Sonic Colors: Ultimate feels best when it's focused on going fast

2 years 8 months ago

After a half hour hands-on preview with Sonic Colors: Ultimate, I'm reminded of just how fast the world's most famous hedgehog really is. If I'm honest, 30 minutes was nowhere near enough time to get a firm grasp on this garden dweller.

Colors: Ultimate is a remaster of a 2010 platformer originally for the Wii, remastered in time for Sonic's 30th birthday. It was well recieved by fans at the time, so I suppose HD-ifying it now makes sense. But if I pick through the blue dust left in Sonic Colors Ultimate's wake, I'm left with the feeling that I just prefer the going-fast hedgehog when he's focused on going fast.

The Gamerscore System Is Busted and Microsoft Needs to Fix It

2 years 8 months ago

In 2005, Microsoft’s Gamerscore system launched alongside the release of the Xbox 360, birthing a new community of gamers that would continue to thrive even 16 years down the line. These achievement enthusiasts would dedicate their gaming hours to driving up their Gamerscores by trying to unlock as many achievements as possible, across as many games as possible. Retail releases would have 1,000G worth of achievements to unlock, while Xbox Live Arcade titles would have 200G. In these 16 years, a lot has changed, some for the better, but mostly for the worst, and if Microsoft doesn’t step in to do some damage control, the achievement hunting hobby is doomed to die out.

In the formative years of Gamerscore, the rules for writing achievement lists were a lot more strict. A retail release could have 1,000 Gamerscore, and an arcade title could have 200G, and DLC/title update achievements could be added, but could not be of any value. Officially the first Xbox 360 title to be released, Kameo: Elements of Power has 24 0G achievements that were released with DLC packs, and the second Xbox 360 title, Quake 4, released with a bonus disk featuring Quake II, that had nine achievements worth 0G. Even though it was a different title entirely, it came with Quake 4 and thus couldn’t bring their total over 1,000G. That’s how strict the rules were.

Only Diehard Fans Can Name These Iconic Horror Movies

2 years 8 months ago

Even though the scariest thing of all is growing up and having to deal with life’s numerous challenges, the next best thing is watching a good ol’ horror flick from the comfort and safety of your own living room. Yes, watching scary movies rules, and if you’re not a fan of those things that go bump in the night, then you’d best skedaddle — you’re in the wrong place!

Still here? Excellent. *rubs hands*

Welcome one and all to Twinfinite’s latest film quiz. Much like our recent creepy quizzes about horror movie icons and video game villains, we’ve decided to set our sights on the most iconic horror movies of all time. Instead of naming specific characters, though, we’re going to focus on naming the actual films instead.

That’s right, it’s time to have some fun trying to identify these horror movies with just a single image to go on. However, because we’re also really nice folks, we may give you a clue as to the year the film was released, and maybe even a hint as to what the sub-genre of said movie is.

If you think it’s going to be too easy, well, hold onto your zombified horses! Indeed, we may start off easy-breezy, but we’ll make sure to ramp things up and give all you hardcore gore-hounds an appropriate challenge by the time we wrap things up.

So, without further ado, grab your crucifixes and holy water, and come join us as we venture back into the shadowy recesses of one of the best genres in the world. Good luck!

Former Blizzard Dev And Undead Labs Founder Calls For Gaming Industry To Unionize Following Activision Lawsuit

2 years 8 months ago

Following the most recent lawsuit against Activision Blizzard that cites sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and reported abuse, Jeff Strain says "enough is enough" and calls for the gaming industry to unionize. Strain used to work for Blizzard before co-founding both ArenaNet (Guild Wars) and Undead Labs (State of Decay). Now, he's looking to the future of gaming and what that future looks like for those that work within this industry.

Strain recently reflected on the ongoing Activision Blizzard lawsuit and said while he was "disgusted and repulsed," he wasn't surprised in the least. Because of that, however, he's lending his voice to the many already calling for unionization. Not just for one company, either, but an industry-wide sweep.

The Wayward Realms Is A New Open-World RPG From Lead Elder Scrolls Devs

2 years 8 months ago

You can't really go wrong with an open-world fantasy RPG experience, and developers Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay know a thing or two about crafting an enjoyable exploratory experience. The pair of devs have worked on games like Elder Scrolls Daggerfall and Arena in the past, and now they are working on a new adventure with Once Lost Games for more consequences, more player choice, and a new role-player experience that is designed to be realistic and enthralling.

Dubbed a new class of role-playing called The Grand RPG, The Wayward Realms aims to offer an experience like none other with designs meant to be as immersive as possible. With an ever-evolving story that is coerced by a virtual Game Master, players will need to survive in a massive open world that is "way bigger than most other games you can think of." 2 years 8 months ago

If you fancy trudging around in a gloomy series of caves and absorbing the lifeforce and abilities of your enemies, you might want to take a look at Grime. It's an action-RPG metroidvania in which you play as a really buff rock/man/thing with a black hole for a head. The world is filled with other strange rock-creatures and you can absorb them by timing attacks just right. It's pretty fun! And kinda weird.

The current best Sony exclusive is a playable PlayStation advert and I love it

2 years 8 months ago

This weekend, my musing about saving up for a Steam Deck instead of a new console proved to be the lies of a charlatan hack, as a new PS5 arrived. Not like, as a surprise. I bought it. And I experienced some buyer's remorse, not just because it wasn't a Steam Deck, but because it is so big in person. The PS5, and I cannot overstate this, is too large. It's like having an electronic child that cannot love me back. I don't have to worry about it being stolen because any hopeful thief wouldn't make it half way down the road before they got knackered out carrying it. My front room looks like a robot T-Rex from Horizon Zero Dawn has taken a giga-dump under my TV.

Fortunately, my remorse was washed away in an instant by what is the best PlayStation exclusive I've ever played. Yes: I'm talking about Astro's Playroom, the pre-installed platformer that serves mostly as a tech demo for the console's new DualSense controllers.

DF Direct Weekly talks Flight Simulator, RX 6600 XT and PS5 NVMe support

2 years 8 months ago

DF Direct Weekly once again returns - and you know the score: a triumvirate of Digital Foundry team members sit down to discuss the major news events of the week, to share insights on their current projects and what's going on in the DF Supporter Program, finishing up by taking a look at a bunch of submitted questions from our backers. And this time there's a slight twist, in that news of the PS5 firmware beta that adds NVMe SSD support broke cover just as we were concluding our filming session last Thursday. Want to see the Direct sooner? Well, supporters get to watch it on Saturday every week without fail.

In this week's show, the team share their impressions of Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series consoles, with Alex Battaglia revealing some of his behind-the-scene thoughts on our recent Asobo Studio Flight Simulator interview - and there are some frankly amazing anecdotes and observations in that if you've not watched it yet. In addition to last week's coverage, we've since received PC-equivalent settings from Asobo and we discuss those in the Direct too. John walks us through his reactions to The Ascent, while the team share their thoughts on the recent reveal of the Radeon RX 6600 XT - note that I mention a $349 price-point in there, but it's actually $379... a situation that has not gone down well online.

Nippon Ichi Software Teases Mysterious (and Creepy) New Game

2 years 8 months ago

Today prolific Japanese developer Nippon Ichi Software opened a teaser website for a new game.

The tease is accompanied by two videos showing what appears to be a girl and a murder scene in a warehouse.

You can watch them below.

Nippon Ichi Software has provided no further information at the moment, and we don’t know when the full release will come. The company definitely loves teases like this, and they do it for basically every game they announce.

This one appears to be a horror or thriller game, and when I interviewed the developer’s president Sohei Niikawa a while ago, he did tell me that summer is pretty much the season of horror.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s Second Trailer Teases its Villains Origin Story

2 years 8 months ago

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is looking promising in its second trailer today, which puts the spotlight on the film’s titular villain, played by Woody Harrelson; in particular, the origins of his transformation from deranged psychopath to killer symbiote

As you’ll see, Cletus Kasady, who we were first introduced to at the very end of the first film, is very definitely a dangerous individual long before he gets a taste of Eddie Brock’s blood, but as Carnage he’s a whole different animal. Quite literally.

Check it out below.

For those not up to speed with Venom: Let There Be Carnage, here’s the film’s official synopsis:

“One year after the events of Venom , investigative journalist Eddie Brock struggles to adjust to life as the host of the alien symbiote Venom, which grants him super-human abilities in order to be a lethal vigilante.

Brock attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the host of the symbiote Carnage and escapes prison after a failed execution.”

Fortnite’s Rift Tour Is Another Step Towards Its Metaverse Future

2 years 8 months ago

Last week, Epic Games announced the Fortnite Rift Tour, a new in-game event to help mark the beginning of the end of the current in-game season, featuring Ariana Grande as the headline (and possibly only) act. Much like last year’s Travis Scott experience, the event will feature an iconic pop star, some exclusive in-game items, and a bunch of quests for players to complete before, during, and after the event actually takes place.

If Scott’s Astronomical event from last year is any indication, Ariana Grande’s Rift Tour will feature plenty of trippy in-game effects and visuals to really emphasize just how cool and unique these digital experiences can be. R

Even I was rather impressed by the Astronomical event last year. As someone who doesn’t identify as a ‘fan’ of Scott’s music, Epic Games managed to craft an experience that was enjoyable regardless of whether you like the bone-rattling bass-y beats of the rapper, or the bars that he spits over the top of them, or not. It was psychedelic, unique, and a stark reminder of Epic’s ambitions and vision for the future of its live-service title.

You’ll notice I purposefully avoided referring to Fortnite as a Battle Royale title in that last sentence. Or maybe you didn’t, but I did! That’s because it’s becoming increasingly clear that Epic Games envisions Fortnite’s future as far more than a last-man-standing battle to the death. It’s slowly but surely edging ever closer to becoming a full-fledged Metaverse… even if it is in its very early stages.

Comiket 99 Organizers Aim to Bring Back in-Person Event This Winter

2 years 8 months ago

Today the Comic Market Committee announced on its website that preparations are ongoing with the aim to bring back Tokyo’s popular Comiket as an in-person event this year.

Comiket 99 should be held at the traditional Tokyo Big Sight venue in Odaiba, Tokyo on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31, 2021.

The latest edition of the event was its 97th, held in December 2019 and drawing 750,000 Fans of Games, Anime, Manga, Doujinshi, and Cosplay in a massive celebration of all things Otaku. It was just before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic

The 98th edition in May 2020 was canceled, and since then there has been no Comiket in Tokyo.

This year, after consulting with the authorities and with the hope that the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine will make things safer, the organizers have decided to organize the event with the aim to bring it back to the physical world.

Of course, regulations to prevent infection will still be in place and attendance will be limited, and the organizers admit that the decision was taken based on the expectation of a slowdown of the virus. if the pandemic situation doesn’t actually improve, they may postpone the event again.

However, the decision to hold Comiket 99 was taken considering the situation of the world of doujinshi as a whole. The organizers believe that if they don’t start moving, the “place” called Comiket will never open again.

At the moment, we don’t know whether we’ll be able to be on the show floor like we were in 2019 to bring you a report, but we’ll certainly do our best.

Valorant Esports Saw Comeback Kids Steal Glory in NA & EU During Challengers 2

2 years 8 months ago

TSM fans have been waiting a long time for their Valorant team to find a spell of good form. After a blistering start to kick off the game’s esports scene in 2020, which saw them finish as runners up at First Strike and place well at several smaller competitions, it’s been one disappointment after another.

2021 has, quite simply, been a nightmare, with the team consistently failing to make it out of the qualifying stages of every VCT tournament over the first half of the year. For an esports franchise as big as TSM, funded by huge amounts of money and boasting some of the most popular personalities in the entire North American Valorant scene, their run of form was, quite honestly, disastrous for the organization.

Finally, though, they have something to cheer about. For the first time all year, TSM qualified for a VCT tournament. Not only that, but over the past weekend, they put together a brilliant string of dominant performances that saw them win the entire thing. Along the road to victory, they beat out some of North America’s best teams, including the likes of GenG, T1, and FaZe — teams that have competed at the very highest level of regional VCT tournaments throughout 2021.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, TSM once again looks like one of America’s best, potentially capable of challenging teams like Sentinels, 100T, and Envy for a spot at Masters 3 in Berlin later this year.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage's Latest Trailer Highlights Symbiote Feeding

2 years 8 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Venom's comic book identity changes as quickly as the seasons. He started as a bad guy who ate plenty of brains and battled Spider-Man, transformed into a vigilante who did some good (and some bad), and then went full-on hero to save the universe, an act that led to him gaining god-like powers and aging well beyond his years. The movies featuring this beloved character appear to be keeping things simple. Venom and his his host, Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy), just want to be left alone – and eat a few brains when possible. Other symbiotic characters complicate these efforts and they have to fight to the death. The latest foe to want a piece of Venom is Carnage, who is bonded to Cletus Kasady (brought to life by Woody Harrelson).

Bungie And Ubisoft Team Up To Take Destiny 2 And Rainbow Six Siege Cheat Creators To Court

2 years 8 months ago

Companies teaming up for in-court goals is nothing new, but the latest case is seeing Bungie and Ubisoft joining forces to take those that are selling cheats to court. The aim is not necessarily to go after those using them (though that has been the case in the past), but to go after those making these cheating programs and selling them for profit.

For both Rainbow Six Siege and Destiny 2, PC players especially have been purchasing aimbots, ESP tools to cheat health and radar systems, infinite ammo hacks, and more to gain the advantage in a match versus just actually learning how to be good in the game. For those not interested in having actual skill in a match, these cheats come in handy, but using them can get you permanently banned, while creating them can land you in court.

Bungie and Ubisoft's lawsuit against Ring-1, a cheat seller that offers subscription packages to impact the online experience for others negatively, was filed on July 23 and names several involved in this operation in front of a judge. The lawsuit names Overpowered, Krypto, and Berserker as the leading offenders, with the lawsuit itself looking to seek retribution for a system that "impairs and destroys not only the game experience but also Plaintiff's overall businesses and their reputation among their respective player communities."

Fan-Made Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection Is On The Way With Valve's Consent

2 years 8 months ago

Half-Life is an iconic franchise by Valve that changed the face of gaming for the better when it was first released. Because of that, this series has seen many fan iterations and continuations in the past, but it looks like a Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection is in the works. Before you get too excited, this is a fan-made project and not an official remaster, but Valve is reportedly totally cool with it.

The remastered collection was spotted by PCGN over on SteamDB and shows a collection in the works from modder Filip Victor. While the collection itself says "not Valve-related," it is reported that the company has given consent for the fan project to push forward with development. The report that Valve has given the green light for this project comes by way of Tyler McVicker, a person known for reporting on Valve news.

Dead Space Remake Is Being Directed By Former Assassin's Creed Director

2 years 8 months ago

There have been several rumors previously about former Assassin's Creed director Eric Baptizat and his role in the then-rumored Dead Space Remake. Still, a nice little LinkedIn update has proven those rumors true. Baptizat left his 16 year-tenure at Ubisoft behind to work at EA Motive, and now we know what drew him to the EA side of gaming.

For those that may be unfamiliar, Baptizat was the game director for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but his ties to the stealth series expand beyond that. He has previously taken a lead designer role on other Assassin's Creed titles such as Origins, Black Flag, and Unity. Baptizat is pooling his expertise with other Ubisoft veterans, including Watch Dog Legion's Philippe Ducharme and For Honor's Roman Campos-Oriola. A few BioWare vets are also joining the horror remake's efforts and a few members from the original Dead Space team.
