Pokemon Unite Reveal Becomes The Pokemon Company's Most Disliked Video on YouTube

3 years 9 months ago
Yesterday's Pokemon Unite presentation has quickly become The Pokemon Company's most disliked video on YouTube, ever. Yesterday's Pokemon Presents broadcast has accrued over 170,000 dislikes in under 24 hours (as noted by Nintendo Life), a strong response from fans after the hotly anticipated reveal turned out to be a MOBA-like where you play as teams of Pokemon, earning abilities and vying for control of a top-down battlefield. In a further showing of community reaction to the new game, the channel's second most disliked video is the standalone trailer for the game, with over 55,000 dislikes. Both videos have seen their dislikes far outstrip the likes given.  While not a solid measurement of overall fan reaction to the game, it's very clear that Unite's announcement has been a controversial one. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/pokemon-unite-full-gameplay-presentation"] Many were expecting something more conventional from the presentation, which was announced last week following the reveal of New Pokemon Snap, which is coming to the Nintendo Switch. At the time, many believed that Pokemon President Tsunekazu Ishihara was teasing a Johto-set follow-up to Pokemon Let's Go after internet sleuths caught a line-up of suspicious plush 'mons in the cabinet behind Ishihara when he first teased yesterday's conference. Pokemon Unite, a "strategic team-based battle game", arrives thanks to a collaboration between The Pokemon Company and Tencent's TiMi Studios, which previously worked on Call of Duty: Mobile and Arena of Valor.

Watch Blindboy improvise songs as he taunts the people of Red Dead Redemption 2

3 years 9 months ago

You might know Blindboy as “that Irish guy from the Rubberbandits who wears a bag on his head”, because he is, but he’s also so much more. He’s a podcaster, author and musician, and Alice Bee is well into him. She’s on holiday, though, which means I get to show off his recent adventures in Red Dead Redemption 2. Please treat yourself to the following 90-minute Twitch stream of Blindboy riding around while improvising suspiciously good songs about what he sees – or at least watch the five-minute compilation. It gave me belly laughs.

Twitch Prime's July freebies include Turok 2 and Dear Esther

3 years 9 months ago

Twitch Prime continues to dole out monthly rewards, and July's offerings have just come across our desk.

The highlight of the month is easily the new batch of free SNK classics, a list that now fully includes (with the July additions): SNK Collection 1: Art of Fighting 2, Blazing Star, Fatal Fury Special, The King of Fighters 2000, The King of Fighters 2002, Pulstar and Samurai Shodown II.

The new Doom Eternal drop includes the "Cosplay Slayer skin," which is literally just the Doom Slayer dressed up in cardboard like he was going to a gaming convention. It lines up nicely with the old school shooter Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, which is also free. Other July free games are Dear Esther, GRIP: Combat Racing, KUNAI and Dark Devotion.

You can find the full list below, which includes all drops (free games or DLC) and dates.

Pride Week: Towards more speculative sex

3 years 9 months ago

Hello! All this week we'll be celebrating Pride and the power of positive representations in games. Every day we'll be bringing you stories and insights from different parts of the LGBT+ community. You can also help support Pride with Eurogamer's newly redesigned t-shirt - all profits from which will be going to charity.

In 2015, the Wachowski sisters asked a very important question via their sci-fi TV show Sense8: If eight people were psychically connected to share each other's senses, how would they have sex?

The answer - enthusiastically and at a distance - notwithstanding, the question itself proves important. By asking it, the Wachowskis applied a fundamental lens of speculative fiction - a view towards questioning what is, can be, or will be possible - to sex.

Amazon have slashed up to $500 off four premium gaming laptops

3 years 9 months ago

Everyone loves a good load of [cms-block], but there is a limit to what you can get when you only have a maximum of £1000 / $1000 to spend. Thankfully, Amazon US have just slashed the prices of three big name gaming laptops from Razer, Acer, Gigabyte and Asus to bring them down much closer to that four-figure grand mark. Normally, these laptops would set you back around $1500 give or take a few hundred dollars, making it a great time to snap one up if you’re in the market for taking your games on the go.

Beyond a Steel Sky launches tomorrow on Apple Arcade, next month on Steam

3 years 9 months ago

In a surprise bit of news, Revolution Software has announced that its old-school adventure sequel Beyond a Steel Sky is now good to go, and will launch on the Apple Arcade platform tomorrow, June 26. The sci-fi cyberpunk thriller will arrive on PC via Steam sometime in July.

A sequel to the 1994 DOS title Beneath a Steel Sky, Beyond welcomes back weary protagonist Robert Foster, who is forced to leave his desert encampment and return to the walled-off metropolis of Union City on a mission to recover an abducted child. While the old 'berg looks far more pleasing and luxurious than one might remember, it quickly becomes clear that corruption and danger still lurk behind the utopia's bright lights and starry-eyed promises.

Halo Infinite teaser confirms the bad guys from Halo Wars 2 are back

3 years 9 months ago

343 released a teaser for upcoming Xbox Series X launch title Halo Infinite that confirms the return of a popular villain.

The teaser, below, features a low voice from someone who says "we are The Banished".

The Banished are back for Halo Infinite, then. But who are they? They're the bad guys from real-time strategy spin-off Halo Wars 2, a group of aliens made up of familiar Covenant races (brutes, hunters, elites etc) who ditched the Prophets (don't blame them) and that whole Great Journey thing Master Chief got caught up in.

Hearthstone's Felfire event is like Fury Road with devils, and it's great fun

3 years 9 months ago

hearthstone trial by felfire 1

It seems it’s a summer for demons and big metal vehicles. First, Monster Train steamed into the hearts of digital card game aficionados with its tale of high-speed satans, and now good old Hearthstone is at it as well. While its new Felfire Festival event can’t technically be called an expansion as it doesn’t come with a new set of cards, it’s seen a new faction of pirates added to Hearthstone’s autobattler mode, a bunch of new tavern brawls, a 21-mission solo campaign, and – coming later today – a series of PvE deckbuilding challenges pitting you against some classic gits off of World Of Warcraft.

Oh, and of course one of Blizzard’s delightfully cheesy animated music videos, featuring Mecha-Jaraxxus (a sort of cyborg devil, and the baddie from the new solo campaign) giving it a bit of Immortan Joe with his Rusted Legion. With loads of new stuff to do (all of it being entirely free, and none of it buggering up the game’s meta with overpowered cards), I have to say I actually prefer it to recent full-scale Hearthstone expansions.

Fortnite will show Inception free in its virtual cinema on Friday

3 years 9 months ago

When Epic announced plans to show a full Christoper Nolan film on Fortnite‘s in-game cinema screens, I guessed it was probably Inception or maybe Batman. Turns out, it’s both – or even The Prestige instead. Interestingly/frustratingly, the film that’ll be screened free on Friday varies by country due to rights issues and local laws. So the UK gets The Prestige, the USA gets Inception, France gets Batman Begins, and so on. But if you want to watch The Prestige while people dressed as Batman and megastreamer “Ninja” floss on you, it’s time to get the popcorn in.

Biomutant shares 10-minute gameplay montage, development entering endgame

3 years 9 months ago

Developer Experiment 101 continues to plug away at its dystopian adventure Biomutant, which has been quietly in development since its initial reveal back in the summer of 2017. Now entering the final phases of production, publisher THQ Nordic has released a 10-minute video giving us all a look at the epic adventure in action.

As a quick refresher, Biomutant is the tale of a post-apocalyptic world populated by anthropomorphic animals. Players take control of a fully customisable raccoon character, who is tasked with rescuing The Tree of Life, which is slowly dying due to the failing ecosystem. Exploring a vast open world, players will encounter a wide cast of characters and localised tribes and must attempt, by favour or force, to gain access to the roots of the tree itself, embedded deep within each territory.

Dialogue choices, actions, and reactions will affect a "Karma" system which forms the spine of the adventure, having major impact on both the player character and the denizens that they encounter. On a physical front, Biomutant will feature constant customisation and adaptation options, as the hero alters their very being with new skills, abilities, and weapons as the story progresses.

TGS is going online this year, here is the plan

3 years 9 months ago

In case you forgot; TGS is much, much bigger than E3. How big? Well try 262,076 attendees in 2019 versus E3's 66,100 figure from the same year. This is with E3's public entrance policy.

It's so big, in fact, that it won't be going on hiatus entirely, despite the lack of a physical show. As a past TGS attendee Destructoid has obtained information directly from the show's organizers, which now involves an elaborate combination of streams and behind-the-scenes events, taking place from September 23 to September 27.

Right now, TGS organizers are gathering up publishers for the show, with Nintendo and Sony are already onboard with a specific focus in indie games. A "live streaming of an esports tournament" is vaguely mentioned, as well as "online round-table discussions" hosted by TGS.

So how does this impact you? Well there's going to be behind-the-scenes events that press will share at a later time, as well as the open invitation to have games at the event host their own streams. So mark off your calendar folks: the summer of gaming has expanded into the fall!

Ape Escape 20th Anniversary Twitter account abruptly shuts down

3 years 9 months ago

If there's nothing I dislike more, it's being the bearer of bad news. But I'm sorry to inform fans that the Ape Escape 20th Anniversary Twitter account has abruptly closed down, with a strange message hinting that perhaps a project was initially in the works, but has since been canned.

As spotted by Push Square, the Twitter account - which opened with bright eyes and big dreams back in June 2019 - released a series of somewhat cryptic tweets on June 23. These included images of an Ape Escape monkey leaving an office and returning to the jungle along with a message that, roughly translated, reads "There are things that I could and couldn't do in the last year, but I have some regrets."

While purely speculation, this seems to imply that perhaps an Ape Escape project was on the cards to celebrate the platformer's 20th anniversary, but undisclosed circumstances have brought an end to any such plans. Ape Escape is a beloved franchise with a dedicated fan following, so this news will no doubt come as a disappointment to many. Still, here's hoping that this is more a case of "See you soon," rather than "Goodbye."

Dr. Mario World Reintroduces Everyone To Baby Wario

3 years 9 months ago
Dr. Mario World

While Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, and even Baby Rosalina have appeared recently in games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart World Tour, Baby Wario has been left in the dust since his sole appearance in 2006's Yoshi's Island DS. Now, the developers behind Dr. Mario World have announced that Baby Wario is back in the spotlight in the form of Dr. Baby Wario to kick off Season 3 of the mobile puzzle game.

Season 3 of Dr. Mario World will let players advance to tier 9 at 3,600 battle points, at which point Whomp King will appear in battle boxes. In addition, new stages will be added. Despite this, the main attraction is obviously Dr. Baby Wario ... he's an attraction and not a deterrent, right? I can't tell.

Regardless of if you think Baby Wario is adorable or an abomination, Season 3 of Dr. Mario World begins on June 26. For more on the game, check out our review.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers for PS4 & Nintendo Switch Reveals its Gameplay in First Trailer

3 years 9 months ago

Today D3 Publisher released the first trailer of its newly revealed game Earth Defense Force: World Brothers.

The game was revealed yesterday with a 2020 release window for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, and today we get to see it in action for the first time.

While the graphics are very different compared to the usual (and usually pretty rough, in a somewhat endearing way) Earth Defense Force fare, the gameplay itself doesn’t seem to betray its roots too much.

Of course, the voxel-style visuals make this a rather peculiar entry in the EDF series.

You can check it out below, also including a tease of the definitely more traditional Earth Defense Force 6, which still doesn’t have any platform announced, but we know is coming in 2021.

If you want to read more about the Earth Defense Force franchise, you can check out our review of Iron Rain, keeping in mind that it wasn’t an official mainline game of the series, but a spinoff focusing mostly on charming the western audience.

Xbox Exec Phil Spencer Speaks About "Hardware Advantages" Over PS5

Xbox executive Phil Spencer has commented on Sony's recent PlayStation 5 showcase, stating that the competitor did a "good job," while also acknowledging that the Xbox Series X has "hardware advantages" over Sony's next-generation console.

"As a competitor, it's great to have them out there now so we kind of know what the program is, we see the device, we see the games," Spencer said during the recent GameLab event, as reported by VideoGamesChronicle.

Spencer says he "felt good" after watching the PS5 event because he thinks Microsoft's own Xbox Series X stacks up well against Sony's machine.

Dr. Mario World Introduces Dr Baby Wario, And We're Not Sure If He's Cute Or Not

3 years 9 months ago

Dr. Mario World, the mobile spin-off of Nintendo's puzzle series, has debuted a new character, and it's a curious one. From June 26 at 3 AM PT, Dr Baby Wario will arrive in the game, and will be available to use as a character.

The little guy, pictured in the tweet below, might or might not be cute depending on whether or not you can deal with his two enormous walls of teeth.

Baby Wario previously appeared in Yoshi's Island DS, and in the 14 years since he has seemingly earned a medical degree. While his incarnation in that game wore just a diaper, this time he's fully dressed with a doctor's coat and tie. They grow up so fast.

Skate 4 Could Bring Back User-Created Content

3 years 9 months ago

Skate 4 is finally in the works, and while we're yet to see any gameplay footage, we've got some minor insights into what it might look like. While current EA job ads don't show much, EA CEO Andrew Wilson recently talked about the game in an EA fireside chat, and it's given us a few things to work with.

Wilson talked about how enthusiastic people were for a new Skate, and dropped some hints at features the game might contain. He said that while skateboarding "in and of itself has tremendous appeal to a huge, global audience," Skate will also tap into a "trend that’s happening inside our industry around user-generated content, open-world, and interaction."

Reflecting on skateboard culture, and how much art and fashion tie into it, Wilson said that while skating itself was a "starting point" there's more to it than that. "You start to build in user-generated content, exploration, and community on top of that and that expands the opportunity exponentially," he said.

Fallout 76's Poor Reception Is Why Doom Eternal Was Delayed For More Polish, Bethesda Says

3 years 9 months ago

Doom Eternal released on March 19 to critical acclaim (including an 8/10 from GameSpot), but it was originally scheduled to release in November 2019. The game was delayed to ensure a certain level of quality, and now, thanks to a new podcast interview with Pete Hines, Bethesda's senior vice president of global marketing and communications, we know why.

Talking to USGamer for the site's Branching Narratives podcast, Hines has reflected on the reception Fallout 76 received at launch, and how that influenced the development and release of Doom Eternal, as well as the Fallout 76 Wastelanders expansion.

"We said, 'These are not ready, and we're not going to make another mistake, and we're going to take the extra time even though that time hurts, and is painful, and you miss a holiday,'" Hines reflects.

Fortnite To Host Movie Nite with 3 Christopher Nolan Films

3 years 9 months ago

Fortnite has announced on the Epic Games blog Wednesday that they will be hosting Movie Nite at Party Royale’s Big Screen with limited screenings of one of three Christopher Nolan films this Friday night — either Batman Begins, Inception or The Prestige.

It would be great to watch a triple feature, but the Fortnite development team said that due to film distribution rights, whichever Nolan classic flick players will be able to watch during Movie Nite depends on the country they live in.

According to local listings, for example, players living in the United States, Colombia, Haiti, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yemen will be able to watch Inception. Those living in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom will see The Prestige. Players in Bangladesh, Brazil, Bhutan, Chile, France and Sri Lanka will catch the first Dark Knight film Batman Begins.
