Star Wars: The Old Republic celebrates 10 years with a new expansion

2 years 9 months ago

While BioWare are keeping their lips sealed on Dragon Age and Mass Effect newness for now, they've announced some surprise newness for their 10-year old MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. They're launching a new expansion named Legacy Of The Sith, which will add new story, combat styles, areas and more. It's coming out towards the end of this year, and the devs say this is the start of a year-long celebration for the game's 10th anniversary (so even more updates will arrive throughout 2022).

Humble Bundle once again capping how much users can donate to charity

2 years 9 months ago

Humble Bundle faced criticism earlier this year when it tried to remove charity sliders from its bundle pages, a decision that would have severely limited the amount players could donate to charity for their purchases. Following significant backlash, Humble Bundle decided to reverse this decision and reinstate the sliders - but it's once again placing limits on how much can be donated to charity.

In a blog post, Humble Bundle announced it will be rolling out a "new iteration" of sliders in mid-July. "While splits on each bundle will vary, on average there will be a minimum amount for Humble Bundle between 15-30 percent," the post said. This means users will no longer be able to donate the entire amount to charity, although the company said there will continue to be some "100 percent to charity bundles".

The company explained that the "PC storefront landscape has changed significantly" since the bundles began in 2010, and it had to "continue to evolve with it to stay on mission.

This Poketoon About a Magikarp Will Bring You to Tears

2 years 9 months ago

Studio Colorido has created the fourth Poketoon short animation released on the Pokemon Kids TV Japan YouTube channel. This one is all about the bond between a child and a Magikarp, and it really tugs at your heartstrings.

It’s called “Wait, Magikarp!” and the entire story is told through art and music. There are no words spoken, but the story very clearly unfolds throughout the six-minute-long animation.

The video starts with a child playing the flute at the lake, which captures the attention of a Magikarp. As a result of this, the pair forms an immediate connection. The child tries to take the Magikarp home with him, but his parents won’t allow him to keep the Pokemon, and it must return to the lake.

After that, the two become separated, but the Magikarp remains determined to meet the child again and hear him play the flute once more, knowing they shared a strong connection that day.

We won’t spoil the ending, but it truly captures the bond between a trainer and their Pokemon in a unique way.

It’s amazing how the story can be told with no words spoken. Also, Magikarp is a totally expressionless Pokemon, which would make you wonder how it can show any emotion in an animated video like this.

You’ll have to watch for yourself to see what we mean when we say it will bring you to tears. Be sure to watch with the volume up to hear the chilling flute music as well as that is an important part of the storytelling here.

DOOM Eternal Is Getting a New Horde Mode in Place of Invasion Mode

2 years 9 months ago

Developer id Software’s executive producer of DOOM Eternal, Marty Stratton, has just revealed that a new single-player horde mode will be added to the game in the near future. The team is redirecting its efforts to the new mode after making the decision not to release the planned ‘Invasion mode’ as a result of complications due to COVID-19 work-from-home measures.

The news comes by way of a Tweet from the developer’s official channel:

As you may have read above, there are also plans to overhaul the Battlemode with a more competitive rank-based structure, as well as new gameplay balancing updates and an all-new level.

Id Software’s continued post-launch support of DOOM Eternal has so far been hugely impressive, with several major title updates adding new features and content to the game. You can read more about the full list of changes and additions to the game in its most recent title update (Update 6) here.

Here Are the Quality of Life Improvements in Skyward Sword HD

2 years 9 months ago

Skyward Sword HD, the remaster of the Legend of Zelda game for the Wii, is releasing on the Switch later this month. Today, we learned some more of the quality of life improvements that we can expect that will make the gameplay smoother than it was in the original 2011 release.

Nintendo released a quality of life trailer showcasing all of these improvements, so you can either scroll down to watch in video form or continue reading as we detail the changes you can expect.

The first quality of life change relates to the help system from Fi, Link’s companion throughout the game. In the original game, Fi would often interrupt the player throughout the game to offer hints on what to do.

This bothered many players who didn’t want such a hand-holding companion, so it looks like instead of Fi automatically offering help, Link’s sword will glow when a hint is available. Players can then call for Fi to ask for a hint. This will allow players to explore and solve puzzles at their own pace and only receive help when it is wanted.

The next change to the game detailed in the trailer is all about the enhanced controls options. We had previously learned that in addition to using Joy-Con motion controls to use Link’s items, traditional button controls will also be an option.

The trailer shows how this will work with a variety of enemies and items; in short, the right analogue stick will control the motion parts of the game, which will allow players to enjoy the game in handheld mode or with a pro controller.

Nintendo shared a few other quality of life improvements to expect in the game, such as enhanced frame rate for smoother gameplay, fast-forward dialogue to make text boxes scroll faster, and skippable cutscenes.

Finally, they shared one more change that many players had been asking for: streamlined item information.

Hot Wheels Unleashed Is a Vibrant Arcade Racer for Genre Newbies (Hands-On Preview)

2 years 9 months ago

I’m not exactly the most hardcore racing fan around, but even I couldn’t resist when I was offered the opportunity to check out a preview build of Hot Wheels Unleashed on Steam. While I’ve never had the fortune of owning my own Hot Wheels cars as a kid, I always found myself drawn to just how cool and blocky they looked. They were the coolest racing toy cars around, and Hot Wheels Unleashed brings that toy-like charm to life in video game form.

The preview build only featured a limited number of tracks and cars to play around with, but it was more than enough to give a good taste of the game. The environments are extremely varied even from this limited selection, ranging from college campuses to skate parks and skyscrapers. The bubblegum colored tracks wrap around them beautifully, creating a very childish-looking yet simultaneously charming-looking environment for the races.

It certainly helps that your race cars are literally Hot Wheels toy cars. They’re absolutely tiny compared to the objects around them, which just adds to the lovely toy-like nature of the game.

As an arcade racer, the various cars in Hot Wheels Unleashed felt good to control. Of course, each car comes with varying braking speeds and handling stats, but the arcadey feel of the game makes it a total blast to play. It almost reminded me of something like Rocket League in a way, especially when you drive off platforms and go bouncing up into the air.

Here's The Sims 4's Cottage Living expansion explained by a llama

2 years 9 months ago

The Sims 4's next expansion is the ridiculously idyllic version of British countryside living. Electronic Arts revealed the Cottage Living expansion last month and they've now called up a local llama to give you the details. Why the llama? Well he's more English than I am, so I trust he knows more about the affairs of the new Henford-on-Bagley neighbourhood than I do. Here's Harold in a new trailer to show off livestock, canning, local fairs and more.

Ultimate Audio Bang #09: our favourite heroes in shooters

2 years 9 months ago

Now that we're over the E3 hump, Imogen and I thought we'd catch a break on this week's episode of the Ultimate Audio Bang. But no, the online shooters simply do not stop reloading. PUBG dropped a new map on its test servers, Warzone fixed its murder door, and Valorant's new agent sounds very overpowered.

And speaking of agents, our theme this week was, well, agents/heroes/operators/characters, or whatever else you'd call them in an online shooter. We both went down the Overwatch route because my word does that game have some good heroes. I think they're called heroes?

It was Imogen's turn to surprise me with some strange names she's played with this week. Amazingly, two of them weren't Sage players in Valorant. Unbelievable.

Monster Hunter Rise might just be my ideal Monster Hunter game

2 years 9 months ago

Monster Hunter Rise isn't due to arrive on PC until early next year, but I've been playing the Switch version over the last week after getting the game for my birthday - and I actually can't stop. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been slicing up its oversized lizards with my beloved Dual Blades like nobody's business, gutting their scales, pelts, fangs and goodness knows what else to make even stronger pairs of dino pants so I can get back out there and take on ever-larger beasties and make ever more fashionable trousers. It's a familiar rhythm to Monster Hunter games of yore, but there's something about Rise that's kept me hooked far longer than my jaunts in previous MonHan games, including PC mega hit Monster Hunter: World. And I think it's partly down to my new dog friends, the Palamutes.

TFI Friday: 3 new indie games you can play on a MacBook

2 years 9 months ago

I think I am slightly out of sync with the original fortnightly schedule for this, owing to E3 destroying about a week of our lives, but now I'm back! Or rather, I'm gone - to my mum's house again. This means that my big rig is alone in Brighton, while I am here with my MacBook Air for company.

As such, everything this week is also playable on Mac OS. And blimey, loads of good games are on Mac these days, aren't they? It's a really great distraction from all the spiders in this house, and the fact that the shower osscilates between being freezing cold and boiling, bum-burning hot. The actual realities of cottagecore would shock you people.

Toys Give First Look At Spider-Man's New Suits In No Way Home

2 years 9 months ago

Spider-Man: No Way Home doesn't open in theaters until December 17, but Marvel is giving us an early look at Spider-Man's new suits and some of the other characters that will be in the movie. The toys, which range from action figures to LEGO, show off what appears to be three different suits for Spider-Man, as well as new looks at MJ, Ned, J. Jonah Jameson, and a hero and villain – I won't name them here, but you can see who they are in the image galleries below.

On that note, this line-up of figures DOES NOT reveal a couple of heroes that fans believe will be in the film, even though an actor who has played one of these characters in the past has said he's not reprising his role.

The new Spider-Man suits are variations of the looks he's had in the last few movies, each appearing to have some kind of special gadget functionality. The big addition to his wardrobe is a proper black getup, which Marvel lists as officially as the Black & Gold Suit. One of the other suits shows off an interesting addition that ties in with another character.

Netflix's The Witcher Season 2 Director On Henry Cavill, "He Could Be A Politician!"

2 years 9 months ago

Actor Henry Cavill comes off as adorkably sweet, but what is it like working with him? According to Netflix's The Witcher season 2 director Stephen Surjik, it's as amazing as you might think. The director recently sat down with Combat Radio to talk about set life and what comes with it, but what he said about Cavill had us going, "awww."

In the interview, which you can see in the video below (courtesy of r/NetflixWitcher), Surjik spoke on how thoughtful Cavill is on set. "If someone is new there, [he] will spot them and say 'who's that?' and go introduce himself and finds out what they are doing." He said he's so immersed in those around, and charming to boot, that he added, "He's amazing, he could be a politician."

Surjik also talked about how Cavill is one of the most reliable actors in the space, "When he shows up on set, he shows up on time. He shows up in character, with his costume, on his mark and he knows all of his lines. He knows the background to what he is doing, he knows what came before and what comes after."

New Legend Of Zelda: Skyward HD Trailer Shows Off Skippable Cutscenes, Autosave, And New QoL Changes

2 years 9 months ago

A new The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD trailer is here and shows off some of the improvements made to the fan-favorite. From the option to get some helpful assistance from Fi to the ability to skip over the cutscenes you may have seen one too many times, here is a brief overview of what The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD trailer had to reveal.

In the below video, Nintendo shows off the new ability to skip over cutscenes. While this option might not be for everyone, it is a feature that has been asked for numerous times in the past. So, for those that are interested in being able to fast-track back to gameplay, that option is now available. Players will also be able to skip tutorial dialogue, as well as fast-forward through dialogue when in-game.

Another way the team is streamlining this experience is by doing so with item information. The explanation given for collectible items, especially for commonly found things like materials, will only pop up upon that first discovery. This will make it even more time-efficient when focusing on the gaming experience, which pairs nicely with the new autosave feature being implemented.
