3 years 1 month ago

Crusader Kings III has always had poetry—some romance paths would even adjust the quality depending on the skill of your pursuer—but the game is about to go all in on it, adding it as a character trait and even creating a generator that will write your ruler’s musings for you.

Valheim Succeeds By Not Starving You

3 years 1 month ago

Valheim's record-breaking success isn't too surprising, even if you ignore outside elements like the current global pandemic and the game's relatively low price point. There's an obvious appetite for survival games on PC, as evidenced by the likes of Rust and Ark: Survival Evolved consistently butting heads on Steam's most-played list. Yet Valheim also appeals to people like me, who aren't particularly fond of the genre. There are a number of reasons for this, but chief among them is the fact that Valheim plays down all of the restrictive survival aspects that form the foundations of similar games.

The first structure my friends and I built in Valheim has now become known as our home base. In keeping with the game's viking theme, it's vaguely reminiscent of a Norse longhouse, complete with mead and a dining table. Colourful banners and trophies of the monsters we've slain adorn its wooden walls, and the outside courtyard features a smelter for refining precious ores and a kiln for producing the coal that powers it. Each person has their own bedroom with a place to sleep and chests to store their valuables, and there are also communal chests for everyone to contribute various resources like food, wood, and stone. Meanwhile, the house's defenses consist of a spiked fence encircling the entire property and an improvised moat that's proven surprisingly effective at keeping monsters at bay.

New Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Update Is Live, Balances Zombies' Outbreak Mode

3 years 1 month ago

Treyarch Studios has released the full patch notes for the latest update for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The update is currently live--it's primarily geared towards implementing bug fixes and objective tuning to Zombies.

The update focuses on Zombies' new Outbreak mode, which is an open-world, co-op variation of Call of Duty's traditional Zombies. Instead of fighting off hordes of zombies in a series of rounds, Outbreak tasks a team of players with accomplishing a series of objectives in any order they wish across a vast open space that's filled with zombies.

Also in the patch notes, Treyarch details what players can expect in Rapid Fire Moshpit and Dead Ops Arcade: First Person, both of which are scheduled to go live in Black Ops Cold War on March 4. Rapid Fire Moshpit is a playlist composed of Team Deathmatch, Domination, Kill Confirmed, and Hardpoint but only on the game's smallest maps. Dead Ops Arcade: First Person remakes Dead Ops Arcade 3--it's just now played in first-person.

Hardsuit Labs Undergo Layoffs After Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 Delay

3 years 1 month ago
Update: Hardsuit Labs confirmed the layoffs to Rock Paper Shotgun. In a statement, the studio says it had to part with "a small number of individuals" and is working to try and find new opportunities for them going forward. Here is Hardsuit's full statement to RPS below:
"While we worked hard to source some great work opportunities for the studio to move forward with, we were unable to provide work for a small number of individuals and thus made the difficult decision to part ways. This decision was not made lightly and was done so only after we felt we had exhausted the opportunities to avoid such a layoff. "For the affected team members, with their permission, we are reaching out to partners and fellow studios in hopes that we can assist in placing our former colleagues with new opportunities. We sincerely wish the very best to our former colleagues and thank them for their contributions to the studio and our projects during their time here. "Hardsuit Labs continues to move forward with existing and new opportunities, as well as current work on several yet unannounced projects. We look forward to sharing additional information on these games when we can in the future."
[poilib element="accentDivider"] Original Story: Hardsuit Labs has apparently undergone layoffs following Paradox’s decision to remove the entire studio from working on Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2. The news hasn’t been confirmed by Hardsuit, but several developers have shared news of their departure on social media. Last week, publisher Paradox Interactive announced that Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 has been delayed again, this time out of 2021.

Mistwalker's New RPG Fantasian Coming To Apple Arcade

3 years 1 month ago

Hironobu Sakaguchi and Mistwalker are back with another JRPG title, Fantasian, coming to Apple Arcade sometime in 2021. Mistwalker's last few releases on mobile, including Terra Wars (Wow, I reviewed this one!) and Terra Wars 2, were gacha grinders with a lot of style, so we'll see where Fantasian lands on the cool scale after it releases.

For now, there's some really coot art and assets to gawk at while we wait, including handmade dioramas that form the background for big environments. Based on some of the characters we can see in the trailer, one could very easily take a peek and say "Yep. That's definitely a JRPG." Why not give it a watch below?

Click here to watch embedded media

Apparently the story takes place in a multi-dimensional universe where the balance of Chaos and Order is in flux. You begin as a character who has lost his memories and must set off on a journey to discover them. These memories along with other finds like notes and journals along the way as you explore become a sort of storytelling device that flesh out the characters, realms, and more. Along the way you'll probably save the world or something, maybe end up battling a deity while you're floating in the cosmos. Hey, I'm just guessing here.

An Ode To My Favorite Flavor Texts

More than the set piece battle or the final showdown between hero and villain, it’s the quieter, smaller moments in video games that get me. In some games, those tiny moments can be a sudden expression on a character’s face or a short piece of dialogue from an inconsequential scene. But more often than not, my…

New Destiny 2: Season of the Chosen Update Fixes Presage Exotic Quest, Battlegrounds Modifiers

3 years 1 month ago

A new Destiny 2 hotfix has been pushed through for Season of the Chosen, and while it tackles much-needed fixes for Battlegrounds and the Dead Man's Tale Presage exotic quest, it also — thankfully — leaves the hilariously awesome 12-player raid bug intact

Bungie took to the game's official blog once more to detail what sort of changes the latest hotfix brings to the table. While some of the tweaks are minuscule, others tackle the more prominent problems, such as the spawn points in Presage and the lack of pinnacle drops.

Battlegrounds changes

The latest update tackles Battlegrounds, a new activity introduced in Season of the Chosen. One highly reported issue centers around beneficial modifiers not working the way they are supposed to when taking on the different phases within the PvE instance. Hotfix 3.1.0.2 addressed the issue that prevented specific modifiers from functioning properly during the Battlegrounds-specific activities.

Breathedge Review

3 years 1 month ago

Trapping you in a vast field of space wreckage with nothing more than an immortal chicken for company, Breathedge is a survival-adventure game with an undeniably novel setup. Instead of punching trees, you'll navigate a three-dimensional, zero-gravity environment in order to snag supplies, craft tools, and avoid suffocation, all while trying to uncover the twisting plot behind the crash of the largest space liner in history – which happened with you on it. Despite the fresh setting, you'll only get a taste of some rudimentary survival gameplay before a scripted story takes over and drives you out of the survival mechanics entirely. The sense that another wondrous discovery is just around the corner is what drives these games... and Breathedge doesn't have it.

Breathedge is desperate to please with its jokes, slapstick humor, and goofy concepts like corpse-powered coffin robots. It's self-aware that it's a single-player, story-driven survival game and makes references to tropes of the genre (as well as other sci-fi games like Alien: Isolation and Mass Effect), including gags about shoehorned plot contrivances, artificially extended wait times, stale gameplay, and fetch quests. Unfortunately, Breathedge is guilty of the things it makes jokes about, full of the most tedious, repetitive kinds of survival game clichés. Even when I was laughing, its awareness of these issues doesn't make them any less of a problem, and humor isn’t a substitute for innovative gameplay.

Little Hope Owners Are Getting Access to a Free Friend’s Pass & New Curator’s Cut Features

3 years 1 month ago

Today the publishers of The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope, announced that all owners of the most recent game in the series of short story horror games will receive a single free Friend’s Pass.

What the Friend’s Pass does is allow a non-owner of the game to experience one playthrough of the game via Shared Story mode in Little Hope.

Little Hope at this point is well past the spooky season, so it probably doesn’t hurt the bottom line too much to let a few new people give the game a try and prime them for the next game in the anthology, House of Ashes, due out later in the year.

In addition, Little Hope players will get access to the Curator’s Cut which unlock some new exclusive scenes after their initial playthrough.

All of this should be available to players starting today.

We reviewed The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope last year when it released and while flawed, we still found its scares to be worth the price of admission, especially if you’re playing with a friend. I’m more of a Man of Medan fan myself, though.

Battlefield 6 Teaser Points To Kazakhstan Location

3 years 1 month ago

It seems the location for the next entry in DICE's Battlefield series, Battlefield 6, has been teased as the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, according to supposed GPS coordinates.

As reported by Battlefield YouTuber DANNYonPC (via a now-deleted Reddit post), the location's teaser was hidden in plain sight: on the nose of a 3D-rendered character model during a Battlefield tech demo shared at EA Play 2020 and on the medallion of a legendary Battlefield 5 outfit called Eidolon that can only be unlocked by completing a secret challenge.

Allegedly, the numbers located on these two spots pull up a nondescript place in Kazakhstan when plugged into a GPS coordinator. Kazakhstan is a rather large country with a population of approximately 18 million people, making it one of the 10 biggest countries in the world.

EA and DICE have been relatively quiet regarding Battlefield 6, though a reveal for the game is planned for this spring. The publisher also announced that a Need for Speed title has been delayed to 2022 so developer Criterion Games can assist on Battlefield 6's development.
