The Witcher And Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Is Now Europe's Second-Largest Video Game Company

1 year 2 months ago

CD Projekt is the second-largest video game company in Europe as of this week. By current market valuation, the developer of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 trails only Ubisoft.

Based in Warsaw, Poland, CD Projekt's market valuation climbed to $8 billion this week, surging up from its previous valuation of $6.8 billion just a month ago. Compared to Ubisoft, the France-based company currently has a market valuation of $9.6 billion, but these values often fluctuate on a day-to-day basis. The $8 billion market cap for CD Projekt refers to the total value of all the company's shares of stock, representing the value placed on the company should it be sold.

While CD Projekt originally began as a distributor of foreign games in its native Poland, the company eventually began developing its own games under the CD Projekt Red label, with The Witcher series being its most notable. It even launched its own distribution service in 2008 with GOG.

New Cyberpunk 2077 Figures Revealed by Dark Horse at Toy Fair 2020

1 year 2 months ago

Developer CD Projekt Red’s anticipated upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has yet another line of action figures. As revealed today by Dark Horse during the Toy Fair 2020 convention, 9.5″ tall figures of both main protagonist V and his digital accomplice Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves) are to be made available sometime this year for $49.99.

The news comes by way of a report from comicbook.com. The outlet includes official statue description of Johnny Silverhand, which suggests it will indeed feature the same likeness as actor Keanu Reeve. There’s also a first image of the V statue.

“The breathtaking Johnny Silverhand figure is bringing an axe to a gunfight — the legendary Rockerboy and ‘Samurai’ band front man will take Night City, and you, by storm in Cyberpunk 2077.”

The image of V can be seen below.

GTA Online's Formula 1 racing will start next week

1 year 2 months ago

A series of Formula 1-y races are coming to GTA Online on February 27th, Rockstar announced today. I say ‘Formula 1’ because that’s the one I know, but I suppose the upcoming Open Wheel Race Series could be inspired by F2, or IndyCar, or… look, it’s those weird cars shaped like fighter jets, okay. While those races don’t start until next Thursday, crimepeople do have the opportunity to win one of its new cars now. The Progen PR4 is the grand prize on the Diamond Casino’s free-to-spin prize wheel this week, see, and that’s the only official way to get it before the launch.

I don't think I can resist Subnautica: Below Zero any longer

1 year 2 months ago

It's getting harder and harder to put off playing Subnautica: Below Zero, a game I know I'll immediately fall in love with but would ideally rather dive into once it's finished and out of Early Access. I'm at the point now where I'm even considering starting up a fresh save in the original game I'm that far gone!

The latest update for Subnautica: Below Zero, the Lost Ship update, might be the final push I need. It adds a cute little Trivalve companion that you can pet (not unlike Subnautica's beloved Cuddlefish).

Along with "polish and improvements" to biomes like Lilypad Islands and Thermal Spires, there's a split-apart sunken vessel to explore. One of the creepiest parts of Subnautica is combing through wreckage only to get turned around, run low on oxygen, and panic when you can't find your way back out.

Ice formations called Brinicles, plump Deep Lilypads, and Aurora Borealis round out the update.

Unknown Worlds also warned that the Lost Ship update is our last chance to play Below Zero's current story before the studio takes another stab at it in the next game update. I'm feeling the pressure!

Next Week's Free PC Game At Epic Games Store Revealed

1 year 2 months ago

The Epic Games Store gives away free games every week, the latest of which are Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Faeria. Now that you can claim both of those games, we can also see what's coming next for Epic's free game giveaways. The colourful, sky-and-sea exploration game, InnerSpace, will be available to claim for free from February 27 to March 5.

In InnerSpace, you take control of an aircraft and are tasked with exploring the Inverse, a world in which gravity pulls everything away from the surface as opposed to towards it. You have to help an archaeologist find the lost relics of the Inverse before they're lost forever. These relics are messages from long-lost civilizations, so you'll need to search the skies and oceans to find them.

InnerSpace was funded successfully on Kickstarter back in 2014. Developed by a small team of seven people, it released in January 2018.

Take-Two opens new studio to continue work on Kerbal Space Program 2

1 year 2 months ago

Take-Two publishing subsidiary Private Division has announced that it's established a brand-new studio to continue development of spaceflight sim sequel Kerbal Space Program 2, which is currently expected to arrive in "fiscal year 2021".

Kerbal Space Program 2 was announced last year, as a joint venture between Private Division and developer Star Theory Games, previously responsible for the likes of Planetary Annihilation and Monday Night Combat under the name Uber Entertainment.

According to Take-Two - which acquired the Kerbal Space Program rights from original developer Squad in 2017 - work on the sequel will now move in-house, with the game being the sole focus of Private Division's newly established studio. Star Theory studio head Jeremy Ables, creative director Nate Simpson, and lead producer Nate Robinson will all make the move.

Black Desert Lets Friends Adventure Together With Crossplay in March

1 year 2 months ago

Despite the PS4 version being a bit behind in terms of features, Pearl Abyss will be adding crossplay functionality for Black Desert on consoles next month in a new update.

The crossplay update is coming Mar. 4, but one look at the comment section for the announcement’s teaser trailer will let you know that not all players are excited for it. Crossplay is almost always looked at as a positive feature, yet in the case of Black Desert, it’s causing mixed feelings.

The PS4 version just launched not too long ago, so it’s still not on par with the Xbox One version of the game which launched six months prior. Black Desert on PS4 hasn’t had as many updates as the Xbox version yet, so it’s possible that this crossplay may be coming at a bad time for PS4 users.

The PS4 just received the Kunoichi class this month, and is still waiting on the Archer. It seems one console may have the upper hand over the other in terms of PvP gameplay options once the update goes live, but we’ll just have to wait and see how the crossplay is implemented come March.

The Black Desert YouTube channel also released a short teaser for the upcoming crossplay feature. You can check it out below:

HTC's Vive Cosmos family expands with three new VR headsets and face plates

Just when you thought it was safe to take the plunge on a VR headset in time for Half-Life: Alyx, HTC have just gone and announced three new Vive Cosmos headsets to spice up your virtual window shopping. Dubbed the Vive Cosmos Elite, Vive Cosmos XR and Vive Cosmos Play, all three headsets will have the same 2880×1700 resolution display and overall design as the original Cosmos, but their level of tracking capability will vary depending on which headset you go for – presumably to make them more competitive against the Cosmos’ cheaper, lower-end Oculus and more expensive, higher-end Index rivals. Here’s everything you need to know.

PSA: Assassin's Creed Syndicate is free right now

1 year 2 months ago

One of the better (and most modern) Assassin's Creed games is free right now. As part of Epic's weekly free offerings on the Epic Games Store, 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate is up for grabs at no cost to you. If you slept on it, give it a whirl.

If you're getting a sense of déjà vu, that's because we already told you about this earlier in the week. But, it's actually live now, ready to be downloaded and enjoyed. A little nudge never hurt anyone. (Also, think of all the poor souls who don't read every single article on Destructoid. They deserve a second chance at a heads-up, even if they're monsters.)

Let's double down on the PSA. While you're at it, deck-building strategy game Faeria is also free. Want a triple dose of intel? Next week, heady cosmic exploration game InnerSpace is free. It's described as "A game about exploration, about player-driven moments both small and grandiose. Take your time, soar through the skies and dive through the oceans, and the secrets of the Inverse will reveal themselves." Quite the whiplash from stabbing thousands of Englishmen through the neck.

Take-Two Opens New Studio For Kerbal Space Program 2

1 year 2 months ago

Take-Two Interactive subsidiary Private Division, the publisher of Panache Digital Games' Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey and Obsidian Entertainment's The Outer Worlds, has opened a new studio in Seattle, Washington to handle development on the space flight simulator series Kerbal Space Program.

This Seattle-based studio will focus exclusively on KSP, taking over development from Star Theory. In a press briefing, Take-Two confirmed that this new team is comprised of members who have already worked on Kerbal Space Program 2, which will launch sometime between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021. This new date range includes the possibility that KSP 2 might miss its tentative 2020 release window.

"When we first acquired Kerbal Space Program, we knew it would continue to be a blockbuster franchise. We're very excited about the launch of Kerbal Space Program 2 in Take-Two's fiscal year 2021 (ending March 31, 2021)," Private Division said over email. "Private Division believes strongly in the talented group of developers behind the game. The decision to open our own studio and move development in-house allows us to provide the development team with the necessary time and resources to complete [the] development of KSP 2 at the quality level we all want to deliver our players.

10 Details You Might Have Missed in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct

Ability to Choose Island Map and Change Its Landscape

island map

In previous Animal Crossing games, you’d be given a town map with features like rivers and cliffs in random spots. Now in New Horizons, at the beginning of the game, you’ll be able to choose between several island maps to ensure you’re happy with its layout.

What’s even more exciting is that even if you aren’t completely satisfied with the layout, you’ll be able to acquire a construction permit later in the game to change the landscape. For the first time ever, you can add and remove land and water to make it look exactly how you want it to.

How DOOM 64 Influenced DOOM Eternal

1 year 2 months ago
DOOM Eternal, the highly anticipated sequel to the fantastic 2016 DOOM reboot (and also the IGN First game for February), is heavily influenced by the 1997 Nintendo 64 entry, DOOM 64. In this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered, Ryan McCaffrey sat down with id Software Executive Producer Marty Stratton and DOOM Eternal Director Hugo Martin to talk about DOOM Eternal, how it was inspired by DOOM 64, and what the legacy of DOOM means all these many years later. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/03/the-first-10-minutes-of-doom-eternal-gameplay-4k60fps-ign-first"] Not only is DOOM 64 a primary point of tonal inspiration for DOOM Eternal, but it's also the first game in the series that Martin ever owned, and it's his personal favorite. "I had played DOOM prior to that, in the dorms... on other people's PCs," Martin said, "but I didn't have a PC at that time; I was a Mac user. So, when DOOM 64 came out, that was the first time I had a chance to dive in for several hours at a time, into a DOOM game. "I genuinely think DOOM 64 is my favorite, having played them all... We replay them, all of us, at the beginning of development... always," Martin continued. "I'm constantly revisiting all of them, just to spot-check and play it again... make sure you keep your finger on the pulse of what really makes a good DOOM game. So they're all very familiar to everyone on the team." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="legacyId=503&captions=true"] Martin went on to explain what made DOOM 64 stand out to him. "I just like the atmosphere of DOOM 64, I think. It's a little bit more moody. Obviously, it's a few years later, [so the development team was] able to do a few more things. I think, honestly, the art that went into it is really memorable.

KeyWe is such a cute idea for a co-op game

1 year 2 months ago

KeyWe is way too cute. It's a cooperative puzzle-platformer about a pair of flightless birds who are trying their absolute best to manage a chaotic postal office and get messages where they need to go.

Also, they're named Jeff and Debra. I can't cope! They're so precious.

KeyWe is coming to PC and Mac in 2021 "for sure," according to Stonewheat & Sons, but the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions are stuck in "we hope!" limbo for the time being.

I'm seriously late to the party on this one – it's been known about for a good long while, as evidenced by the most recent trailer, posted back in April 2019 – but I've got to do what I can to spread the word.

If you're attending PAX East this month in Boston, you can try KeyWe at booth #30071.

PUBG will finally let PS4 and Xbox One players party up together

1 year 2 months ago

Console wars are so last decade: everyone knows it's all about cross-play nowadays, and PUBG's latest console update is bringing everyone together by letting PS4 and Xbox One players party up. As for PC players - looks like you're still on your own, sorry.

After introducing limited cross-console play back in October, PUBG's 6.2 update finishes the job by allowing PS4 and Xbox One players to squad up in a single party. Until this point console users could play in the same matches, but not join a squad together - which is ultimately the feature everyone actually wants cross-play for.

Those wanting to bridge the console gap need only search for their buddy's Xbox Live Gamer Tag or PSN Name in PUBG's friends list. The update is already live on public test servers, so you can jump in with your friends right away.

Everything New In Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2

1 year 2 months ago

Fortnite has launched its Chapter 2 Season 2 (C2S2) update on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and mobile--the first new season since the big chapter changeover last year. The event was heralded by a week of teasers suggesting an espionage theme, with secret agents dropping coded messages all around the globe. Sure enough, the update is all about spycraft, with competing covert factions Ghost and Shadow. This time you can choose your allegiance to one of these factions, and receive different challenges and rewards as a result.

We also know that Deadpool will be this season's secret unlock, though it's unclear exactly when the merc with a mouth will become available.

As usual, the new season comes with a new Battle Pass to purchase for 950 V-Bucks (about $10 USD), and its requisite cosmetic rewards like a bunch of new skins. Plus, developer Epic has made plenty of small gameplay adjustments and new mechanics to mix up the meta as we head into another season. To catch you up, we've compiled everything new in C2S2 below. More content roll-outs may be coming over the next few weeks as well, so check back for updates.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 Update Is Now Live

1 year 2 months ago

The second season of Fortnite Chapter 2 has officially begun. Following a string of teasers, developer Epic Games has rolled out Fortnite's big Season 2 update on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, bringing a wealth of new content, changes, skins, and more to the hit battle royale shooter. Epic has not released the Season 2 patch notes itself, but players are working together to assemble their own.

As the studio had been teasing, Chapter 2 Season 2 has a spy theme. The island has been taken over by two warring covert factions known as Ghost and Shadow. You'll be able to side with one of the two when completing weekly Battle Pass challenges, which will determine the upgrade style for that character. There's also Deadpool for some reason.

To go along with the spy theme, a number of new points of interest have been added to the map. Among these are enemy bases. These are heavily guarded, but if you can infiltrate them and defeat the leader within, you'll be able to snag "unique and powerful weapons."

It looks like Hostel director Eli Roth will be making the Borderlands film

1 year 2 months ago

The long-forgotten Borderlands film might actually be making some headway, as Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford tweeted that Eli Roth has joined the team to direct it. Roth is known for making a fair few horror flicks (as well as that one weird family film where Jack Black plays a warlock that saves the world), so, yeah, no idea what his link is with Borderlands really.

Pitchford deleted the tweet announcing all the new film stuff this almost immediately – but the internet never forgets, Randy.

Borderlands movie gets a second wind as Eli Roth is set to direct

1 year 2 months ago

Borderlands is a popular video game franchise because of all the video game things it does well. It's an excellent shooter, it scratches a cooperative social itch, and it overwhelms players with a staggering amount of loot. The things it struggles with -- story, dialogue, anything that isn't shooting -- are the exact reasons it'd be a tough adaption to anything outside of an interactive medium. Yet, Borderlands is being turned into a movie anyway.

Lionsgate has announced that it's moving forward with a Borderlands film that has Eli Roth attached as the director. Roth (Hostel, Thanksgiving) says "I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas -- it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together. We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally." Pitchford is attached as an executive producer.

Even though Lionsgate hasn't talked about the story of the Borderlands movie, each game generally tells the same narrative: A group of Vault Hunters try their damnedest to open a Vault on Pandora (and beyond). It feels all but assured that the film will follow that same formula.
