Grab our favourite 1TB SSD for £90 with this early Black Friday deal

3 years 5 months ago

A photo of the WD Blue SN550

As the early [cms-block] deals onslaught continues, one discount that particularly caught my eye as I was browsing through Ebuyer’s fresh batch of early bird Black Friday deals today was my much-beloved 1TB WD Blue SN550 SSD, which is now down to £90. While not quite as tantalising as its fleeting Prime Day low of just £85, it’s been several weeks since this excellent 1TB NVMe drive was this cheap, as it’s been at least £95 or above for the last couple of months.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon review

3 years 5 months ago

A screenshot of Yakuza: Like A Dragon's protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, grinning as he's tossed in the air by four men in business suits.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon

is a big stretch. Not in a “you’ve taken it too far, buddy” sort of way, I mean I can quite literally feel the click of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s bones as they extend their arms to the sky and heave their collective sighs of satisfaction – finally, a fresh start.

They’ve taken this opportunity to strip all the best bits from Yakuza’s creaking action adventure foundations, and build something with renewed focus. If, before, the series had flirted with committing to the role-playing genre, Like A Dragon is down on one knee proposing to the JRPG with happy tears in its eyes. And this relationship works, alright. Oh yes it does.

Learn About NBA 2K21's New All-Encompassing Franchise Mode Called MyNBA

3 years 5 months ago

With new consoles just around the corner, 2K Games and Visual Concepts are unveiling tons of features for the NBA 2K21 PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Today, a new Courtside Report introduced a new all-encompassing mode called MyNBA, which combines MyGM, MyLeague, and MyLeague Online. Yes, the franchise mode is being rebranded for the new generation, but it doesn't mean you're losing anything.

"At its core, the name pretty much says it all – it’s your NBA, it’s your franchise mode, however you want to set it up," explained senior producer Dave Zdyrko in the latest Courtside Report. "The mode has every single feature that you know and love from the previous modes, all rolled up into one where you have full control over which ones you want to turn on and off."

That's right, it's up to you how deep you want to go into the mode. When you boot it up, you get several easy-to-select options to determine how you want your franchise experience to play out. You can select from the following: Fantasy Draft, Customize League Rules, Custom Roster, Customize League, Customize Salary Cap, Customize Simple Settings, and Customize Advanced Settings.

Review: Astro's Playroom

3 years 5 months ago

We've gotten to the point where Astro Bot is now a series and I am here for it.

The little Sony mascot that could originally starred in 2013's Playroom, before it catapulted into stardom with Astro Bot Rescue Mission: a fully-fledged platformer for PSVR. Now it's out of the VR realm and ready for action once again as, in part, a taster for a new piece of tech.

We should've seen it coming: The Medium delayed into 2021

3 years 5 months ago

What crummy fortunetellers and soothsayers we are. We couldn't even predict The Medium's delay before it happened.

The Xbox Series X launch-window lineup took a not-insignificant hit as Bloober Team's new horror game The Medium got pushed back into early 2021. Originally scheduled for December 10, 2020, it has been delayed until January 28, 2021. That's a seven-week setback.

PT Reportedly Has PS5 Backwards Compatibility Removed By Konami Before Release

3 years 5 months ago
After hope for backwards compatibility, PT appears not to work on PS5 through any means. But strangely, it seems that hasn't always been the case, with Konami reportedly removing compatibility ahead of the new console's launch. As reported by Polygon, the now-iconic horror game teaser for Silent Hills was seemingly playable on PS5 using a file transfer in October. However, after an update, the game can no longer be played on the new console - something IGN Japan has confirmed. Polygon reports that, when contacted for comment, Sony said the change was a "publisher decision", meaning Konami would have specifically blocked the game from being played on new hardware (and effectively making it even harder for the game to be preserved, after it was made non-downloadable on the PS Store). [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/25/how-pt-became-a-modern-urban-legend"] Interestingly, Konami told us in October that it was "testing" its PS4 games for backwards compatibility, and couldn't confirm whether PT would work. We did however know that it would not be downloadable from the PS5 store, even if already owned. We've contacted the publisher for comment. In a long, strange history, this is yet another odd turn in the tale for PT.

Preview: Empire Of Sin is a seamless blend of four different gangster games

3 years 5 months ago

A well-dressed man with an astonishing moustache sits in a dimly-lit room; he is, I suspect, an emperor of sin.

There are two, pretty obvious, factors by which I judge strategy games: how immediately satisfying they are to play, and how well that satisfaction holds up in the long run. Success in the first respect is often a trade-off for success in the second, as the things that dazzle on day one become dulled by the cumulative effect of small design problems. It’s hard, then, to take the measure of a big ol’ strategy game during a limited preview play session.

But after just a day with it, I have high hopes that Empire Of Sin, the extraordinary prohibition gangster simulation coming from Romero Games on December 1, is going to hit the big time on both fronts.

PS5, Xbox Series X and S review embargo bonanza. It's the Eurogamer next-gen news cast!

3 years 5 months ago

What a week! We've just had two big embargoes lifted: the PlayStation 5 review embargo, and the Xbox Series X and S review embargo. Oh yeah, and we've got review embargoes for Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Astro's Playroom. Finally, the gloves are off and we can talk freely about the next-generation!

That's exactly what Eurogamer news editor Tom Phillips, Eurogamer reporter Emma Kent and myself do in the video below, the fourth in our weekly next-gen news cast show. Emma talks about the Xbox Series S (her impressions are on the site now), Tom talks about the Xbox Series X (Digital Foundry's review is live now), and I discuss the PS5 (Digital Foundry's PS5 review is live now).

Meanwhile, we discuss Insomniac's PS5 launch title Spider-Man: Miles Morales (here's Martin's review), pack-in game Astro's Playroom (Martin again with the review), as well as all the rest of the week's next-gen news - including how you won't be able to queue up outside a shop to buy one of the fancy new consoles.

Wow, Konami actually killed P.T. on PS5

3 years 5 months ago

Konami has already gone to great lengths to scrub P.T. from existence, that much is well-documented. Following the cancelation of Silent Hills, P.T. was abruptly pulled from the PlayStation Store and unable to be downloaded ever again. The only way to play P.T. was to already have it on your PS4's hard drive.

Now, Konami has made sure the beloved playable teaser's ghosts remain in the past. After some will it/won't it discussion over P.T. living on through PS5 backward compatibility, it seems as though Konami has delivered the coup de grâce.

Polygon reports that P.T. can't be transferred from a PS4 to the PS5's SSD storage. Because of this, it's not supported through backward compatibility.

Here's what's weird though: Polygon also reports that P.T. worked on the PS5 at one point. In late October, Polygon did a data transfer and played P.T. from the beginning. It was perfectly playable. However, after a factory reset, the transfer couldn't be initiated again. The functionality was removed sometime in the few days leading up to this morning's PS5 review embargo.

Sony points the finger at Konami and calls this "a publisher's decision." Konami had told us in the past that P.T. wouldn't work on PS5, but the logic behind that statement seemed shaky. Konami said that P.T. wasn't PS5-compatible because you could no longer download it from the PlayStation Store. We had already known that. It seemed to reason that anyone who simply transferred the files would be all set.

EA Sports to Release 'Multiple New Franchises' in the Coming Years

3 years 5 months ago
EA says its Sports division plans to release "multiple new franchises in the years ahead", adding to its existing portfolio. In the latest EA financials, CEO Andrew Wilson discussed the continuing growth of its FIFA, NHL, Madden and UFC franchises, but added a brief mention of new series, saying, "We also have plans to add to our core EA SPORTS portfolio with multiple new franchises in the years ahead." Wilson didn't go into more detail about those mooted franchises. It may be that he means brand new sports games, more diverse versions of existing EA sports (college football or street soccer, for example), or returns to abandoned franchises –EA Sports has previously made golf, boxing, cricket, and snowboarding games, among others. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/fifa-21-review"] EA clearly has big plans for EA Sports in general, with Wilson explaining that the division will see a "significant expansion that will span new games, more geographies and more ways to engage." He adds that the compamny has "six new soccer mobile games in development for new genres and new markets," and points out that Ultimate Team modes have grown by 25% this year. While the division is clearly working for its parent company, EA Sports' approach to monetization and development iteration have become increasingly controversial in recent years. This year, we've bemoaned Madden 21's stagnant Franchise mode, and seen EA fined potentially millions of dollars for its loot box-like Ultimate Team packs in Europe. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales: The Kotaku Review

3 years 5 months ago

The title screen of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales hit me like a subway train. PS5's Activity Cards Explained: Our Pre-Launch Experience

3 years 5 months ago
One of PS5’s new UI features comes in the form of Activity Cards, a series of game-specific and more general panels available in the PS5’s Control Center. While we saw some specific-use cases in the PS5 UI reveal, we’ve now had a bit more hands-on time with them in multiple games, and can better explain how they work. Specifically, we can speak about using them in conjunction with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Astro’s Playroom. And of course, you can see more of the PS5’s UI in our full PS5 review. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/06/playstation-5-review"]

PS5 Overall Use

No matter what game we’ve played on PS5, some Activity Cards are a constant. A newsfeed card has been apparent whenever pulling up this feature. It has changed somewhat in our pre-launch experience - when Insomniac revealed new videos for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, for example, that took the prominent featured spot on the newsfeed card. As of right now, it’s unclear what other console-wide cards may be added in the future, but they do offer Sony a platform to directly flag any major updates to players, no matter what game they’re playing. Additionally, a recent media capture card has been present for me while using the PS5, letting me quickly access my previous screenshots and clips captured via the Share button. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ps5-ui-screenshots&captions=true"]

Astro’s Playroom Activities Cards

Diving into game-specific uses, Astro’s Playroom offers a bit more of a clear use case for future games. A host of game-specific cards will pop up while playing, based on recent use of Playroom, and I’ve seen both Trophy-specific cards and Level-focused ones featured most often. Playroom is split into four main worlds, each with four levels apiece.

What PS5's Create Button Actually Does

3 years 5 months ago
Of the many changes Sony’s new PS5 controller, the DualSense, brings with it is an alteration to the Share button on the DualShock 4, which has let us post clips of Fall Guys wins and Spider-Man photo mode pics for years. But what, if anything, does the Create button actually bring differently to the PlayStation experience? Well, now that we have had time with the PS5, we can share a bit more about what the new button actually does differently, and what has stayed the same. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/first-look-at-the-ps5-ui"] For all its newness, the Create Button actually brings up a rather understated UI - as opposed to the PS4’s Share UI that came in from the side, the Create button temporarily fills the bottom of your screen with a minimal black bar and a few icons. Far more quickly – and with no lag compared to the slow-moving PS4 UI – you're able to share your current screen as a screenshot, capture recent gameplay, or start a recording for future play. With the capture recent gameplay option, the PS5 has temporarily saved the last few minutes of play, and lets you clip out the last 15 seconds, the last 30 seconds, and more increments of time – all the way up to the last hour of gameplay. And of course, with the start recording option, the PS5 will then capture any subsequent gameplay. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ps5-ui-screenshots&captions=true"] When it comes to those capture options for video and photos, there are actually plenty of customization options directly available from the Create button share screen, which is arguably one of the best new features for the button.

Astro's Playroom PS5 Review

3 years 5 months ago
For a free game that comes with the PlayStation 5, one largely designed just to showcase all the bells and whistles of Sony’s next-gen DualSense controller, Astro’s Playroom is surprisingly fun. It’s not just a great toybox to experience the DualSense’s haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, microphone, and more, it also delivers the best proof-of-concept pack-in I’ve played since Wii Sports. This is a truly joyous homage to PlayStation history, as well as an experimental platformer I can only hope to see turned into a larger experience during the PS5’s lifetime. Developed by Team Asobi, Astro’s Playroom follows in the impressive footsteps of its excellent PSVR exclusive, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. Much like that adventure crafted its levels and challenges around the concept of viewing a platformer in VR, here Team Asobi has really considered what it means to build one around the DualSense. You could technically play these levels without any of the DualSense’s new functionality, but like its predecessor Playroom serves as a strong argument for just how immersive an experience can be when fully using this new technology. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=astros-playroom-ps5-screenshots&captions=true"] Astro’s literal Playroom is, amusingly, the “inside” of your PlayStation 5 console, with its CPU Plaza hub offering you gateways to four main worlds: Cooling Springs, GPU Jungle, Memory Meadows, and SSD Speedway.

PS5 UI Does Not Have Custom Themes

3 years 5 months ago
The PlayStation 5’s UI brings with it a host of changes that evolve what players experienced on the PS4, and while things like Trophies, Account Avatars photos, and more have made the transition, one notable piece of the PS4 UI has not made the next-gen leap - themes. Themes have played a big role in the life of the PS4 as a way of customizing the console’s UI. Both static and dynamic themes have been available by the hundreds for players to purchase or grab for free, some reskinning the icons to a game-specific look, or adding music from your favorite games to your PS4 hub. Other, more static themes just change the look, but still let players add an additional personal touch. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/ps5s-ui-the-5-biggest-gamechangers"] The PS5, as of our pre-launch experience, has no themes. IGN has reached out to Sony about the decision to not have themes for PS5, and whether it’s a feature the company is considering adding back in. We’ll update this story should they respond, but there’s at least one likely reason we aren’t seeing themes. For the most part, PS5’s UI takes an inverse approach to the PS4’s. Sony’s soon-to-be last-gen system largely put all its icons on display at once and made them the focal point of the UI. A host of games, apps, and settings icons are often shown all prominently on screen simultaneously. The PS5’s UI moves many of those features to the top of the screen, or even more directly in the pop-up Control Center menu, which acts as an overlay to the PS5. Instead, each PS5 game we’ve seen so far comes with its own mini-theme of sorts. Take Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which showcases a big piece of art for Miles in his Spidey suit while one of the game’s themes plays in the background. But if you switch over to Astro’s Playroom, a new piece of Astro art dominates the screen, with music from that game playing.

How Long Is Astro's Playroom for PS5?

3 years 5 months ago
Astro’s Playroom will be a free pack-in for PS5 owners, a chance to test out all the new functionality of the DualSense controller - and have something to play while bigger games and install and download. But given its pack-in nature, and PlayStation not really having as much of a precedent (PS4’s The Playroom was arguably more of a showcase for the additional PS4 camera, and was basically a collection of virtual toys), many may be wondering if Astro’s Playroom is a full game, a minigame suite, or something else. To help answer these questions, here is the experience of some of IGN’s staff about their time with Astro’s Playroom. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/06/astros-playroom-review"] [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jonathon Dornbush, Reviewer and Senior News Editor First off, I’m happy to confirm Astro’s Playroom is a full game, particularly because of one notable inclusion - a Platinum trophy. But whether you’re a trophy hunter, Astro’s Playroom is structured very much like a full game, albeit a relatively short one. I’ve 100%’d Astro’s Playroom, collecting everything in its four worlds, including hidden artifacts and more, and the experience took me roughly about 6 - 7 hours.

PS5 Has 667GB of Usable Storage Space

3 years 5 months ago
PlayStation 5 will allow for 667GB of usable storage space on its 825GB SSD. IGN can confirm that the console, when totally emptied (including having deleted pack-in game Astro's Playroom), offers 667GB, meaning 158GB is reserved for the operating system and essential files. With game sizes continuing to grow, that 667GB may not go too far - as an example, the PS5 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes up 135GB of SSD space alone (seemingly without installing Warzone). [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/06/playstation-5-review"] You will be able to expand the storage on a PS5 relatively easily by installing off-the-shelf NVMe drives, which can be plugged in by popping off the consoles' removable faceplates. By comparison, Xbox Series X offers 802GB of usable space (from a 1TB drive) and Xbox Series S offers 364GB (from a 512GB drive). By a very small margin, PS5 does offer the most efficient use of a solid state drive out of the next-gen consoles launching next week – 19.1% of its drive is untouchable, as opposed to 19.8% of Xbox Series X and 28.9% of Xbox Series S. PlayStation 5 Review

3 years 5 months ago

After a generation of figuratively towering above its rivals with the monstrously successful PlayStation 4, one thing is certain: Sony’s next-generation contender will also loom large over its peers... literally. This thing is massive. However, what the PlayStation 5 lacks in subtlety it more than makes up for in potential, thanks in part to its amazingly fast SSD but mostly to its truly remarkable new controller, the DualSense.

While a good deal of what folks are going to be able to squeeze out of 2020’s salvo of shiny new hardware may be bottlenecked to some degree by the screen that they own, the PS5’s unique DualSense democratises a next-gen gaming experience for all, delivering an amazing new level of haptic feedback that really needs to be felt to be believed.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/27/ps5-console-unboxing"]

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ps5-console-first-look-size-comparison&captions=true"]

Make no mistake: the austere and unceremonious nature of the box and packaging is in stark contrast to the PlayStation 5 itself, which is far and away the most flamboyant-looking console I’ve ever owned. Rather than a single shell, the PS5 appears to be made up of four separate pieces: a glossy, black case sandwiched between a pair of warped, matte-white plastic plates, with a detachable stand.

How Long Is Spider-Man: Miles Morales?

3 years 5 months ago

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales follows up Insomniac’s beloved PS4 exclusive with a new entry on PS4 and PS5 at launch. Only revealed earlier this year, there’s been some confusion and differing discussion around how big a game Miles Morales would be compared to the original, including comparisons to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, a shorter spin-off from the mainline Uncharted series.

But how long does it actually take to beat the game? We asked those on the IGN staff that have beaten the game for their experience with how long it took (and don’t worry, there won’t be any story spoilers!). Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 Review

3 years 5 months ago
Miles Morales may just be finding his footing as a superhero, but his first solo game proves developer Insomniac has comfortably hit its stride as it converts its stand-alone hit into a series. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a flashy starring debut for Miles, telling as engaging a story as the original Marvel’s Spider-Man while simultaneously improving upon pretty much every minor gripe I had with that already great game. It may be smaller overall, but every facet of it feels more essential: the incredible swinging mechanics, storytelling, and animation of Peter Parker’s adventure return, joined by meaningful updates to side missions, Miles’ flashy new moves, and the captivating spirit of New York City. While it can be played on PlayStation 4, this is a gorgeous introduction to the PlayStation 5. Miles Morales takes advantage of improved lighting and particle effects to make this former New Yorker achingly miss the city I once called home, and swinging feels even better at 60fps than at 30. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/06/the-first-22-minutes-of-spider-man-miles-morales-on-ps5"] Marvel’s Spider-Man established Miles’ role alongside Peter Parker, and this solo outing makes it clear just how much room there is in Manhattan for multiple Spider-Men to shine. Actor Nadji Jeter returns to the title role and gives the newly heroic Miles a sincerity, heart, and excitement that stands tall alongside other depictions out there – from the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse animated movie, to the original Brian Michael Bendis/Sara Pichelli comic run, and the ongoing Saladin Ahmed comic arc.
