Planet Zoo is getting penguins, otters, and a new 'animal talks' activity on December 8

3 years 3 months ago

Whether you're here for the penguins (please read that in Benedict Cumberbatch's voice) or you're just sticking to the ongoing free content updates, December 8 will be a busy day for Planet Zoo players.

The next slice of DLC for Planet Zoo is the Aquatic Pack, and in terms of new species, it's adding the king penguin, giant otter, diamondback terrapin, Cuvier's dwarf caiman, and grey seal (please sing that like Elton John). For $10, you're also getting 170-ish scenery customization pieces (these numbers always sound inflated) and a challenge scenario set in Oregon that revolves around a "drained riverbed."

On the free-content front, Planet Zoo is getting update 1.4 on December 8. Apart from access to the new Water Temperature Regulator and Underwater Feeder (to coincide with the DLC theme), the update will add a summary screen for transport rides, informational "animal talks" that you can organize with newly-hired Educator staff members, and a multi-select option for animal storage in Franchise mode.

The submersible feeding station will only be compatible with the saltwater crocodile at first, but Frontier Developments says it "will be adding [support for] more animals in the future."

Mega Man X and Battle Network live on in these new official models

3 years 3 months ago

Mega Man merch may never die.

The Mega Man series died at one point. Then it came back to life! It may die again. But we will always have merch. Merch...never changes.

Like the George Lucas of the video game world, Capcom has more merch SKUs each year than there are Mega Man games at this point. Many of them are figures and the like, ranging from the most casual blind box packages to the discerning hobbyist models. Manufacturer Kotobukiya has been partaking in that latter line for a while, and this past week, they just unveiled a few more beauties.

Shown off via their new livestream (the model talk for Mega Man X starts about 35 minutes in, timestamped here, with the Battle Network model talk kicking off around an hour and a half), Mega Man X and Battle Network non-painted models are incoming. The Mega Man X version will be more posable, even including an option to make him look like he's jumping through a boss door, or squinting while holding in a charged buster shot.

The Battle Network model has its own flair, with cuter more casual poses, as well as the option to wield his signature sword. You can find more info on the figures on this landing page. At this time, release dates and pricing are "undecided," as per a listing on the site.

Empire of Sin Review

3 years 3 months ago

WW1 vet-turned-mob enforcer Hugh Miller has fallen head-over-heels in love with another gangster, Tammy Trucco. The next firefight they and the rest of my squad get into, Tammy eats a bullet; boom, dead. Reeling from that and a recent demotion, Hugh has had enough to outweigh his strong sense of loyalty and he quits my gang in a huff. It’s a dramatic moment that underscores what Empire of Sin does best: Well-written, complex personal relationships, both positive and negative, that develop between your crew of criminal soldiers and make this management and tactical strategy game work.

Hugh then immediately turns around and accepts a rehire offer, completely undermining the gravity of those events. That’s a great example of how Empire of Sin’s technical ricketiness gets in the way of just about everything it attempts to do well as you play the role of a mob boss in 1920s Chicago, building a criminal empire of illegal booze and gunning down the competition. It's an ambitious and complex mix of genres with a cool setting, but the result is riddled with janky bits, quests that feel unfinished, unreliable balance, and a boatload of bugs. It just isn't a good game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/empire-of-sin-game-pillars-combat-overview-trailer"]

For what it’s worth, Empire of Sin really embraces the Roaring ‘20s style, showing off Chicago streets that are initially fun to navigate and a roaring soundtrack of jazz mixed with some more modern pieces. The writing and weird cast of characters, both fictional and fictionalized alike, have a lot of charm. There's even really delightfully over-the-top voice acting for nearly every character, littered with standout performances like gangster boss Frankie Donovan, aged Western sharpshooter Grover Monks, or the hammy duo performance of a gambling bookie and a button man. (They're in love.) The charm wore off a lot quicker than I’d have liked, though.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered now has a two-hour demo on Switch, PS4, and PC

3 years 3 months ago

If you've yet to experience the chaotic splendour that is The Wonderful 101: Remastered but still remain sufficiently intrigued, developer Platinum Games is now offering a free two-hour demo of the game for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC.

Available to download now, the new Wonder-Size Cadet demo (as it's officially known) features Wonderful 101: Remastered's complete prologue and Operation 001 - offering a reasonable introduction to the game's decidedly idiosyncratic isometric action, in which players command a screen full of miniature heroes, battling in unison.

In-game currency and support items are provided from the off in order to get the action moving, and all progress can be carried over to the full game, should you decide to make a purchase.

December 2020: Major Game Releases For PS5/PS4, Xbox Series X/One, Nintendo Switch, And PC

3 years 3 months ago

December is officially here, which means we're quickly coming up on the end of 2020. That doesn't mean there are no new games to look forward to before the year wraps up, however. Although this month is fairly light in terms of new releases, there are still some notable games coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Switch, and last-gen consoles over the next few weeks.

Undoubtedly the biggest release is CD Projekt Red's highly anticipated (and long-delayed) Cyberpunk 2077, but it's not the only notable game coming out this month. Life Is Strange developer Dontnod is releasing its surreal thriller Twin Mirror at the start of the month, while Ubisoft's Breath of the Wild-inspired epic Immortals Fenyx Rising arrives on December 3.

There are also some exciting retro releases out this month. Nintendo is officially localizing the very first Fire Emblem game, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, for Switch on December 4, and Square Enix is bringing the first three Final Fantasy Legend games to the hybrid console later this month in Collection of SaGa.

Rocket League went free-to-play in September, kicking off "Season 1" of the game, which is now 5 years old. Now developer Psyonix is making up for lost time, launching Season 2 on December 9. The theme of this season is music, and the game will add new tracks from EDM artist Kaskade to the game's soundtrack.

The first of Kaskade's new tracks, Flip Reset, is available now. More tracks will follow in the update.

Along with new tracks, players will also have the ability to choose a "Player Anthem" from the soundtrack. This means that whenever they score a goal, their song will play, letting you really soak in your achievement after a good goal. All players will also have access to a new arena, called Neon Fields, which is EDM-inspired and covered in cool glowing lights.

Every day you'll get bonuses for logging in, while there are also weekly cosmetic bonuses that can be claimed through codes. Here are the first week of treats--you'll have to wait to see what the next four weeks have in store.

Dead by Daylight Advent Calendar Week 1

Cosmetic codes

  • December 1-3: Killer’s Stocking Charm
    • Code: NAUGHTYSTOCKING
December 4-6: Zarina’s Snap Snap Sweater
    • Code: SNAPSNAP

Currencies for log-in

  • December 1: 10,000 Bloodpoints
  • December 2: 1,000 Iridescent Shards

The Advent Calendar announcement notes that Dead by Daylight will focus on "event" celebrations like this going forward, and thus activations will look a bit different from now on. "We will still be celebrating Winter, Lunar New Year, etc. but are taking new approaches to them to better define and focus our efforts on those larger ones," the post reads. "This means that you won’t see special event gameplay mechanics or earnable cosmetics for these Celebrations, but will continue to see activations such as login rewards, Bloodweb items, and themed assets."

Twitch Ran Into Some Problems After Fortnite's Galactus Event

3 years 3 months ago

Fortnite's latest Marvel event, which brought the devourer of worlds himself, Galactus, to the game, was a huge draw, but it also seemingly caused some issues.

Streaming site Twitch reported that its platform experienced a problem that led to "multiple service issues." In some cases, this problem prevented people from accessing the site and logging in altogether.

Thankfully for Twitch users, the issues were fixed less than an hour after they were first widely reported. Twitch should be operating normally now, but as always, your mileage may vary.

The Giant Dish From James Bond Classic GoldenEye Has Collapsed

3 years 3 months ago

The 1995 James Bond movie GoldenEye and the 1997 game based on it included an epic action sequence at the end where 007 fights on a giant radio telescope.

That telescope, which is located at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, has now collapsed. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

This news comes not long after it was announced that the dish was being decommissioned over concerns about its structural integrity.

Halo Infinite Dev Responds To Frustrated Fans, Asks For Patience

3 years 3 months ago

Halo Infinite's road to release hasn't exactly been smooth. Developer 343 Industries has experienced a good deal of high-level staff turnover, the game was delayed from its place as an Xbox Series X launch title, and what we have seen of the game has been underwhelming in the eyes of some in the Halo community.

Halo community director Brian Jarrard responded to these concerns on Twitter recently. He said he understands the frustration fans are feeling, because he has felt it too. He asked for patience and understanding as 343 finishes the game.

"As an avid fan of many properties (games, movies, TV, music) I 100% understand and appreciate the passion the Halo community has. I also understand the frustration when things don’t go the way you want or it feels like you're somehow being wronged or not heard," Jarrard said.

You Can't Play Fortnite Right Now Until Season 5 Starts

3 years 3 months ago

Fortnite's big Galactus event has come and gone, and it was an exciting, if somewhat brief, live event. It concluded with the confirmation of when Season 5 will begin, but perhaps more notable right now is that you can't play Fortnite. Servers are down, and that's by design.

The live event concluded with a "to be continued in Season 5" message, along with a seven-hour countdown that reveals a start time for Season 5: 12 AM ET on December 2. However, rather than sending players back to the menu to continue playing or grinding away at the battle pass, the only option is "exit." That closes out the game, and re-opening it only replays this short message from the end of the event. There's no way to access any component of the game right now, even including something like Fortnite Creative or Save the World, let alone the Battle Royale mode that functions as the game's main aspect.

As Epic said in advance, you can't replay the event, but it turns out you can't do anything. Hopefully you didn't have plans to play Fortnite tonight. This isn't the first time Epic has done this--previously, it shut down Fortnite for days, which proved to be quite the unexpected viral moment. It's not often a massively popular game is shut down in that fashion. In this case, the wait won't be quite so long--following the conclusion of the Galactus event, there were just over seven hours until Season 5 begins and Fortnite returns.

Fortnite's Galactus Event Adds More Confusion To The Battle Royale's Lore

3 years 3 months ago

No one predicted that Fortnite's Galactus event would have players flying battle buses in a mission that felt like it was straight out of Star Fox. The event, which played like a souped-up Disneyland ride, was a lot of fun, but it only added to the random jumble of themes that makes up the Fortnite universe.

The event saw the entire lobby, along with Iron Man, Galactus, and other heroes, get sucked into what's called the "Zero Point" after Galactus tried to absorb it. The Zero Point has been a part of Fortnite's storyline since Chapter 1's Season 4 and is said to be a singularity that doesn't abide by the laws of space and time. That's the reason why different realities from the Marvel and Fortnite universes collided this season.

Galactus trying to absorb the Zero Point.

The event ended with Jonesy, one of the mainstays of Fortnite's narrative, lying face down in his office. He wakes up right before the screen cut to black. We saw Jonesy two seasons ago during The Device event in the same office, although he wasn't knocked out that time. Players believe that Jonesy works for a company that runs Fortnite as some sort of simulation and Season 5 may explore more of his background.

Martha Is Dead Coming To PS5 Alongside PC, Xbox Versions

3 years 3 months ago

The thriller game Martha is Dead is coming to PS5, along with the already-announced PC and Xbox versions. It's scheduled for Q1 2021, and the announcement suggests that all three versions will hit simultaneously.

The game takes place against the backdrop of World War 2 amid the Italian countryside. A young woman, Martha, is found drowned on the shores of a lake. Her twin sister sets out to solve the murder as the war approaches closer to their home. LKA says that the story ties in history, superstition, folklore, and psychological trauma.

That all sounds pretty spooky by itself, but it's matched by an equally shudder-inducing trailer depicting the basic plotline with marrionettes. There's nothing creepier than marionettes. That's just a science fact.

Fortnite Nexus War Clips At Risk of DMCA Takedown, Twitch Cautions

3 years 3 months ago
Fortnite held its Nexus War finale live event and had players around the world take on Galactus in an epic battle, but the use of AC/DC's Demon Fire during one sequence has caused Twitch to warn those who streamed the event that their clips may be at risk of a DMCA takedown. Following the event, which you can see below, @TwitchSupport tweeted out that "If you streamed the Fortnite Nexus War event, and you want to be cautious about DMCA risk from the music in that event, consider exporting/downloading and then deleting any related VODs or Clips." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/01/fortnite-galactus-full-event-no-commentary"] @FortniteStatus gave the warning a bit before the event, saying that even it "cannot prevent your VOD/clip content from getting flagged by the platform's copyright detection systems." It recommended muting the VoDs or turning them off completely. Streamer DrLupo semi-jokingly tweeted in response that this was the reason he "muted it today and had chat sing country roads." This is another chapter in the saga of issues streamers have had with DMCA takedowns in 2020. Amidst these problem, Twitch has acknowledged that it handled the DMCA controversy poorly and put streamers at risk of losing their accounts because they played licensed music during their broadcasts that would then become at-risk VoDs. The Fortnite Galactus event culminated in Fortnite being taken down in preparation for Chapter 2 - Season 5.

The Xbox Series S Can Play PS2 Games, Apparently

3 years 3 months ago
Xbox has made backward compatibility a cornerstone feature on its next-gen Series S and Series X consoles, but I doubt the company intended for the systems to be used to play PlayStation 2 games. According to YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer, a loophole in the Series X|S’s Developer Mode lets users boot a variety of emulators, including ones that support PS2, Dreamcast, GameCube, and Wii games. Modern Vintage Gamer, who ran his tests on an Xbox Series S, proceeded to demo a variety of older games running off the RetroArch emulator, including God of War, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2, and more. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-xbox-series-x-games&captions=true"] Although not official, it certainly appears that the Xbox Series X|S can play more PS2 games than the PS5, which only supports backward compatibility for PS4 games and select PS3 games through PS Now. Check out Modern Vintage Gamer’s YouTube channel for a full rundown on their experiments with the Xbox Series S Developer Mode. Although tested on an Xbox Series S, they said the Xbox Series X should be on par, though not necessarily better than the Series S. Check out IGN's Xbox Series X review, and Xbox Series X wiki for more on Microsoft's latest bit hardware. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt T.M. Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Horizon Zero Dawn and The Surge 2 Added to PS Now Lineup

3 years 3 months ago

Ever since the official unveiling of the PS5 earlier this year, it became pretty clear that Sony was committed to focusing on their PS Now subscription service and bolster it with more attractive titles that would actually turn it into a worthy competitor with Xbox’s Game Pass subscription service. And from what we’ve seen so far, it’s definitely starting to look like a very compelling service to try out.

Just today, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog that three new games have been added to the PS Now lineup, including Horizon Zero Dawn, The Surge 2, and Stranded Deep.

While these games have certainly been out for a while now, there’s no denying that Horizon Zero Dawn in particular is a very attractive game to add to your library with that subscription service. Especially considering that a full-blown sequel is in the works, now’s a great time to check out the first game if you haven’t already.

PS Now also allows you to choose between streaming or downloading the game, on your PS4, PS5, or PC, making it easily accessible for anyone who decides to subscribe.

The post Horizon Zero Dawn and The Surge 2 Added to PS Now Lineup appeared first on Twinfinite.

Kingdom Hearts Composer Yoko Shimomura Talks ‘Dearly Beloved’, Evolution of the Track & More

3 years 3 months ago

Just a couple weeks back, we saw the release of Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, a rhythm game that was primarily meant to take fans down a nostalgia trip filled with iconic music from the series. With that in mind, it was the perfect time for series composer Yoko Shimomura to talk a little about the main theme of the game, Dearly Beloved, how it was conceived, and how the track has evolved over the past decade.

When asked about how she had originally conceived the track, Shimomura explained that she started by looking at the “themes and content of the early part of the game.”

‘She recalls: “I was playing the beginning of the game, set in the Destiny Islands, and I was struck by a lot of imagery about the sea. Dearly Beloved just came to my mind one day, while I was thinking about that – picturing the sea and the waves.”
Although her vision for the track was clear, implementing it into the game proved tricky due to the technical limitations of the PlayStation 2 console:
“In terms of technology, the sound came from hardware – tone generators, synths, samplers, and so on. We were only able to record two songs in the studio – the majority of the sound was generated internally by the PS2 and I really struggled to improve the sound quality of the instruments using the hardware.”’

As the series progressed and more sequels began to spawn, she explained how the track evolved along with it. For instance, the rendition in Chain of Memories was meant to evoke a “hazy, somewhat ephemeral feeling” while the Birth by Sleep version was meant to be more somber and tragic, resulting in Shimomura using “the sorrowful violin in the middle of the track and the lively piano at the end to portray these themes and emotions.”

Fortnite returns from downtime with big changes, and a new chunk of its own story

3 years 3 months ago

Last night, Fortnite bid farewell to its Marvel season in a game-changing live event which wiped away all trace of its superheroes.

Today, Fortnite returns - around 9am UK time - and picks up the pieces from that big cliffhanger. We're back on a familiar map - though with some notable changes.

For those who prefer Fortnite to focus on its own storyline and original characters, there seems plenty more of that in the new Chapter 2 Season 5 - albeit with a guest appearance from Star Wars' Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.

Switch Port Report: Sam & Max Save the World Remastered

3 years 3 months ago

It’s a real shame the story of Telltale Games ended the way it did because, at one point in its brief history, it was one of the most exciting developers in the industry. With access to some of the top IPs, including The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Stranger Things, there was no shortage of stories it could tell, just a shortage of money to keep everything going.

It may be gone, but some of its work will live on with other developers who are keen are keeping its legacy alive. And the best way to do that is to remaster those old games as well as Skunkape Games has done here with Sam & Max Save the World.
