Dirt 5 Hands-On: Dirt Isn't Just About Rally Racing Anymore

3 years 9 months ago

It must be tough iterating on an established formula, especially in racing games. Across the spectrum of styles within the genre, from Need For Speed Underground to Gran Turismo and Forza Horizon somewhere in between, I've loved but also felt burnout to some degree. Rally racing is one area I hadn't experienced much until Dirt 4, but having known about where the series has come from, Dirt 5 noticeably takes a turn in a different direction.

I got hands-on with a preview build of Dirt 5 on PC, which features four tracks for brief circuit races with a handful of cars to select. One track mixes street and off-road racing, two are purely muddy off-road endeavors, and one is a hectic drifting loop with sprint cars. It's quite a small piece of the game, but it's immediately clear that--based on the demo--the emphasis is no longer on keenly following a co-driver's course instructions in a time attack. The game is trying to tap into the excitement of head-to-head competitive racing with a bit of attitude.

Xbox Series X Price: Phil Spencer Says Xbox All Access Program Will Be "Critical" For Next-Gen

3 years 9 months ago

While Microsoft has yet to announce the price point for the Xbox Series X, it's expected to be an expensive console as most new machines are. To help the system reach the widest possible audience, Microsoft will be pushing its mobile phone-style Xbox All Access program for it.

Under this program, people can get an Xbox Series X with no cost upfront and pay it off over the course of two years. This is a common business practice in the world of smartphones, but it's new for console. Microsoft has been trialling the program since the Xbox 360 days. However, the Xbox Series X launch will mark Microsoft's biggest push yet in that regard, Spencer said.

"Xbox All Access is going to be critical to both our launch for Xbox Series X as well as just the overall generation," Spencer said during a GameLab speech, as reported by GI.biz.

The Last Us Part 2 Ending Explained - Here's What Happened And Why

3 years 9 months ago

Warning: This post obviously contains massive spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2. If you're not finished yet, we recommend you turn back now.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a story about obsession, anguish, trauma, and vengeance. It centers on the inability of some of its characters to let go of their pain, and the massive harm they do to themselves and others as a result.

But even though the revenge aspect of The Last of Us Part 2 is pretty straightforward, its structure is anything but. The game uses multiple flashbacks to alter your perception of characters and events as they unfold. Which people know what information, and at what time, changes how The Last of Us 2 wants you to see and interpret its characters. Most of the twists in the story are flashbacks that work to change your perception of the characters when given new context.

RPG Biomutant Is Almost Done, Dev Says

3 years 9 months ago

Developer Experiment 101 showed off new Biomutant gameplay and provided an update on its development.

In an interview with IGN, creative director Stefan Ljungqvist went in-detail about some elements players can expect in Biomutant. Ljungqvist talked about the gigantic bosses and how they play pivotal roles in the game's story, how the morphing character creator affects stats, the necessity of crafting the necessary gear to traverse the various biomes, and more. The entire interview was punctuated by bits and pieces of new gameplay, illustrating the scope of Biomutant's world as we see expansive fields, deep waters, and everything in between.

Throughout the interview, Ljungqvist said Biomutant was the biggest game he had ever worked on, mentioning the game's massive size on several occasions while disclosing that Biomutant is almost done. "We are at the end phase of development," Ljungqvist said. "When you asked me at the beginning 'what we've been doing,' we've been doing the same thing. In a massive game like this--and it's very big, like I said, the largest game I ever worked on--you will have issues. You will have technical challenges to overcome--and artistic too--but at this stage [of the project], it's more like cleaning out. You know, we're squashing bugs."

Pokemon Urshifu Guide: How To Evolve Kubfu And Which Evolution Is Better

3 years 9 months ago

The centerpiece of Pokemon Sword and Shield's Isle of Armor expansion is a new storyline that centers around Kubfu, a brand-new Legendary Pokemon that you'll receive after you complete all three of the Master Dojo's trials. Unlike most other Legendary Pokemon, Kubfu is actually able to evolve, and its evolution, Urshifu, can take one of two forms: Single Strike or Rapid Strike.

However, evolving Kubfu is a bit more involved than it may initially seem, and Urshifu's two possible forms each have their own strengths and drawbacks. To help you decide which one to choose, we've put together this guide explaining how to evolve Kubfu and how its two evolutions compare. Isle of Armor story spoilers follow.

How To Evolve Kubfu

After you complete the Master Dojo's three trials, Mustard will gift you the Legendary Pokemon Kubfu. To evolve it, you'll need to challenge one of the Towers of Two Fists, but before you can do that, you'll need to increase your friendship with Kubfu. Fortunately, this is much simpler than the usual methods of improving friendship with your Pokemon.

Surgeon Simulator 2 will take the first game's brutally amusing cartoon operations, and add a much wider game around it - from larger, more varied levels, to 4-player co-op, to customisation, and even an entire level creation suite. In a game overview video revealed at IGN Expo today, we got a first look at the sequel's many additions, all set in the new Bossa Labs medical facility, a varied set of areas to unlock, featuring new items like the Anatomy Vendor, multiple new tools to operate with, and dozens of physics-enabled objects to accidentally knock over. Check out the gameplay video below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/surgeon-simulator-2-exclusive-gameplay-overview-trailer"] The video also introduces the game's four characters, Penny, Kamal, Heather and Milo, all of whom can be used in 4-player co-op, and can be customised with new costumes and a variety of finger ornaments. We also got a look at the Bossa Labs Creation Mode, which opens up the streamlined level creation tools used by the developers themselves. Level designs can run from medical, to sci-fi, to fantasy, and can be uploaded for other players to try. Pre-ordering the standard version of  the game on Epic Games Store will open up closed beta access and an exclusive Mad Scientist costume, with the Deluxe Edition offering more on top of that. There's more to see from today's IGN Expo, and we're running the Summer of Gaming throughout June – here's the Summer of Gaming full schedule. Crystal Dynamics shows off fresh Marvel's Avengers gameplay in latest livestream

3 years 9 months ago

Square Enix has offered up new details and a fresh helping of previously unseen gameplay for the Crystal-Dynamics-developed Marvel's Avengers, which is scheduled to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and next-gen consoles later this year.

To begin its latest half-hour livestream, Crystal Dynamics shared a brand-new story trailer, mostly covering the key points we've already heard before. To recap, the Avengers have disbanded following the catastrophic events of the so-called A-Day, which unleashed a deadly disease on humanity. In their absence, a new organisation - Advanced Idea Mechanics (or AIM for short) - establishes itself, and events pick up five years later as Avengers fangirl and playable character Kamala Khan enters the scene.

Thanks to today's stream, however, we now know exactly who's behind AIM - and it's a villain many Marvel fans will recognise: Dr. George Tarleton, otherwise known as M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), who first entered the Marvel comic universe back in October 1967. M.O.D.O.K. is able to control machines with his mind - not ideal given that, post-A Day, AIM has flooded the streets with robotic AI.

What the Mainline Pokemon Series Can Learn From the Sonic Games

3 years 9 months ago

I’ve played nearly every Pokemon game in existence, and have hundreds of hours in every mainline Pokemon game with the exception of only Sword and Shield. Yes, Sword and Shield marked a big jump in graphical quality compared to previous games, but this transition wasn’t without sacrifice. Hundreds of Pokemon have been left behind and are not catchable in Sword and Shield.

This isn’t yet another article complaining about not being able to catch ’em all in Sword and Shield I promise, we’re past that. I’m just bringing it up to point out the fact that Sword and Shield marks the beginning of an awkward phase for the Pokemon series.

It appears that Game Freak can no longer be as ambitious as they want about how many Pokemon are in the game, their animations, or the scope of the game world, if they want to maintain a steady escalation of graphical quality that meets the expectations of owners of the latest hardware.

Game Freak is trying to strike a balance between hanging onto the classic gameplay while also trying to push the series further from a technical stand point as much as they can, and they are starting to reach a point of diminishing returns.

The dream of having this massively ambitious Pokemon game that has all of the Pocket Monsters, all of the regions, beautiful animations and more just doesn’t seem like it could ever be real right now.

This reality stings even more after seeing what Pokemon could look like if it had a more focused scope in the recently revealed New Pokemon Snap game.
