The Strange, Essential Worlds Of Cosmo D

3 years 10 months ago

I’ve been covering indie games here at Kotaku since 2016 and sharing all sorts of fantastical worlds with readers. Some are loud and flashy. Others are moody. Some of the best have come from the mind of developer Cosmo D. In February, I showed off his next game, Tales From Off Peak City. In the lead up to its official…

It's May Day in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so get your free stuff before it's gone

3 years 10 months ago

As Tom Nook puts it, May Day is to celebrate "those who work hard." Yep, it's May Day in Animal Crossing: New Horizons from today through May 7, so make sure you make plans to boot the game up between now and then.

So what does May Day entail? Well there's two facets, so brace for minor spoilers if you intend to go in completely blind (either way, I'm not spoiling the main surprise guest).

A recent amiibo patent could bring the figures back to life in a new game

3 years 10 months ago

The whole amiibo craze has cooled down considerably in the past several months. In fact, no new amiibo have been confirmed or released since January 2020, making it the biggest drought in the history of the line since it started all the way back in November of 2014 (I remember, I was there day one). Time flies!

While the toys to life crash is partially to blame, Nintendo's own handling of the figures, particularly around the calamitous Wave 4 stock problems, also likely contributed to their eventually downfall.

Nintendo branched out from the toys, though. In addition to in-game functionality akin to DLC, they also manufactured amiibo cards and even published a few amiibo-centric games like Animal Crossing amiibo Festival and Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge. Those efforts were very short-lived, but thanks to a new patent, that could change.

Little Town Hero: Big Idea Edition delayed until late June

3 years 10 months ago

NIS America has announced that the Big Idea Edition of 2019 Switch release Little Town Hero will no longer meet its re-scheduled June 3 release date. It will now launch June 26 on PS4 and Switch.

Launching on Switch in October last year, the Game Freak-developed RPG tells a cutesy tale of a young kid named Axe, whose big dreams of an exciting, adventurous life become reality when squads of monsters attack his humble homestead. Armed with "Big Ideas," Axe and his friends must save the town and its people from the destructive monster menace.

The Big Idea physical edition contains a copy of the game itself, an art book, soundtrack CD, poster and lapel pin set. The Big Idea edition was originally scheduled to launch on April 23, before being put back to June 2, but it seems fans will now have to wait a couple of extra weeks to do the monster mash.

Little Town Hero is available now on Nintendo Switch.

Where are the secret boss fights in Streets of Rage 4?

3 years 10 months ago

Yesterday saw the release of Dotemu's excellent Streets of Rage 4. As such, you may have already thrown hands with classic SoR villains such as Nora, Garnet, and Barbon. But I know what you're thinking: "This is all well and good, Y Signal, but I want to beat up that tonally inappropriate alien guy from Streets of Rage 2."

Well, have I got the guide for you...

Streets of Rage 4 has several secret boss fights, which let players throw down with some classic 16-bit bosses on their pixelated stomping grounds. To access these fights, all you need do is bag yourself a taser and electrify one of several Bare Knuckle arcade cabs strewn throughout the city. In SoR 4, the taser is a fragile weapon, so be careful not to use it before it's helped you on your time-warping trip to the 1990s.

Unfortunately, completing these fights does not unlock anything new, but it's still a neat touch - yet another way that Streets of Rage 4 pays homage to its series' storied history. You can find the locations of four secret fights below. But these are early days, so who knows what else might be uncovered now that the game is in the hands of the public?

(The bosses themselves have not been revealed to keep the surprise element.)

Ghost of Tsushima “Samurai” PS4 Theme Coming With Special Editions Revealed & It’s Super-Stylish

3 years 10 months ago

Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima certainly appears to be a stylish game and looks like its “Samurai” PS4 theme is just as stylish.

Today the developer revealed a video of the theme, which will be included in its special editions. To be more specific, it’ll come with the Collector’s Edition and the Digital Deluxe edition.

You can watch it in action below and see poetry in motion.

The theme appears to be fully animated with an ink style similar to Japanese Sumi-e, and it includes its own custom music track. On top of that, icons are styled after Kamon, which are family crests used by samurai in ancient Japan.

This is in addition to the theme that will be granted for pre-orders, which is based on the beautiful cover artwork and that you can also see below.

Summer Game Fest is collecting displaced E3 announcements into a season of online events

3 years 10 months ago

As we’ve likely all heard, E3 is off this year thanks to the global Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. To replace the week-long announce-o-rama that happens each June, Geoff Keighley (Mr. Game Awards and Death Stranding cameo man) has announced a four month long online event called the Summer Game Fest running from May until August. Looks like he’s corralled all the usual big swingers together to deliver their planned announcements, trailers, and demos under his new banner. The king is dead. Long live the king, I suppose.

The 8 best Viking games to play before Assassin's Creed Valhalla

3 years 10 months ago

After watching the trailer a bajillion more times, I am extremely excited for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It’s been around 48 hours since the announcement and I cannot possibly retain this state for much longer. By the time the Christmas-ish release date rolls around I will either have exploded like a poor little meat balloon, or gone full circle and lapsed into a coma. Like the engines of the Enterprise, she cannae hold – definitely not for around six more months, anyway.

Thank god that Vikings are an enduring and popular theme for games, then! I can inoculate myself against disaster by playing a few of these existing ones while I wait. Such is the versatility of Vikings that they pop up in almost every genre imaginable, too. So if, like me, you are already on the edge of your seat (and that seat is in a longship), here are some recommendations for varied and quality video games that will get you prepared for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

BPM: Bullets Per Minute is a beat-based FPS that looks oh so satisfying to play

3 years 10 months ago

Plenty of FPS games will time their trailers so that all the shooting and kabooming happens on the beat (lookin’ at you, Borderlands 3), but in BPM: Bullets Per Minute that’s actually how it plays. I need you to do me a favor and stroll on in here to watch this rockn’ trailer that does it more justice than I can with my meager words. In brief though, you’re a valkyrie shooting and blasting hell creatures to the beat of some excellent rock opera tunes. It’s planned for an August 2020 release.

The original Star Wars Battlefront just got official online multiplayer support on Steam

3 years 10 months ago

UPDATE 8pm: Following the appearance of Star Wars Battlefront's online-multiplayer-revealing patch notes on Steam, word has emerged that the update is also now available in the GOG version (as on Steam, it's currently discounted). Better yet, cross-play is supported between both platforms, hopefully boosting the chances of finding an online game.

ORIGINAL STORY 5.55pm: If you've been looking for an excuse to pick up Star Wars Battlefront up again, you know, 16 years after it was released, now's the perfect time; entirely unexpectedly, developer Pandemic Studios' much-loved space shooter just got its online multiplayer mode restored on Steam.

The original Star Wars Battlefront (not to be confused with DICE's 2015 shooter of the same name) released all the way back in 2004 on PS2, Xbox, and PC, giving players the chance to battle their way to victory across a selection of familiar Star Wars locales - fighting from the perspective of either the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Galactic Republic, or the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and utilising multiple classes and vehicles.

Valorant Ranked System Explained: How Competitive Ranks And Tiers Work

3 years 9 months ago

Valorant has officially launched out of its closed beta, but players who were part of its early access period or tuned into streams of it might be surprised to find out that its ranked Competitive mode, which was offered alongside its default unrated game mode after a big update, is missing. According to Riot, this is both to give new players a chance to learn the game before being matched against players who may have an advantage from playing the beta, and to make sure the mode is stable. Competitive will be added back "a few patches" later after it has time to make some adjustments. The following Competitive explainer was written pre-launch, during Valorant's beta period, so it may contain information that is subject to change based on how Riot moves forward with its ranked system, but we'll keep it mostly intact for players curious about how it worked in the beta, and how it may work in the future.

Similar to games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Valorant's Competitive mode had to be unlocked after it was initially added to the beta. From there, players could start playing for a competitive rank, which serves as a reflection of their current skill level and affects how Valorant's matchmaking system pairs them with other players in future ranked play. But not everything about Valorant's ranked system is clear from the start. How many Unrated matches do you need to play before ranked mode unlocks and how do you earn your first rank? And what are the Valorant ranks anyway? Note that any or all of this information is subject to change as Riot continues to update Valorant in future patches.

Apex Legends Season 5 New Character Loba Has Already Appeared In-Game

3 years 10 months ago

Loba, the new playable character coming to Apex Legends in Season 5: Fortune's Favor, has already appeared in-game. You don't actually have to drop into a match to find the talented thief--just log into Apex Legends and wait.

If you wait long enough on the lobby screen, Loba will eventually appear in the background behind you and your party. She'll teleport in on the left side of the screen, silently stalk towards the right, give a playful nod and hair flick towards you, and then teleport off screen. You can see the scene play out below.

No Caption Provided

Given that we see Loba use this teleport technology in the Legacy of a Thief animated trailer, it may be safe to say that it's connected to one of her three in-game abilities. However, Respawn hasn't officially announced what Loba's passive, tactical, and ultimate abilities are so there's currently no way to know for sure.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Leaker Not Affiliated With Naughty Dog, Sony Confirms

3 years 10 months ago

Earlier last week, The Last of Us Part II had a lot of its narrative leaked online, ahead of its new launch date on June 19. Since the leak, it's been rumored that the source was a former Naughty Dog employee, but following an investigation by Sony this seems to not be the case.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony confirmed that it has identified the primary culprits for the leak, and that they are not affiliated to either Sony or Naughty Dog. The full statement, supplied by The Hollywood Reporter, reads, "SIE has identified the primary individuals responsible for the unauthorized release of TLOU2 assets. They are not affiliated with Naughty Dog or SIE."

Sony is limiting additional details, stating that the information is still important to an on-going investigation. It's unclear right now how someone unaffiliated to both Sony and Naughty Dog gained access to the assets that were leaked.

Dreams On PS4 Gets Free Demo And A Great Deal On The Full Game

If you've been curious about Media Molecule's community-driven game creation kit, Dreams, you now have the chance to try it out for free. A trial of Dreams is now available for download on PS4, with any progress you make carrying over if you decide to purchase it.

As expected, the trial for Dreams will be limited. You won't be able to play every game hosted by its players, but rather a subset selected by Media Molecule that show off some of the game's capabilities. You'll also have access to some creation tools, which allow you to get a basic feel for the suite of options open to you and give you a blank slate to experiment with.

Art's Dream, the single-player adventure within Dreams, will also be limited. Media Molecule says you'll have access to a slice of the campaign, which shows off some of the creation tools while also letting you play through in-house creations for inspiration.

Wonderful 101 Remastered Physical Copies Delayed Due To Coronavirus

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, developer Platinum Games has pushed back the release date for physical versions of The Wonderful 101: Remastered. The game will now arrive on store shelves on June 30 in North America and July 3 in Europe.

The remaster was originally slated to launch on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4 on May 19 in North America, May 22 in Europe, and June 11 in Japan. Valorant Ranked Mode Is Live Now

3 years 10 months ago

The Valorant beta is barely a month old but it's already gotten a big new addition: ranked mode. Riot Games teased the addition in recent patch notes, but said at the time that the actual feature would be coming in the near-future for those who have gotten into the beta.

Ranked mode will let you play on a more competitive level, but since this is the beta, any progress you earn will get wiped when the full game launches this summer. That means the addition of ranked is simply to put it through its paces. In a tweet announcing the opening of ranked, Riot mentioned it reserves the right to shut it off "if things get weird."

Other updates introduced in the patch include gameplay and balance changes, map updates, and tweaks to the UI and observer mode.

Star Wars Day 2020: Best May The 4th Video Game Deals For Switch, PS4, PC, And Xbox One

3 years 10 months ago

One of the biggest holidays of the year is here once again--yes, we're talking about Star Wars Day (May the 4th), of course. Every year, we celebrate all things Star Wars on May 4, and this Monday is bringing a plethora of deals on Star Wars games, merch, and more. While you can ring in the holiday by watching the entire Skywalker Saga on Disney Plus, you can also shop for a ton of great Star Wars games at reduced prices. Retailers and digital storefronts have been getting a jumpstart on Star Wars Day with early discounts on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is steeply discounted on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Meanwhile, Steam has a ridiculous 26-game bundle for $76.86.

We've rounded up the best Star Wars Day game deals--separated by retailer--that you can get in on right now. Steam and GOG are leading the way on PC with tons of classic Star Wars games for low prices. Console game deals aren't as robust, but you can still find some new adventures in a galaxy far, far away on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While major retailers are getting in on the May the 4th action, their game deals are a bit lacking compared to the digitial storefronts; however, you can snag a physical copy of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for just $35 at Amazon and Best Buy (please note that GameStop and Target are offering the game for $40, so we've left those deals out). So sit back, grab a new Star Wars game or two, and May the 4th be with you.

Stardew Valley launches an official forum, and it already has a lot of activity

3 years 10 months ago

Stardew Valley launched back in February of 2016, but at any given moment, you wouldn't think so! The passion for Stardew is just as strong as it was back when it was a little-known Harvest Moon contender, and developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has built up a huge community almost on his own.

While he did have some help from Chucklefish in terms of publishing and port duties, Barone decided to move to a more self-sufficient model back in late 2018, opting to take care of most of the versions of the game himself. In a way, the recent full launch of the forums feels like an extension of that.

Although Reddit primarily served as the stomping ground for a lot of Stardew players, the forums are a bit more welcoming and offer the same cooperative spirit as the core game. They just opened in earnest this past week, and are on the official site, sanctioned by Barone himself. In addition to tips and discussions, there's also a dedicated section for multiplayer (LFG - or "looking for group"). Nice!

Since the launch (and the soft launch before it) it's been filled with thousands of messages, so give it a go if you still play Stardew. Remember, there's even more updates on the way, as well as new games from Barone.

Summer Game Fest is bringing a bunch of game publishers together to share news and demos

3 years 10 months ago

[Update: The first streaming events have started appearing on the Summer Game Fest schedule.

Microsoft's Xbox Series X gameplay showcase episode of Inside Xbox is up first on May 7 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, and then there's going to be a "surprise game reveal" hosted by Geoff Keighley on May 12 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific. That's it for May, at least for now. The schedule will be updated "on a rolling basis as publishers announce events," so what's listed here today is just a fraction of the eventual lineup.

You can set calendar reminders directly from the Summer Game Fest site as events show up.]

With any luck, Summer Game Fest – an "all-digital consumer celebration" from May to August – will fill the game news void left by E3 and other canceled events. It's certainly got a lot of names attached. The big idea? To bring fans "a season of breaking news, in-game events, and free playable content."

It's all orchestrated by Geoff Keighley, because of course it is. He doesn't stop! The event is somewhat nebulous at this point, but practically speaking, it's an outlet for publishers to share news – and demos of unreleased games – under one banner. In other words, Summer Game Fest is a signal-boost for publishers' own initiatives. You'll still catch individual announcements on Twitch, YouTube, and the like.

8 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Concerns Only Us History Nerds Care About

3 years 10 months ago

Precious few RPGs have explored the Dark Ages and even less the Viking era of British history. It’s a three-hundred or so year period absolutely rife with opportunity for storytelling, a time when a dramatic clash of cultures had a pivotal effect on the political and sociological shaping of an entire continent. Also, axes, longships, and epic battles! All good reasons to be excited about Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Particularly so, given that while Assassin’s Creed stories have always played fast and loose with history, Ubisoft has typically done a great job recreating the look and feel of historical settings with commendable authenticity.

So much so, in fact, that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey debuted the Discovery Tour mode in 2018, an educational tool aimed at schools and universities that offered students a digital field trip across its ancient Greek setting.

As a history buff, it’s a feature I’d hoped would become a mainstay of the franchise moving forward. Well, that is until I saw this week’s big cinematic reveal of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which is riddled with so many baffling historical inaccuracies that now I think Discovery Tour might be better as a one-off.
