Zool Redimensioned: how a new generation of developers revitalised a 90s platform icon
We've seen a lot of retro remakes and remasters in recent times and even brand-new games built with a vintage aesthetic, but the recent arrival of Zool Redimensioned is intriguing - simply because of the way in which it was made and the ethos behind its development. Yes, one of the objectives behind the game is to return the Amiga platforming icon to gamers' attention - and yes, perhaps this is about testing the waters for some kind of return for the ninja from the Nth Dimension. But just as important as that is the fact that Zool Redimensioned was built by students at the Sumo Digital Academy, creating their own C++ engine as the foundation for the remaster. It's an investment from a major studio in nurturing a new wave of game developers.
You can learn all about it in this special DF Retro interview, where John Linneman and Audi Sorlie talk to Jacob Habgood, director of education partnerships at the Sumo Group about how Zool Redimensioned came to be, while Sumo Digital Academy intern Emma Rogers shares her experiences in helping to create the new version of the game. On top of that, we get some fascinating insights and historical perspectives from none other than Ian Stewart - co-founder of Gremlin Graphics, the 80s/90s publishing powerhouse responsible not just for Zool, but a range of almost legendary micro-computer franchises from Potty Pigeon, Bounder, Monty Mole, through to Switchblade and the officially licensed Lotus racing games - and many more.

How Far Cry's Iconic Villains Were Created
If there’s one thing everyone remembers about Far Cry it's the villains. Characters like Vaas, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed have all easily earned their place in the bad guy hall of fame. Over time, the role of the villain in Far Cry has become increasingly important to the series’ identity, so much so that in the latest installment – Far Cry 6 – the antagonist is played by one of the most recognisable villain actors of all time: Giancarlo Esposito.
The journey to this high point has been the result of wild audition tapes, ambitious writing, dedicated performances, and an E3 demo that miraculously turned a cut character into Far Cry’s iconic bad guy that started it all.
This is the inside story of the evolution of Far Cry’s villains, and how they were all created.
Far Cry’s villains are always on the front of the box. Played by the cream of video game and Hollywood talent, they stand in the spotlight for each game’s promotion. They even inspire cosplay and fan fiction within the series’ community. But this was not always the case. The original Far Cry, developed by Crytek and published by Ubisoft in 2004, did not have a particularly memorable antagonist. That first game saw main character Jack Carver butt heads with genetic scientist Dr. Krieger, a villain really only notable for tarnishing the ambitious shooter with packs of his annoying Trigen mutants.
Far Cry’s journey towards more nuanced villains began when Ubisoft parted ways with Crytek and took over development duties of the series. In 2008 it released a sequel that would redefine what Far Cry was. Set in an open world based on Africa, it cast players as a mercenary working between the two sides of a bloody civil war. Providing weapons for both sides is Far Cry’s first prototype for its now-signature brand of villain; an arms dealer called The Jackal.
Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier Gets Release Window, New Features Announced - Tokyo Game Show 2021
Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, the upcoming battle royale game for mobile devices from Square Enix, will be released in November, producer Tetsuya Nomura revealed during a livestream special during the Tokyo Game Show on Sunday. Pre-registration will start later this month.
The title was first announced in February, and the team has been using the feedback from a closed beta held during the summer to make adjustments. Producer Shoichi Ichikawa mentioned that controller compatibility was by far the most requested feature after the beta and it has now been added to the game.
“Lots of people want to be able to play on PC or console,” Ichikawa said. “We’re not at that point yet, but we hope this will bring players closer to that experience.” As of now, there are no plans to port the game to other platforms.
Other improvements include a revamped tutorial, which will feature both a mode to help players new to battle royale games learn the basics and a mode to help players get the hang of the gameplay. A new training map has also been added to allow for practice in combat settings.
Ichikawa said 75 percent of respondents from the beta said the game met or exceeded their expectations. The game’s controls and balance have been updated in response to feedback — with a number of respondents singling out the warrior class as needing polish.
Guilty Gear Strive Confirmed for Next ARCREVO Tournament Alongside Soundtrack Release - Tokyo Game Show 2021
Fighting game tournament ARCREVO is coming back and will be headlined by Guilty Gear Strive, the latest title in the long-running Guilty Gear series.
Riku Ozawa from Arc System Works revealed the news about the fighting game tournament during the company’s special program during Tokyo Game Show 2021 on Sunday.
The event will be held in three general regions — North America; Japan and Korea; and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) — though no specific cities were announced.
Qualifying in North America begins December 11 and the finals will be held on March 19, 2022. The event will be held online in February of next year in the Japan and Korea region, while qualifying for the EMEA region begins this month, with the finals taking place in February 2022.
Last year’s event was canceled and switched to an online event, ARCREVO ONLINE 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The preliminary rounds for ARCREVO 2021 will be held online. The finals in each region will take place either online or offline, depending on the COVID-19 situation in each location.
In other news, the Guilty Gear Strive soundtrack was released on Friday and is also available on streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify.

Guilty Gear Strive was released earlier this year and will have more DLC content added in the coming weeks and months.
Dota 2's The International Won't Have In-Person Attendance Due To COVID
Valve has announced that DOTA 2's massive professional gaming tournament The International will no longer allow fans to attend due to COVID. The event is still going forward, though, and it is scheduled to begin on October 7 in Romania, Bucharest.
"We have been carefully evaluating the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania, as well as the resulting introduction of new local restrictions in Bucharest," Valve said in a statement. "To ensure the safety of all players, talent, and production staff participating in the event, we have decided to refund all ticket sales for The International 2021."
"We wanted nothing more than to welcome fans live to the event, but we can no longer do so in a way that allows us to prioritize the health and well-being of both audience members and participants," the statement goes on to say.
Everyone who bought a ticket will receive a fund automatically.
This announcement comes just days after Romanian officials announced new COVID 19 restrictions to help slow the spread of the virus, which infected a record 12,032 people in a single day on Thursday. Some of the new restrictions include mandatory masking in some places. Perhaps more relevant to The International, the government also said restaurants, gyms, theaters, cinemas, and other indoor places could operate at 50% capacity and only for people who were vaccinated or previously infected.
While fans will no longer be permitted at The International, the show is still going ahead on schedule starting October 7. "We look forward to welcoming the best Dota teams in the world to the stage and sharing the experience online with millions of fans around the world," Valve said.
Valve Refunds All DOTA 2 Tourney Tickets Only 12 Days After Selling Them, Event No Longer To Have Live Audience
Valve has canceled all plans to have a live audience at its large-scale DOTA 2 tournament, the International, as the number of covid cases in the host city of Bucharest, Romania continues to increase. The company also announced all tickets will be refunded immediately.

The Life Is Strange: True Colors - Wavelengths DLC Is A Worthy Encore
I can’t help but be drawn to Steph Gingrich. Like many fans, I loved her when she first appeared in Life is Strange: Before the Storm as a passionate dungeon master and gifted artist. Chloe Price might have said it best in her journal when she wrote that she couldn’t tell if Steph was the coolest or nerdiest person in Blackwell. That’s part of Steph’s charm and appeal; she completely indulges in her interests without caring what other people think.
When Deck Nine brought Steph back for True Colors, she reached a new level of awesome, still completely throwing herself into roleplaying, but also pursuing her passion for music by working in the record shop and DJing for Haven Springs’ local radio station. The new Wavelengths DLC serves as a True Colors prequel to bridge the gap between Steph moving to Haven Springs after the events of the original Life is Strange and Alex Chen’s arrival in the small Colorado town. Deck Nine once again excels with witty and relatable writing, while finding intriguing ways to involve the players in Steph’s story that do justice to her personality and interests.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption May Have Been Open World If The Wii Was More Powerful
Bryan Walker, who was Retro Studios' director of development and producer until 2012, revealed that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption could have been an open world game that featured a heavier gameplay focus on Samus' ship if, among other reasons, the Wii was a bit more powerful.
As reported by VGC, Walker detailed these development stories on Kiwi Talkz and shared that Metroid Prime's series director Mark Pacini had much more ambitious plans for this third entry than what ended up being in the shipped game. Unfortunately, some of the ideas were a bit too big for the time.
“Mark came forward with an interesting twist in the vision and some of the formulas for Metroid Prime 3, compared to Metroid Prime 2,” Walker said. “We wanted to a great degree leverage the ship as a playable asset, and we had that to some degree in Prime 3 but Mark was thinking much more ambitiously.
“There was also an open world that was much less linear that he was proposing and the team was excited about. We weren’t able to prototype a lot of those because they were really big. We did have some ship prototypes, but the open-world one was much bigger.
“In fact, Mark printed out as one of his visual aids this origami Samus ship. He had taken the mesh of the Samus ship and used a program that basically unfolded it into what he could then turn into a paper model. So we had this cardboard Samus ship that he had coloured in and it looked great! I think we could sell it today.”

Inscryption plays a disturbing game of cards, and I'm all for it
What is that thing sitting at the table opposite me? All I can see are its orange eyes swirling in the darkness like the snake from The Jungle Book. And I tell you what it makes me feel: menaced. I know this thing doesn't like me and I feel like it wants to hurt me, but I can do nothing about it. I have to play its games, and it feels like it's my fate at stake.
I catch a glimpse of the thing every so often. I see a large, knobbly hand, green and weathered, and I hear its cheesegrater voice, scraping out words. Sometimes I see a face, or the outline of a face, but it's gone as soon as I realise it, engulfed again by shadow or obscured by a mask. And if it is a mask, it becomes a caricature for me, playing the role of a yee-haw gold prospector for a special boss encounter.
