Ass-kicking April O'Neil, Krang, and Faith No More's Mike Patton among the rad details in TMNT: Shredder's Revenge trailer

3 years 1 month ago

Yesterday saw publisher Dotemu come leaping out of the sewers (erm... no offense) with the announcement of a brand new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade brawler.

TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is in development for PC and consoles at Tribute Games - a studio not only responsible for the enjoyable Mercenary Kings, but who also houses developers who worked on Ubisoft's great 2010 brawler Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Powered by this trinity of brand, studio, and frenzied fan nostalgia, it's fair to say that much of the internet lost its collective mind when the trailer dropped yesterday morning.

From the short gameplay teaser, it's clear that TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is hoping to capture the awesome multiplayer action of Konami's 1989's arcade classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its 1991 sequel, Turtles in Time. With fans suffering from severe shell-shock at the announcement, there's a few details featured in the trailer that might've passed them by.

Music Week: Understanding 'music's eclectic daredevil', Olivier Deriviere

3 years 1 month ago

Music Week continues with Bertie meeting a composer whose work had a powerful effect on him, and whose processes aren't at all what he expected.

What is it about the music in Vampyr that appeals to me so much? I've played plenty of games with great music but this was the first to really make me think about it, to listen, to contemplate, to wonder. Maybe it's the loneliness of the cello. There's a powerful melancholy and almost yearning quality to it, in the way the bow sweeps the strings and makes that rasping, sonorous wave of noise; in and out, the sound lapping at your attention. And within it, there's a sense of aching. The more I think about it, the more it seems to be Jonathan Reid, the vampire, alone on the streets of 1918 London. Alone while coming to terms with what he is, what this world is, and where he fits within it.

Not only do I love the sound and the associations of it, I love the confidence I picture behind it. A confidence to do things differently, to strip everything back and just present a naked sound. No orchestra, no overt demonstration of musical power, no insecurity fuelling a need to impress. Instead, a cello. A cello played almost improvisationally, with scraps of melody moving irregularly as if on a whim. A cello not afraid to be ugly, to squeak by being played on the bridge. Who does that? Who commands someone to make those sounds for a game and knows they will be OK, that they will be enough?

Would You Kindly Take This BioShock Trivia Quiz & Show Us Your Big Daddy Brain

3 years 1 month ago

Ken Levine’s original BioShock was one of the most iconic games of the Xbox 360/ PS3 era. Not only did it bring tight gunplay and supernatural plasmids to the table for some satisfying combat, but it also introduced us to one of the most atmospheric video game worlds we’ve ever visited, Rapture.

A mediocre sequel followed, which in turn was followed by a stronger entry in the series, but one that took us away from the dingey depths of Rapture to the city in the sky of Columbia. And now we sit with bated breath awaiting the confirmed, new BioShock game that’s currently in development.

To help tide you over, and test your knowledge, we’ve come up with this BioShock trivia quiz to test your Big Daddy brain. Would you kindly complete it? No particular reason for using that specific phrasing… we just like it.

EA investigates 'EAGate': employee accused of selling rare FIFA Ultimate Team cards to FIFA 21 players

3 years 1 month ago

Electronic Arts has announced it has begun a "thorough investigation" into allegations that one of its employees has sold rare FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) cards directly to players in the FIFA 21 community.

In what has been dubbed by the internet as #EAGate, (because of course it has), multiple Twitter users posted images - as collated by Eurogamer - that allege to show evidence of deals made between FIFA players and at least one EA employee via direct messaging services.

The supposed transactions revolve around the direct selling of FUT "Icon Moments" - incredibly rare cards based on legendary footballers such as Pele, Zinedine Zidane, and Ruud Guillet. One tweet shows an alleged transaction that features one Icon Moment and two Team of the Year cards changing hands for a total of €1,000 (roughly $1,200 USD). Another example allegedly shows three Icon Moments and two Team of the Year cards selling off-market for €1,700 (or around $2,000 USD).

This morning, Electronic Arts released an official statement regarding the scandal, announcing that it was in the process of launching a thorough investigation into the situation. "We understand how this creates concern about unfair balance in the game and competition," said the publisher on Twitter...

...because sometimes a punchline just writes itself.

Something Related to Steins;Gate Is Being Teased, Likely For Next Week

3 years 1 month ago

Today Mages tweeted a semi-cryptic message using the Japanese hashtag for the Stains;Gate series.

The message is Worldline Divergence “0.210317%” The Story is “Reproduced.”

The number is likely a hint to a date, precisely March 17, 2021, next week.

Considering the hashtag this is possibly about a Steins;Gate game. We already know that one is development, considered like some sort of sequel to the original.

Of course, you can expect everything to be reported here as soon as it’s announced, probably next week.

Wipeout-Style Anti-Gravity Racer Pacer Is Now Available On Xbox

3 years 1 month ago

Roblox Passes $2.5 Billion Mobile Revenue Ahead Of Successful Public Listing

3 years 1 month ago

Just before it went public via a direct listing on Wednesday, Roblox announced that it had reached a milestone of $2.5 billion mobile revenue between the App Store and Google Play--with $1.2 billion of that earned solely in 2020.

It was only October last year when Roblox passed its previous milestone of $2 billion in mobile revenue, meaning Roblox players have spent $500 million on mobile in the last five months. The game is free to download, with all Roblox's revenue coming from the sale of its in-game currency, Robux. While players can also spend on other platforms, more than half of Roblox's sales go through either the App Store or Google Play, with players from the United States accounting for 65% of that mobile revenue.

After multiple delays to its public listing, Roblox finally went public via direct listing on March 10. The New York Stock Exchange set a reference price of $45 a share, but the stock was up almost 55% to $69.50 by market close, as reported by CNN. The listing means the company is now valued at over $45 billion, higher than other industry giants such as EA and Take-Two.

After initially exploring an IPO, Roblox eventually went public via a direct listing. "For us, a direct listing seemed natural," Roblox CEO and co-founder David Baszucki told CNN. "It brings the whole community together and everyone is using the same price at the opening of trading."

Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 4 Review

3 years 1 month ago

It’s no secret licensed racing games on a yearly cadence sometimes struggle to innovate, and Monster Energy Supercross -- The Official Videogame 4 is no exception. It’s certainly true that Supercross 4 looks the best the series ever has humming along at 60 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X│S, and it’s also true that developer Milestone has wedged in more riders, more official teams, and more items than ever before.

However, its attempt at injecting more nuance into the career mode falls short of meaningfully reinventing the experience, and the overall result honestly seems like a bit of an inessential upgrade from 2020’s Supercross 3.

[ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/08/monster-energy-supercross-4-launch-trailer]

Between Supercross, MXGP, Ride, and MotoGP, there’s no doubting Milestone’s enthusiasm when it comes to motorcycle games. With that in mind Supercross 4 is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a sincere and successful stab at distilling an admittedly niche motorsport into a racing game geared towards Supercross disciples. The bikes are lavishly detailed, the track atmosphere is great, and the sense of speed and danger as 22 riders hustle and jostle around the tight stadium courses is very good.

However, this was equally true of Supercross 3, and indeed Supercross 2 – and even the original. It’s subsequently hard to argue that Supercross 4 does quite enough new stuff to truly soar above its predecessors.

(Update) Kickstarter campaign launched for X-COM: UFO Defense book

3 years 1 month ago

[Update: The Monsters in the Dark Kickstarter has hit its target goal of $12,000. The crowdfunding campaign will remain open until April 8, at which point the book will go through its final proofing and publishing process. It will launch in digital format soon thereafter, with a physical paperback to follow in summer 2021.]

A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for a new book that will tell the story behind the development of 1994's X-COM: Enemy Unknown, (released in North America as X-COM: UFO Defense and also as UFO: Enemy Unknown in Europe), the first release in the genre-defining strategy series that is still zapping aliens and fending off intergalactic invasions to this day.

Monsters in the Dark: The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense is an independently produced book by author David L. Craddock, who previously penned the excellent Stay Awhile and Listen series, recounting the formation of Blizzard Entertainment and Blizzard North, as well as the development and launch of the legendary Diablo series

"I read David Craddock's book, Stay Awhile and Listen, and I thought it was quite an intricate, deep-dive into the inner workings of Blizzard Entertainment," said X-COM co-creator Julian Gollop. "I would like to see the X-COM book as kind of a historical record of a game that was influential. Hopefully, it can provide some inspiration, and also some fascination for how things were done in the early days of the games industry- and in some cases, how badly things were done as well."

World Of Warcraft's First Player-Chosen Mount Is Available Now

3 years 1 month ago

In September last year, Blizzard asked World of Warcraft players to vote on a new mount that would be gifted for free to all players with Shadowlands active on their accounts. Players overwhelmingly voted for the Wandering Ancient--a big old walking tree you can ride on top of--and now it's available in-game for eligible players.

Players were tasked with choosing between five unique options: the Wandering Ancient, Soaring Spelltome, Nerubian Swarmer, Curious Caterpillar, and Gooey Slimesaber. The options were listed with a brief description but without any visual aids, meaning players had to imagine the potential of each would-be mount.

The Wandering Ancient overwhelmingly came out on top, and the Blizzard team got to work bringing it to life, creating a walking tree mount that marks the first rideable Ancient in WoW. Just like the pint-sized Blossoming Ancient pet, the Wandering Ancient's foliage will change with the seasons.

Players with Shadowlands will find the Wandering Ancient in their Mount Collection tab. If you don't have Shadowlands yet don't worry, you'll be gifted the Wandering Ancient mount even if you purchase it at a later date.

Valorant Player Sinatraa Suspended Following Sexual Abuse Accusations [Update]

3 years 1 month ago
Update: As the investigation into Jay 'Sinatraa' Won continues, the Overwatch League has issued a statement regarding the matter. Prior to playing Valorant esports, Won was a key member of the San Francisco Shock Overwatch team, where he was crowned MVP for the team's winning 2019 season. Furthermore, Overwatch will refund an Overwatch League skin for Zarya that was inspired by Won as part of his MVP win during his time in the league. The Overwatch League operates under a franchise system, and the San Francisco Shock is operated by a third-party company. In a statement to IGN, an Overwatch League spokesperson says, "The Overwatch League is aware of allegations made against former player Jay “Sinatraa” Won. We take any allegations of this nature seriously and unequivocally support victims of abuse." Overwatch League also says it will offer refunds for the "Alien" Overwatch League skin, which was designed to commemorate Won's MVP win. Anyone with the skin currently can refund the skin for 200 League Tokens (retail: $9.99 USD) and have the skin removed from their collection. The Overwatch Championship and MVP badges will also be removed from the Alien skin in a future patch. An official blog post on the Overwatch League website for how Won helped inspire the Alien skin has already been taken down and now redirects to an error page. You’ll Be Able to Replay the Marvel’s Avengers Campaign With Patch 1.5

3 years 1 month ago

Marvel’s Avengers didn’t exactly have the most ceremonious launch, but with XP changes and cosmetic system reworks on the way, it’s clear that Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are still set on supporting this game. Patch 1.5 is set to drop soon as well, which adds a new story chapter featuring Hawkeye.

In addition to the new story content, it looks like players will also finally be able to replay the main story campaign in Marvel’s Avengers.

As spotted by Game Informer, Crystal Dynamics community manager Andy Wong stated in today’s developer livestream that they’d received many questions from players wondering if it would ever be possible for them to re-experience the story.

With the new patch, you’ll be able to do so while keeping all of your gear and XP gained so far. Considering that the campaign was easily the strongest point of what was a pretty mediocre multiplayer game, it’s no surprise that fans would want some way to play through the story again.

Marvel’s Avengers is now available on PC and consoles, and patch 1.5 is set to drop on March 18.

Switch Is (Almost) The Perfect Mario System

3 years 1 month ago

Nintendo has never been shy about finding occasions to trot out its legacy games, but it leaned especially heavily on Mario's back catalog for its Super Mario 35th anniversary celebration. Back in September, the company collected the plumber's three earliest 3D adventures--Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy--into one Switch compilation, while Wii U's Super Mario 3D World arrived on the system (bundled together with the wonderful new mini-adventure, Bowser's Fury) just last month. Between these two releases, almost all of Mario's 3D games are now available to play on the hybrid console, making it nearly the perfect system for Mario fans--were it not for a handful of glaring omissions.

While most of the plumber's 3D outings have made their way to Switch by this point, Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are still conspicuously missing from the system. The former's absence is somewhat understandable; although 3D Land remains a great game and was a true showpiece for the 3DS's stereoscopic 3D, its ideas and gameplay would be greatly expanded on and refined by 3D World. With that game now on Switch, 3D Land isn't as sorely missed (and, arguably, would not play as well if it were released on a system without stereoscopic 3D).

EA Is Investigating FIFA Scandal After Employee Allegedly Caught Selling Rare FUT Cards

3 years 1 month ago
EA is investigating allegations that an employee, or at least someone involved with EA FIFA, is selling rare FIFA 21 Ultimate Team items in exchange for real money through a kind of makeshift black market. Earlier this week, reports began spreading on social media that claimed to have screenshots of a text exchange between an alleged EA employee and a FIFA 21 player trying to purchase FUT Icon and Team of the Year cards. In the text exchange, the seller was offering rare cards for over $1,000 USD. Typically, the legitimate ways to acquire these cards require trades between players or by purchasing random loot packs, making these cards incredibly rare. And it should be noted that Icon and TOTY cards aren’t just rare because of the famous players on them, but because their competitive stats are also some of the best in the game. The exchange has since been named EA Gate on social media. You can check out the alleged details in a tweet from @FutArcade below.

80 Rapid-Fire Questions About Deathloop

3 years 1 month ago

Click to watch embedded media

For this month's cover story, we're diving deep into Deathloop. We sat down with Dinga Bakaba, Game Director at Arkane Studios, to ask him 80 rapid-fire questions about Deathloop. Firstly, what the heck is Deathloop, and why is the studio making this game instead of Dishonored 3? We asked all of the hard-hitting questions about the game's eternal time loop, the island of Blackreef and the secret society that is inhabiting it, and what the hell is a "murder puzzle?" As it turns out, Dinga was gracious enough to fill in a lot of clarifying points, and we felt like we walked away with a better understanding of what Deathloop actually is.

Deathloop is a game about a hapless hero stuck in a never-ending 24-hour time loop. You play as Colt Vahn, a man trapped in his own version of Groundhogs Day on the desolate island of Blackreef. To make matters worse, he's being hunted by a secret society of mask-wearing lunatics. However, Colt is one of the only people who seems aware of the fact that he is reliving the same day over and over again. If Colt wants to break this loop he’ll need to orchestrate the assassination of eight extremely powerful individuals. To solve the murder puzzle and ultimately escape the loop, he will have to figure out the right order to eliminate his targets across four different time zones and four wildly different environments.

Overwatch Update Adds Resolution Options for Xbox Series X|S

3 years 1 month ago

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch received Xbox Series X|S enhancements in its most recent update, allowing players to switch among multiple options over graphics and framerate.

The enhancements were listed in the update’s official patch notes on Tuesday, which added the Pachimari Challenge event with new cosmetic rewards for the next two weeks.

The “Preferred Mode” option now appears in the game’s graphics settings, and contains three modes that players can switch between to prioritize graphics quality or framerate.

The “Resolution” mode offers higher-resolution at the cost of image quality with the Series X featuring 4K at 60 fps and Series S with 1440p at 60 fps.

The “Balanced” mode offers higher image quality at a lower resolution with Series X pushing 1440p at 60 fps and Series S with 1080p at 60 fps.

The third mode is called “Framerate” and is the performance-type mode that keeps the game at 120 fps at all times while sacrificing both resolution and image quality, though it requires a television or monitor that supports 120Hz or variable refresh rate. The Series X will support the high framerate at 1440p, while the Series S will keep the resolution at 1080p.

No information has been announced on if and when these Overwatch enhancements will be supported by the PlayStation 5.
