Google Is Ending Its First Party Game Development, Closing Two Studios

3 years 2 months ago

Google is ending its exclusive Stadia game development initiatives and closing its two internal studios, Kotaku reported earlier today. Google's development houses in both Los Angeles and Montreal will be closed, affecting "around 150" employees. Kotaku broke the news just minutes before Google issued its own statement from Phil Harrison, vice president and general manager of Stadia, about its shifting business directions with Stadia.

Jade Raymond, most well known for her work at Ubisoft on the Assassin's Creed series, will also be leaving the company and her position as the head of Stadia Games and Entertainment (SG&E). According to Kotaku's report, Google said it's trying to find displaced Stadia employees new jobs within the company, something echoed by Harrison, who said, "Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them."

God Of War PS5 Update Drops Tomorrow

3 years 2 months ago

Get ready to "Boy!" all over again with this generation of consoles because the God of War PS5 update is set to go live tomorrow, February 2.

God of War got a juicy revamp with Cory Barlog and his team at Santa Monica. Seeing Kratos in his new role as a father was a breath of fresh air for the franchise, taking a beloved series even further with a heartwrenching story and gameplay mechanics to die for.

The PlayStation 5 update goes live on Tuesday, February 2, and will be a free download for those that own the game. In a detailed blog over on the official Santa Monica Studios website, a few outliers about the free patch were offered so fans know what to expect before diving in.

Players will be able to choose between two options: one option that favors performance versus one option that favors resolution. The update also includes synching to 60 FPS, 4K Checkerboard Resolution, and 2160p.

For those that want to play the original God of War (2018) experience on their PS5s, there is an option to do just that with the Original Performance Experience selection within the resolution settings. This will keep the 4K Checkerboard Resolution but drops the FPS down to 30, instead of the 60.

It's also important to note that a 4K device is required in order to get the optimal 4K experience.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Valentine's Day Items Are Available Now

3 years 2 months ago

Two new limited-time Animal Crossing: New Horizons Valentine's Day items are available now, bringing a little more lovey-doveyness to islands everywhere.

Two new Valentine's Day items are available now with a chocolate heart and a heart-shaped bouquet, with more on the way leading up to the event itself on February 14.

For those players looking to get those sweet tooth cravings satiated in-game, both of the newly added items can be bought from the Seasonal Tab in the Nook Shopping center. Before buying, note that each item retails for 1,200 Bells each. Not horrible, but you're definitely going to want to be aware of that when budgeting for special items.

The two additions are available alongside a few Groundhog's Day goodies, which are still available until February 3, including:

Apex Legends Season 8 Update Adds New Character and More Changes

3 years 2 months ago

Respawn Entertainment released the patch notes for the upcoming Season 8 update for Apex Legends containing a new character, weapon, and several changes and fixes.

The new playable character Fuse, revealed last month, will allow players to carry extra grenades, fire cluster bombs, or block off teams with circles of fire.

The other new addition to the game is the 30-30 Repeater, a heavy ammo lever-action rifle that reloads one round at a time and has a built-in charge for higher damage shots with a short build-up. Season 8 also introduces Gold-tier magazines that automatically reload weapons when holstered with the same capacity as Purple magazines.

The game’s first map Kings Canyon will receive a makeover with new areas and some pathways or places opening up to allow more open rotations and space.

A few characters received changes such as a slightly larger hitbox for the popular Wraith, Crypto can longer stick Arc Stars to his drone, and Mirage’s decoys will now create footstep sounds “in a limited capacity.”

Nippon Ichi Software Teases A Mysterious New Game

3 years 2 months ago

Today prolific Gifu-based Japanese developer Nippon Ichi Software opened a new teaser site for a “new title.”

One thing is for sure: Nippon Ichi certainly loves its teaser sites, so this shouldn’t surprise anyone.

The teaser site includes only some slightly disturbing imagery and a video that doesn’t show all that much.

If you’re wondering, the Japanese text at the beginning is simply a content warning and an encouragement to watch it with dad and mom.

That being said, when the screen shakes, a frame-by-frame analysis reveals the two images you can see under the video.

Google Winding Down Internal SG&E Studio; Switching Focus to Stadia Platform

3 years 2 months ago

Google appears to be moving on from the dream of having their own internal studios developing exclusive games for their Stadia platform.

Today, in a press release, Google announced that they are winding down the work that is being done at SG&E, an internal development studio, and will no longer be investing in future games aside from what is already planned for the near-term, citing exponentially rising costs in developing “best-in-class” games.

Alongside this announcement, Google also announced that Jade Raymond would be leaving the company and that “most” of the SG&E team would be moving onto new roles.

Here’s a key part of the release for more context:

Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games. With the increased focus on using our technology platform for industry partners, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities. We greatly appreciate Jade’s contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them.

Judgment Coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Stadia in April

3 years 2 months ago
Judgment, the Yakuza spin-off, is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Stadia on April 23. Originally a PS4 exclusive, the action game will come to new platforms with all of its DLC, "refined" visuals, 60 FPS performance, and improved loading times. It will be released at a $39.99 price point (UK and AU prices not available at time of writing). Sega confirmed to IGN that cross-buy will not be supported for PS4 and PS5, and we could not get an answer on whether progress can be carried over from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. Furthermore, RGG Studios says it does not have plans to release Judgement for PC at this time. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=judgment-next-gen-version-screenshots&captions=true"] Set in the same world as Yakuza, and in its familiar Kamurocho district, Judgment tells a very different story, with an almost entirely new cast of characters. Centred on lawyer-turned-private detective Takayuki Yagami, the game follows a muder mystery, alongside the Yakuza series' usual bizarre sidequests and activities. We awarded Judgment an 8.2/10 review back in 2019, calling it "a superficial detective experience, but an extremely good Yakuza one." How Destruction AllStars' Delay Helped the Team Prep a PS Plus Launch

3 years 2 months ago
Originally scheduled as a day-one PS5 launch exclusive, Lucid Games’ Destruction AllStars was pushed into February for a planned debut as a PlayStation Plus game. And ss Lucid and Sony XDEV team members tell IGN, the delay was in part to properly allow for that PS Plus launch, with the added benefit of making some adjustments that might have needed to wait for post-launch updates. “It made sense [to delay and go to PS Plus] just as a predominantly online multiplayer game. It absolutely made sense to go out to that widest audience possible. And what better way to do that than to the PlayStation Plus audience,” XDEV Senior Producer John MacLaughlin told IGN in an interview ahead of AllStars’ launch. MacLaughlin also noted that the developers have taken that time to prep their backend and servers accordingly to handle the potentially larger audience. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/01/27/destruction-allstars-state-of-play-video"] And AllStars Game Director Colin Berry noted how the move was something the Lucid and XDEV teams were eager to pursue.

God of War getting 60fps/4K "enhanced performance" graphics mode on PS5

3 years 2 months ago

God of War (the 2018 one, that is) will be getting a welcome visual boost on PS5 tomorrow, 2nd February, courtesy of Sony Santa Monica's new Enhanced Performance Experience update.

As explained in a new developer blog, tomorrow's God of War update will introduce a brand-new default graphics mode option designed to "get the most out of the increased performance capabilities of the PlayStation 5".

Up until now, PlayStation 5 owners playing God of War have been able to take advantage of the two graphics modes introduced in the PlayStation Pro version of the game - one favouring performance, which unlocks the frame rate but restricts resolution to 1080p, and the other offering a checkerboard 4K resolution locked to 30fps.

Sega's Yakuza-adjacent Judgment is no longer a PlayStation exclusive, is coming to current-gen consoles in April

3 years 2 months ago

Back in 2019 Sega unleashed Judgment out into the world: a spinoff of sorts for the Yakuza series that focused on detective Takayuki Yagami.

It was a success for the publisher, which I'm sure came as a relief given that it probably seemed like a gamble at the time: detaching itself from the Yakuza name. Either way it paid off, doubly so given that Sega is giving it a new lease on life very soon.

Announced today, Sega is bringing Judgment to the PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X/S platforms on April 23 for $39.99. There's a few things to unpack here, beyond the Stadia push, most notably the Xbox Series X release.

As you may recall, Judgment was originally a PS4 exclusive up until, well, today. It was one of many gets for Sony in the previous generation, but now, with Sega cozying up to Microsoft and putting multiple Yakuza games on Game Pass, this move makes a ton of sense.

As far as advancements go, Sega says that the game has "refined visuals" and now runs at 60 FPS, with "improved load times" and "all previously released DLC" included.

Since this was a massive "wait and see" kind of game, getting everything with all of the current-generation bells and whistles sounds like a perfect way to jump right in with two feet. It'll hit all of the aforementioned platforms on April 23.

Google calls it quits on internally developed Stadia games

3 years 2 months ago

We tend to associate Stadia with third-party games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Cyberpunk 2077 rather than home-grown games created from within Google, and that'll remain the case. As announced today, the company is moving away from developing games internally. The other shoe has dropped.

Google isn't abandoning the Stadia technology or brand, but it "will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team [Stadia Games and Entertainment], beyond any near-term planned games," according to Stadia VP Phil Harrison. In a blog post, he cited the "exponentially" rising costs involved with "creating best-in-class games from the ground up."

"Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles," he said. "We're committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them." At least one high-profile name, Jade Raymond, is out – she "decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities."

According to reporting from Kotaku, Google's closure of its Montréal and Los Angeles development studios will "impact around 150 developers." When I covered the latter studio's formation in 2020, I remarked that it was "wild to think about where this service will be several years from now."

Blizzard Reveals Impressive Arthas Helm Of Domination Replica

3 years 2 months ago

Blizzard is celebrating 30 years of fandom glory this year and a small part of the celebratory festivities includes a first look at an impressive Helm of Domination replica. This collectible comes at a good time, considering Sylvanas destroyed it in the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands DLC.

While the in-game helmet is used to control the Scourge, this replica (seen above) just looks really cool in your house. Still, it's an impressive take on an important aspect of World of Warcraft lore and its painstakingly detailed finish makes this a worthy trophy for any hardcore fan (or a casual one, since collectibles are for everyone).

The helmet itself comes in at over 15 inches – 17 if you count the stand – and is an exact replica of the powerful WoW artifact. Forged according to the Jailer's will, the Helm of Domination was meant to be the vessel of Death's influence on Azeroth. The Nathrezim imprisoned the spirit of the orc chieftain Ner'zhul within the helm, giving the chieftan command over a vast army of undead Scourge. The fallen Prince Arthas Menethil freed the Helm from the Frozen Throne, donning it to take up the mantle of the Lich King. That was until Sylvanas Windrunner said "haha, just kidding, I'll take that."

Overwatch Lunar New Year Event Begins Thursday

3 years 2 months ago

Fans are waiting with bated breath for any inkling of Overwatch 2 news (and they might not have to wait much longer with BlizzCon Online happening this month), but in the meantime, the Overwatch in-game event calendar presses on. Just a week removed from the Kanezaka challenge centered on Hanzo, and less than a month after the conclusion of its latest event, Winter Wonderland 2020, Overwatch players can begin getting excited for the Lunar New Year 2021 event: Year of the Ox.

As usual, fans can expect new and returning skins, emotes, voice lines, highlight intros, and sprays. Those who jump into the mix can also likely look forward to weekly challenges to unlock exclusive skins, player icons, and sprays, plus special limited-time event-specific modes; the Lunar New Year event typically revives the Capture the Flag mode in the Arcade section of the menu.

Yakuza Spinoff Judgment Coming To New Gen, PC, Stadia In April

3 years 2 months ago

If you missed out on the Yakuza spinoff Judgment when it hit PlayStation 4 in 2019, you’ll soon have another chance to check out the detective thriller. Sega has announced that a remastered version of Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio’s game will be coming not only to PlayStation 5 but also the Xbox Series X/S and Google Stadia on April 23.

Judgment is getting a bit of an upgrade during the transition, too, with shorter load times, 60 frames-per-second gameplay, and the inclusion of all of its previously released DLC. The re-release is priced at $39.99. A Sega representative told us there aren’t any cross-buy plans, so if you’ve already purchased the game on PlayStation 4 you’ll have to buy it again to enjoy the PlayStation 5 enhancements.

Judgment isn’t my favorite game in the Yakuza universe, but it’s a solid entry that brings plenty of new ideas to the familiar structure. It’s set in the same Kamurocho district that longtime Yakuza fans have etched into their memory, but you don’t need to come into the game with any prior knowledge. It features a standalone story starring a down-on-his-luck investigator, Takayuki Yagami, who uses his perception and deductive reasoning to solve cases. Failing that, he’s also a pretty capable fighter.

Apple's iOS 14.5 Will Support DualSense And Xbox Series X Controllers

3 years 2 months ago

Apple has released iOS 14.5 for public beta testers today. Per The Verge, the most exciting feature in terms of gaming is controller support for the PlayStation 5’s DualSense and the Xbox Series X controller.

There’s no confirmation on when the update will go live for everyone, but iOS 14.5 allows users to use the new-gen controllers for the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS. This is on top of the existing support of the last-gen controllers. While it might not be the most exciting news for some, having more controller options for mobile gaming (specifically for Apple Arcade) is always welcomed, not to mention getting extra mileage out of your kind-of-expensive gamepads. The new consoles have gradually found support outside of their platforms; for example, both controllers recently became playable on Nvidia's Shield TV for Android.

Yakuza Spinoff Judgment Getting Remastered For PS5, Xbox Series X In April

3 years 2 months ago

Sega and developer RGG Studio announced that they are re-releasing Judgment--the Yakuza series spinoff that first launched in 2019 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive--for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Stadia. The game will be remastered with "refined visuals" and will run at 60 fps to take advantage of the new hardware. You also won't have to wait long; this new version is set to launch on April 23 this year for $39.99 USD.

Judgment takes place in the same universe as the Yakuza franchise but tells an entirely separate story from the mainline games. While it uses the familiar setting of Kamurocho and incorporates a few recognizable elements, such as the Tojo Clan and crime drama, you won't need an extensive Yakuza background to enjoy it. You play as a Takayuki Yagami, a disgraced lawyer turned private detective who uncovers a much larger conspiracy--it's a gripping story with a different tone from the Yakuza games but still has the same storytelling qualities.

The game plays much like previous Yakuza games with action brawler combat, however Yagami is a lot more acrobatic and it influences the way he fights. And Kamurocho is again a lively open city full of side quests and minigames to fill out the world. You'll do detective work as well, investigating environments to find clues and questioning key witnesses and suspects to advance the plot.

Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story Gets Release Date on PS4; Developer Confirms It Won’t Be Censored

3 years 2 months ago

Today Sense – 不祥的预感: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story developer Suzaku announced a release date for PS4 on Kickstarter.

We learn that the game is coming to Sony’s console on Feb. 12, or more precisely, between Feb. 11 and Feb. 12 depending on your time zone.

It will also run on PS5 via backward compatibility, even if the developer can’t guarantee that a PS5-specific version of the game will come, as they had to use an older version of Unity in order to be able to release the game on PS Vita.

Unfortunately, there is still no release sate for the PS Vita version of the game due to lack of responsiveness by the team at Sony that takes care releases on the portable console. That being said, publisher Top Hat is working hard to establish communication and release on the 12th, but they can’t guarantee Sony will get back to them in time.

The PS Vita version has already been certified. The issue is simply about getting a date for the PSN listing.

We also get the confirmation that the game will not be consored on PlayStation platforms as promised by Top Hat Studios a while ago.

If you don’t care for waiting, Sense – 不祥的预感: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story is already available on PC and Nintendo Switch. Incidentally, a patch for the Switch version of the game is currently in the works.

Incredible Video Replaces Mario With the Scary Piano From Super Mario 64

3 years 2 months ago

The piano from Big Boo’s Haunt in Super Mario 64 is by far the scariest part of that entire game.

Let me set the scene. You’re already on edge just being in Big Boo’s Haunt. You have Boos constantly harassing you, a creepy circus going on in the basement, and just a miasma of general uneasiness permeating everywhere throughout the level.

Then when you least expect it, a seemingly innocent-looking piano in a room just comes to life out of nowhere and takes a massive chunk out of your health. The initial shock of this moment will live rent-free in your nightmares forever and make you permanently distrust pianos.

What if the scary piano was the hero all along? Well, it’s definitely not, but at least in this YouTube video from prominent Mario YouTuber, Kaze Emanuar, it can live out its fantasy of being the star.

Behold a truncated playthrough of Super Mario 64 as the scary piano from Big Boo’s Haunt. Warning, you might shed a tear at the ending.
