at CES 2022

2 years 3 months ago

CES is the largest consumer tech trade show. With many companies across the industry attending to announce new products or concepts, new GPUs are among one of the most anticipated things people hope to see during the event.

With AMD and Nvidia both announcing the next iterations in its Radeon RX 6000 and GeForce RTX 30 series, respectively, and Intel soon to enter the GPU battle, here's a roundup of every graphics card announced at CES 2022.

AMD

The main attraction from AMD in terms of GPUs is its new entry-level GPU, the Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card, which will release on January 19. AMD prices the GPU at $199, but with an ongoing chip shortage and a previous track record of third-party GPU makers such as MSI increasing the street price, these GPUs may be hard to find and more expensive than what its debut price is slated.

The Radeon RX 6500 XT, like others in the RX 6000 series, features RDNA 2 graphical architecture, and the lower-end GPU model aims to run the latest titles at 1080p on the highest settings.

Something Changed On Fortnite's Map Today

2 years 3 months ago

Fortnite's shop updates every day at 4 p.m. CT with new skins, emotes, and gliders to acquire, but the game map often changes without warning. That happened again today in a small way. If you explore slightly to the northeast of Logjam Lumberyard, you'll find a new circular patch of dirt just beyond a hill. Investigating the scene reveals a large driller protected by IO guards at a landmark called Mole Team: Omega. That's right, the Imagined Order (better known as IO) is back and it appears they drilled through the island.

Odds are we'll see more IO troops on the island in the days and weeks ahead, likely culminating in a new story development. There's a chance it could tie into The Foundation unlockables countdown, which currently sits at 30 days.

If you want to check out the drilling site, make sure you bring a weapon, as IO will open fire the second they see you. Look for a tent and you'll find a large weapon cache. A launcher awaits on the far side of the dirt pile, so you should be able to make a quick getaway after getting the rare loot.

It's Time For Sports Video Games To Abandon The Annual-Release Model

2 years 3 months ago

Madden NFL 22

I've been covering sports games for more than a decade now, and I've been playing them for nearly three times that long. Whenever I talk to anyone about the latest middling entry in Madden NFL or NBA 2K, the first question I always receive is, "Should I buy this one if I already own last year's?" I used to have to think more about whether I'd recommend a sports gamer pick up the latest iteration, but over the last several years, the games have felt just that way: iterative. Now, my answer is always, "How important is [this year's tentpole feature] to you? How important is having the latest rosters?" If even one of those is wishy-washy, my answer is either "Wait for a sale" or "Just play last year's game." This song and dance has only become more noticeable as the years have continued.

2 years 3 months ago

Having been around for what has been like an eternity, EVE Online will finally get its first crossover event since the game’s launch later this month, and it will see BBC’s Doctor Who visiting the MMO. The event, known as ‘EVE Online x Doctor Who’ officially, will see the two universes collide as Capsuleers go head to head with the Daleks.

Starting from January 13 until February 1, players will be able to hunt down artifacts from Doctor Who’s Great Time War in an area of space themed after the Gallifrey. This will culminate in a showdown with the Daleks, with unique rewards up for grabs.

The Doctor Who crossover event in EVE Online will also have a separate login campaign going on at the same time, with even more themed items to be obtained even if you are not actively participating in the conflict with the Daleks.

“2022 will be off to an (inter)stellar start with EVE Online x Doctor Who,” EVE Online creative director Bergur Finnbogason shared in a statement. “We are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in EVE Online. Collaborating with BBC Studios gives us the opportunity to pay homage to an iconic series that has inspired us at CCP.”

Ghost of Tsushima Has Sold Over 8 Million Copies

2 years 3 months ago

Today, during Sony’s traditional press conference from CES 2022 in Las Vegas, Sony Pictures chief executive officer Tom Rothman provided an update for the sales of Ghost of Tsushima.

Rothman defined the game by Sucker Punch “hugely successful” and revealed that it has sold over 8 million copies.

The previous update was at 6.5 million units as of March 2021, while we also heard that it’s the fastest-selling first-party original PS4 game of all time.

This is certainly not a small achievement for a brand new IP.

The original Ghost of Tsushima was released for PS4 in July 2020, with a Director’s Cut for both PS4 and PS5 that followed in August 2021.

If you’d like to know why it’s so successful, you can read our review of the original game and that of the new content added with the Director’s Cut.

The game has also received widespread appreciation in Japan, so much that its developers have been named official ambassadors of the island of Tsushima.

Invisible Skin Strikes Again In Yet Another Call of Duty: Warzone Bug

2 years 3 months ago

If you have been a keen player of Call of Duty: Warzone, then you know that issues and glitches are part of the package most of the time. Despite the intense competition between players, survival may not always be dependent on your skill, especially not when players can turn invisible and get the drop on you. The latest Call of Duty: Warzone bug comes in the form of the new Awoken operator skin for Francis, which turns players invisible in certain situations.

Just like other instances of disappearing players, the Awoken skin bug makes a player automatically disappear at a distance of about 35 meters as seen in various videos online. However, the glowing mask is still visible, which is small comfort considering the reduced target size for other players.

The problem has apparently been around since the Pacific update in December, but seeing that the Awoken skin is unlocked at the maximum level of the battle pass for Season 1, it is only in recent weeks that more players have gotten access.

Thankfully, developers Raven Software are aware of this bug in Call of Duty: Warzone, and are likely to deploy a fix in an upcoming patch. For now, players just have to hope that they do not meet any others with the Awoken skin, otherwise, the odds are surely stacked against them.

Sony Names PlayStation VR2, Announces Horizon Call Of The Mountain At CES 2022

2 years 3 months ago

At its CES 2022 conference this evening, Sony discussed its upcoming VR headset and announced a new Horizon game for the device.

PlayStation President Jim Ryan took the stage to provide details on the company's next-generation virtual-reality device. Following its tried and true naming scheme for gaming devices, the PSVR successor is officially called PlayStation VR2. Its controllers are no longer Move wands, but rather PlayStation VR2 Sense Controllers. Ryan spoke about the headset proving a greater sense of presence and increasing the visual fidelity from the previous model.

Technical specifications of PSVR2 have been posted on the PlayStation Blog which reveals all kinds of cool tidbit about the headset and controllers. PSVR2 will feature OLED 2000x2040 resolution screens per eye which run at 90hz or 120hz. The headset will also be outfitted with cameras on the outside to track your controllers (and hopefully room placement), and IR sensors inside to track your eye movement. Another feature not to be overlooked is the addition of vibration feedback on the headset itself, which is pretty exciting for a new level of immersion.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Surpasses 4 Million Copies Sold

2 years 3 months ago

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is the second Musou-style game set in the Legend of Zelda universe, released for the Nintendo Switch just last year. We certainly liked it a lot better than the first Hyrule Warriors game, thanks to its larger focus on narrative and the return of the four champions, and it shows in the sales as well.

Koei Tecmo has just announced via Twitter that the game has sold over four million copies in shipments and digital sales.

The games we're looking forward to in 2022

2 years 3 months ago

What's coming out this year? All the games that didn't come out last year! Ha ha, let's laugh off those mince pies. But it's not far from the truth. We wouldn't have the new God of War or Horizon games this year were it not for their delays, and let's hope they're all the better for it. But will they be the biggest releases this year? The Zelda Breath of the Wild sequel would argue otherwise, Elden Ring would argue otherwise, and it's hard to see many games topping either, except maybe Starfield. After all, it's not often we get a new Bethesda Game Studios game that isn't a Skyrim re-release. Yowch!

But blockbusters are one thing, and a good year of gaming far from depends on them. Look a bit closer and you see a new Bayonetta in there, a new Splatoon, a new Plague Tale game - an underrated series if you ask me. There's a new Pokémon game, because there's always a new Pokémon game, there's Tango Softworks' new spooky-looking Ghostwire: Tokyo, and there's some eye-catching martial arts in Sifu. And don't get us started on Thirsty Suitors. There's even a new Advance Wars game. What more do you want? 2022 looks like a bumper year for all of us, so we asked a variety of our writers what they were excited for. And here's what they said.

Looking forward: the snug pleasure of small worlds

2 years 3 months ago

Hello! We're going to start the year off with a handful of pieces looking forward to 2022. Sometimes we'll be looking at trends we've spotted or themes that will probably be continuing to define things in games for a while. Sometimes we'll just be thinking about things we've enjoyed and where they could lead. Have a lovely new year all!

I don't know if you've ever used one of those run tracking apps, but then left it going by accident for a really long time in your pocket and only discovered it days later after it's recorded hours and hours of your aimless wombling around? It can be quietly illuminating. A lot of us, I suspect, live daily lives that unfold in quite a limited space. Covid has only drawn things in closer, of course, but I know that I live a lot of my life these days in my house, and then in an outdoor space bounded by two parks, a local Tesco, and the sea.
