2 years 6 months ago

October's here, so it's time to start putting on a few extra layers. Of clothes, sure, but maybe some extra layers of spooks too. Layers Of Fear developers Bloober Team have just released a new trailer teasing a return to their series about creatives types in frightening locales. The next of the series, from the looks of it, might be headed back to the drawing board—or the canvas perhaps—with another story about a painter.

Avatars Aang And Korra Announced For Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

2 years 6 months ago

Everybody’s favorite pair of Avatars have finally been confirmed for the roster of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, just days before release. Both Aang and Korra will be bending all kinds of elements against the likes of Ren and Stimpy, Danny Phantom, and Patrick Star.

While Aang can utilize bending techniques for all four basic elements in the show, his moveset in Nick Brawl focuses on what he knows best: air bending. Aang is suited to aerial combat using these bending techniques and excels at mid-air combos and incredible mobility. Some highlights of his light and strong moves include his Strong Up attack “Rising Wind Kick,” which propels Aang into the sky diagonally, and his light neutral “Staff Spin” can hit surrounding enemies on either side of him. Aang’s Air Strong attacks make him float a little, so they’re good to use while trying to get back to a platform safely.

The Developers Behind Sonic Mania Are Working On An Original 3D Platformer

2 years 6 months ago

Sonic Mania

Evening Star, a team made up of developers responsible for Sonic Mania, has announced it’s working on an original 3D platformer. It’ll be the debut title for the studio, which formed in 2018 and is led by creative director and Sonic Mania’s marquee designer, Christian Whitehead.

There are only a few small clues as to what the game entails. One of them is a silhouette on the blog post announcing the game, which hints at a shorter character with a long tail with either a bow or perhaps a heavy object at the end of it. Or maybe it's just a yo-yo, as some users have theorized. The game is being made using the studio’s proprietary Star Engine, which the team says specializes in rendering non-realistic, stylized 3D games. Whatever this platformer is, it appears to be very early in development; the team has job postings for a 3D Artist, Engine Programmer, Gameplay Programmer, Level Designer. Evening Star also states it’s looking for a publisher.

Whitehead and his crew released Sonic Mania back in 2017, and it was heralded as the best Sonic game in years (check out our review). The idea of any follow-up from the people responsible would be exciting given that game’s quality, but a 3D platformer sounds especially fitting. It will be fun to watch this game slowly take shape in the coming months and years.

2 years 6 months ago

Dungeon Encounters: Square Enix’s Newest RPG is a Celebration of Old-School Active Time Battles

2 years 6 months ago

Dungeon Encounters is directed by Hiroyuki Ito, involved in the creation of titles including Final Fantasy IV, V, XII, and Tactics. I started sweating a little bit as I began playing because not only is he well known for his work designing battle systems, but I was told that it was first and foremost about its systems, so naturally, I prepared myself to have to take a lot on board. Some of you may also be interested to know that Cattle Call, known for the Metal Max series and The Legend of Legacy, handled its development.

Not a game with lush visuals and effects or a deep, engrossing story, but a turn-based, numbers-focused, bare-bones RPG of sorts. IGN Japan had the opportunity to try it out before release, so here are our initial impressions.

This dungeon crawler RPG involves forming a party of up to four characters and delving into the depths of a board-game-style square grid map. Though the dungeon is divided into squares, you're able to focus on exploring and fighting your way across maps without having to worry about systems like stamina or hunger. As you progress down floors, the maps get bigger and the enemies get tougher.

Stepping on one of the numbered squares found along a map triggers either a battle or an event. Think of these numbers as replacements for enemy symbols or treasure chests, with black numbers representing battles and white numbers leading to events. Almost like a sinister version of snakes and ladders.

Accessible Games Database Helps Locate Accessible Games To Play

2 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Accessibility in games has been a rising topic over the past few years, and rightly so. The more people can play games, the better. Companies are adding in all kinds of options and modes to make games more accessible in various ways, but finding out which games have the options someone may be looking for isn’t always easy. DAGERSystem is looking to change that with a database that makes finding accessible games an easy task.

DAGERSystem’s Accessible Games Database has all kinds of searchable options to help locate specific features you want in a game. The database lets you filter games that cater to various auditory, color, visual, and fine motor features and gives a list of recommendations based on your needs. Each of these categories has targeted sub-categories of accessibility options to find which titles support the particular need of a given player. Even when looking at one game’s suite of options, click on any of them to populate a filtered list of all matches on the database with that same or similar accessibility.

Capcom want PC to be their main platform and make up 50% of sales

2 years 6 months ago

There's no shortage of developers reafirming a love for PC as a platform lately. Sega want to do more PC ports. Atari have restructured and shifted focus to consoles and PC. Capcom too, are now saying that they want PC to be their main platform with an equal share of their game sales within the next two years. Hey, maybe the next Monster Hunter game could get a simultaneous launch. That'd be a dream.

Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida Gives Small Update on State of Development

2 years 6 months ago

During a livestream from Tokyo Game Show, Naoki Yoshida and Hironobu Sakaguchi talked about Final Fantasy XVI offering a small update on development.

You may know Naoki Yoshida as director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV and producer of XVI. Hironobu Sakaguchi is currently the head of Mistwalker (which recently released Fantasian) is widely recognized as the father of the Final Fantasy series.

Sakaguchi-san mentioned that he feels Final Fantasy XVI is going to be a full-fledged fantasy, and Yoshida-san confirmed that the main scenario is complete.

Side quests are in development and almost complete. Character models are also almost finished and the team just needs to brush up on the quality a bit.

Yoshida-san continued by mentioning that the initial focus was to produce the main scenario with a small team. While the total production period is quite long, the size of the team didn’t increase much until plans were finalized. There was a lot of trial and error. Yoshida-san believes that it’s important to start with a small team and then to gradually expand.

Sakaguchi-san (perhaps jokingly) offered to write a quest for the game, and Yoshida-san mentioned that he could write for Final Fantasy XIV, but the father of Final Fantasy replied that he wouldn’t want to compete with Yasumi Matsuno (who gave him 1 million gil to get started in XIV) and Yoko Taro.

Astria Ascending Review

2 years 6 months ago

There is always something exciting about playing a brand new JRPG that isn’t from one of the popular franchises we already know and love, mostly to see how it differentiates itself from the pack. But while Astria Ascending’s turn-based combat is excellent, its mediocre story and weak quest design drag it down. It has plenty of amusing things going for it, but those shortcomings keep it from becoming the breakout JRPG it had the potential to be.

Astria Ascending puts a side-scrolling twist on a more traditional, turn-based RPG shell. You’ll explore its world of Orchanon as a 2D platformer, entering separate rooms, collecting treasures, and encountering enemies as you travel across the screen. But while its presentation is novel, its story setup is something we’ve seen several times before: you play as Ulan, the leader of the 333rd company of Demi-Gods trying to stop an uncompelling chaotic threat that wants to remove harmony from the world.

Each of your party members has their own bigger motivation too, but in general, the story is just so cliche. Astria Ascending’s world has a unique look and its races are freshly designed, but their differences are only skin deep. Because of this, the main cast suffers from bland dialogue and a lack of personality, making them uninteresting to spend dozens of hours with.

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Shinsei Delayed to Early 2022; New Trailer Released

2 years 6 months ago

Today, during a livestream from Tokyo Game Show, Koei Tecmo announced that its strategy game Nobunaga’s Ambition: Shinsei won’t hit the shelves this year.

When it was announced back in March, the game was given a 2021 release window, but today we learn that it will actually launch (at least in Japan) in early 2022.

The delay was announced with a new trailer showcasing gameplay and the usual massive amount of daimyo.

You can watch it below.

If you’re unfamiliar with the series, it debuted with the first Nobunaga’s Ambition all the way back in 1983.

The latest game of the series is Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi, released in 2017.

It’ll be interesting to see how Kou Shibusawa and his team are planning to bring about the “rebirth” of the series (that’s what “Shinsei” means).

Iron Banter: This Week In Destiny 2 - Crow Falls Out Of The Nest, Triangulating Trials

2 years 6 months ago

Just about every week brings something new to Destiny 2, whether it's story beats, new activities, or interesting new combinations of elements that let players devastate each other in the Crucible. Iron Banter is our weekly look at what's going on in the world of Destiny and a rundown of what's drawing our attention across the solar system.

A plot point Destiny 2 has been building toward for more than a year has finally happened--and there are some pretty big implications about what could happen next in the Season of the Lost and The Witch Queen. Here there be spoilers, so if you haven't finished this week's seasonal story point, go run some Astral Alignments and visit the Shattered Realm, and then get back to us.

Meanwhile, we had another fun and fascinating week with the Trials of Osiris, and it's been interesting to watch Bungie address community feedback and learn as it goes. We're getting a break from Trials this weekend in favor of the return of the Iron Banner, and Grandmaster Nightfall Strikes make their return next week.

Endgame activities and Crucible competitions are fun and all, but y'all, I'm worried about Crow, my big sensitive softy Hunter pal.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Deadlands Concludes Its Oblivion Storyline This November

2 years 6 months ago

The Elder Scrolls Online players will at long last be able foil Dagon's evil plans, all while exploring mysterious new regions never-before-seen in the Elder Scrolls universe with the arrival of the game's Deadlands DLC.

Deadlands marks the end of the year-long Gates of Oblivion storyline, which with Deadlands' release will encompass four DLC packs. Deadlands will be hitting PC, Mac, and Stadia on November 1. Console players will be able to explore the new DLC on November 16.

Bethesda says players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will recognize some areas in Deadlands, such as The Burn, a region with molten rivers and fire-infused monsters. But there will be completely new areas to explore as well, like The Sever, a region that houses deadly storms and fierce winds. Deadlands will also introduce a massive new capital city, Fargrave. Located in a mystical desert, the city is roofed by a massive skeleton.

Deadlands can be purchased through the in-game Crown Store and is also included at no extra cost for ESO Plus subscribers. It's the largest update to the game since the Blackwood update in June, which added a new region and player companions. The latest Gates of Oblivion update, Waking Flame, introduced new dungeons, item sets, and collectibles.

New World Fast Travel And Mobility Guide: How To Navigate Aeternum More Quickly

2 years 6 months ago

As is to be expected from an MMO, players have a lot of ground to cover in Amazon's New World. There are no mounts or flight paths in Aeternum, however, meaning players will have to travel on foot almost anywhere they want to go. That can be more than a little time-consuming, but there are, thankfully, a few ways players can speed up the travel process. Below is some detailed information on how fast travel works in New World, as well as other ways you can improve your speed and mobility as you move around Aeternum.

Fast Travel

In New World, you can fast travel from settlement to settlement, for a cost. Spirit Shrines, which are scattered throughout the wilderness of Aeternum, can also be fast traveled to. But there are a few caveats. Here's how fast travel works in New World:

  • You must have previously visited the settlement or Spirit Shrine you are fast traveling to.
  • You have to be at either a Spirit Shrine or settlement to fast travel to another location.
  • Fast traveling uses a special resource called Azoth, which can also be used for crafting. This resource isn't super plentiful in the early stages of the game. The Azoth cost of fast traveling varies depending on your character's inventory weight, the distance being traveled, and whether your faction controls the settlement being fast traveled to.

Fast traveling with abandon will quickly deplete your Azoth supplies, so it's best to only fast travel when you absolutely need to (or just can't stand the thought of walking for another 20 minutes).

New World Reportedly Causing GPU Issues For Some Players Again

2 years 6 months ago

There has been a fresh round of reports of Amazon's MMO New World causing graphics cards to either crash or fail completely. A similar issue occurred during the beta for New World during which RTX 3090s were bricking, possibly due to the settings menu having an uncapped framerate. The issue seemed limited to EVGA cards, which were promptly replaced.

As reported by PC Gamer, it seems as though the EVGA RTX 3090 FTW Ultra card and the Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti are reportedly having issues, in some cases. These reports, alongside some graphics cards crashing, have popped up on Reddit and the New World forums. PowerGPU also put out a tweet stating that it has begun receiving reports about failing GPUs.

When asked for comment, an Amazon representative said it didn't have additional information on the issue,

Xbox Alpha Update Lets You Track How Much Time You've Spent On Your Favorite Game From The Guide

2 years 6 months ago

A new update is out now for Xbox alpha testers that adds one commonly requested feature. The ability to track detailed stats like precisely how many hours you've spent playing Destiny or any other game is now available directly from the Guide.

With the update applied, users will find that the Game Activity tab from the Guide now displays not only stats about Achievements but also new information like your specific play time "and more" depending on the particular game. The specific amount of time spent playing a game was already already from deeper within the Xbox menus, but it looks like this is the first time it's directly accessible up from from the Guide.

New Xbox features are normally released first to Xbox Insider testers and then widely to everyone pending testing, so if all goes well, it shouldn't be long before this feature debuts for everyone.

The latest alpha tester update also added Xbox Cloud Gaming support for some users on console. Microsoft deployed this feature to a random group of users recently, letting members stream supported titles instead of downloading them.

In other Xbox news, the new Halo Infinite Big Team Battle beta test is going on now through Sunday, letting everyone on Xbox (and many people on PC) check out the new 12v12 mode for the first time. For more, check out GameSpot's rundown of the Halo Infinite beta's schedule and how to download it.
