Assassin's Creed Valhalla Historian Talks Vikings' Image Problem, Women Warriors

3 years 11 months ago

Assassin's Creed Valhalla has been announced, featuring a new story revolving around Vikings. The series is known for its accurate depictions of historical time periods, and an interview with historian Thierry Noel sheds more light on how the time period and Norse people will be depicted. As it turns out, the common presumptions many people have about Vikings are only partially accurate and don't paint the whole picture.

To start, Noel is careful to define the word "Vikings" outside its usual pop-cultural imagery of brutal plunderers. He said that Vikings actually refers to the elite Norse class, which includes traders, explorers, and seafarers as well as invaders. Some of the history of Vikings was written by monks or victims of Viking invaders, which helped shape a more brutal and negative perception. That said, he points out that this is taking place in the Dark Ages, a period where relatively little is known compared to the surrounding Roman Empire era and medieval era. What we do know about the Vikings was that the society was surprisingly forward-thinking.

"The gap between the reality of Norse society and the image we have of the reckless Viking was really interesting to me," Noel told Ubisoft. "They were a fascinating society in terms of culture and pretty fair in the way they treated women, who had important rights at the time. It was certainly contradictory to the common image we have of Vikings."

Phil Spencer: No Delay Expected for Xbox Series X, But Game Production Is 'Bigger Unknown'

3 years 11 months ago
Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has reiterated that Xbox Series X isn't currently looking at any kind of launch delay, saying it's "in line with where we thought we would be", but has said that production of games themselves is the "bigger unknown" amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Alley, Spencer made clear that Xbox hardware development was continuing at a somewhat expected pace: "The teams are doing a really good job on keeping our hardware on track. On the hardware side we feel good about our plans. There's obviously some impact to schedules but, overall, I think we're in line with where we thought we would be." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/ac-valhallas-big-leap-to-ps5-xbox-series-x-next-gen-console-watch"] However, Spencer made clear that games production is less predictable because of its less centralised creation: "I'd say the bigger unknown is probably the game production, just being honest. Game production is a large-scale entertainment activity now; you have hundreds of people coming together, building assets, working through creative." It's worth noting that Spencer isn't saying that game delays are coming, just that they're harder to predict. "We're learning every day," he continued, "I still feel good about it, but I also need to make sure that the security and safety of the teams is the more important thing and not unduly push when things just aren't ready." Spencer's spoken to IGN previously about this issue, and made clear that a game delay – even to a flagship launch title like Halo: Infinite – would be extremely unlikely to delay the launch of the Series X itself.

Though set in two bygone eras, Back To The Future is timeless blockbuster fun

3 years 11 months ago

How many episodes do you want Final Fantasy VII Remake to be?

3 years 11 months ago

Thanks to the recent Ultimania book for Final Fantasy VII Remake, we're learning just how much of a little stinker director Tetsuya Nomura can be.

Amid statements that he "can't tell us what the second meaning behind the 'Remake' title is just yet." he and producer Yoshinori Kitase recently commented vaguely on the future of the Remake project: both from a philosophical and practical perspective. While Kitaste maintains that they are keeping with the core story of the original, Nomura notes that the game "might be broken into shorter stories" so they can release it quicker.

The reality is that we just don't know how many episodes this thing is going to be in the end. The question is: how many episodes do you want it to be?

Ubisoft extends its free to keep offer for Assassin's Creed II, Child of Light, Rayman Legends

3 years 11 months ago

In case you haven't noticed, Ubisoft has been running "free to keep" offers during the quarantine, starting with Child of Light, then extending into Rayman Legends and Assassin's Creed II.

If you click on all three of those links, you'll see that each announcement was covered by a different writer: that's how big of an impact they all had on various staff here at Destructoid. Wait, you missed the promo entirely? Well that's why I'm posting about it today!

Ubisoft just announced this morning that they are extending the offer for the trio through May 5. As usual, the "free to keep" offer only extends to the PC and is linked through their Uplay system. As a reminder, the whole initiative is called "Play Your Part," and was started "to support people staying at home by providing opportunities to have fun as they practice social distancing."

Again, all three of those games are worth playing, even in 2020. Although you probably have no shortage of things to do right now (maybe?), you may as well grab them all, even if you have no intention of playing them right now. Remember, it's for keeps!

This might be the most savage Zelda: Breath of the Wild beatdown I've seen yet

3 years 11 months ago

Any excuse to still talk about Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

A lot of folks are actually picking it up for the first time in the quarantine, which has led to all sorts of new clips and discoveries. While the below video from Reddit user pasunen probably isn't a new player experience, it's one of myriad new activities worth sharing.

Simply titled "Guardian kill," Link rolls up to one of the game's biggest baddies like a boss, then instantly starts rocking it with a white suit. The perfect boomerang aim is the best (it comes back at the end!), as is the systematic dismembering of limbs. It's very short (clocking in at 20 seconds), but you'll probably watch it multiple times just to appreciate all the levels of carnage. If you dig this video, here's a killer action montage, a clip where someone takes on a small army of enemies and wrecks them and a badass motorcycle fight.

I sincerely remember how it felt to walk across these great plains for the first time, and the utter terror that washed over me when I tangled with my first Guardian: I ran for the hills like my life depended on it. But I also recall the moment where I basically turned into the Link you see before you, ready to confidently take on the menace that plagued Hyrule.

3 years 11 months ago

Today Aniplex released free demos on Steam for both of the upcoming visual novels it’s publishing, ATRI: My Dear Moments and Adabana Odd Tales.

Both visual novels will be published by the company’s brand new Aniplex.exe brand, and they’ll mark its debut in the visual novel market.

The demo of ATRI: My Dear Moments can be found here, while Adabana Odd Tales can be found here.

Unfortunately, the latter appears to be still geoblocked in Europe, while the former is accessible everywhere.

Both games will fully release in June, including support for English text out of the box.

If you’re interested in ATRI: My Dear Moments, here’s an official description. The game is developed by Frontwing and Makura.

“In the near future, a sudden and unexplained sea rise has left much of human civilization underwater.
Ikaruga Natsuki, a boy who lost his mother and his leg in an accident some years earlier, returns disillusioned from a harsh life in the big city to find his old countryside home half-swallowed by the sea.

Left without a family, all he has to his name is the ship and submarine left to him by his oceanologist grandmother, and her debts.

His only hope to restore the dreams for the future that he has lost is to take up an opportunity presented to him by the suspicious debt collector Catherine. They set sail to search the sunken ruins of his grandmother’s laboratory in order to find a treasure rumor says she left there.

GTA Online is giving players free cash – enough to buy an alien suit

3 years 11 months ago

Play GTA Online any time during May and Rockstar will wang you $500,000 of in-game cash within a few days. While that’s not a huge amount of money on the scale of things, but it’s a decent chunk for doing nothing. It won’t buy you a new business or a top-end car but could help you save up. Or… you could use that free cash to buy an expensive alien bodysuit and join the delightfully daft alien beatdown gangs and green alien vs. purple alien wars that are raging across Los Santos this week.

Sea Of Thieves has a dedicated photography subreddit and it's really lovely

3 years 11 months ago

So often I find myself caught staring at the gorgeous land and sea-scapes of Sea Of Thieves. The views in this game really catch you off guard – sometimes it’s a sunset peaking over the waves after you’ve just emerged from the hull of your ship, others it’s the moody sky reflecting off the water as a finally storm passes. If you find yourself grabbing a screenshot of these magical moments, I encourage you to share it on one of my favourite little internet haunts, the Sea Of Photography subreddit.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time admiring everyone’s images there recently. I don’t always have time to jump into a game and see these views for myself, and I miss just sitting by the real-life ocean a lot, so it’s a nice compromise. So join me on a little photography exhibition, showing off some of my favourite snaps.

Gun Jam is basically a crossover between Doom and DDR

3 years 11 months ago

Last month, you may have spotted a short clip of a rhythm-FPS during your Twitter travels, which went viral after developer Dan Da Rocha decided to share the team's progress. Given it racked up over 15k likes, I think it's safe to say it struck a chord with viewers: and it's now being made into a fully-fledged game called Gun Jam.

The rhythm-FPS, which is being developed by Jaw Drop Games (known for the QUBE games), requires players to shoot on the beat - as indicated by a Dance Dance Revolution-style stream of diamonds in the centre. It's a pretty unique core mechanic, and provides the player with a clear visual for nailing the timing.

"We finally decided to reveal what we had in the making and I was properly blown away with the amazing response that followed," Da Rocha said in a press release. "The core mechanics definitely have their challenges but I'm proud of the team for pulling together and problem-solving to achieve the vision."
