PlayStation Cancels PAX East Attendance Due To Coronavirus Concerns

10 months 4 weeks ago

PlayStation has announced it is withdrawing from its scheduled appearance at PAX East next week due to concerns surrounding COVID-19 (known as novel coronavirus). The slate of playable games was originally set to include The Last of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Iron Man VR, and more.

You can see PlayStation's full statement surrounding its decision below as posted on PlayStation Blog.

"Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as “novel coronavirus”). We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern."

Pokemon Go Legendary, Tornadus, Leaves Raid Battles Very Soon

10 months 4 weeks ago

Pokemon Go's latest Legendary, Tornadus, won't be around for much longer. The Cyclone Pokemon is scheduled to leave Raid Battles on Tuesday, February 25 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET, making this your last chance to catch one in the game.

Until then, Tornadus will appear in Gyms as a five-star Raid Boss. Before you can catch it, you'll need to team up with other players in-person and defeat the Legendary in a battle. Tornadus is a pure Flying type, making it vulnerable to Rock, Electric, and Ice Pokemon like Rhyperior, Zapdos, and Glaceon.

If you don't yet have a Rhyperior, you'll have a chance to get one during this month's Community Day, which takes place this Saturday, February 22. The featured Pokemon this time is Rhyhorn, so there will be plenty of opportunities to catch some during the event. If you can evolve Rhyhorn all the way into Rhyperior up to two hours after the Community Day ends, it'll learn the Rock-type attack Rock Wrecker, which should prove to be very helpful against Tornadus.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord starts Early Access on March 31

10 months 4 weeks ago

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord has narrowed down its launch window to a launch day, a moment that's many, many long years in the making. The sprawling medieval RPG is releasing on March 31, 2020.

This should come as no surprise to Mount & Blade fans, but the sequel will run its course on Steam Early Access. The current timeline is "around a year," which seems optimistic, especially given TaleWorlds Entertainment's development philosophy. "Our focus is on ensuring that the game is fun and enjoyable rather than imposing a deadline that might have a negative impact on the final product."

At launch, the Early Access build of Bannerlord will have single-player story content and multiplayer.

In summary: "Players can create their own character using the game's character creation system; explore the continent of Calradia; gather their own warband of troops; command and fight alongside their troops in large scale battles using the game's extensive command system and intuitive skill-based directional combat system; raid settlements; lay siege to and capture enemy towns and castles; trade items and goods using the game's deep economy system; engage in politics and diplomacy; manage their own clan; upgrade and manage settlements; gather armies and wage war; and much, much more... all in a vast single-player sandbox setting where no two playthroughs are the same."

Doom Eternal And Animal Crossing Fans Have Become Supportive Friends

10 months 4 weeks ago

Despite one of the biggest games of the month--Final Fantasy 7 Remake--getting pushed to early April, March is still packed to the gills with releases. And two of those upcoming games are seeing some unexpected and wholesome cross-pollination: Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal.

Both titles launch on March 20--Animal Crossing: New Horizons lands on Nintendo Switch, while Doom Eternal comes to basically everything else (Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, as well as Switch sometime this year). And both subreddit communities are cheering each other on.

Over in the Doom subreddit, fans are posting a variety of artwork featuring the Doomguy and Isabelle, Animal Crossing's adorable little Shih Tzu. The crossover art is rendered in a bunch of different styles, from traditional Animal Crossing fare to memes and everything in between.

The Dragon Quest Movie’s Big Plot Twist Has Messed Me Up

10 months 4 weeks ago

Right before the weekend, the English version of Dragon Quest Your Story landed on Netflix. Given the film industry’s recent epiphany that movie adaptations of video games can be good —or at least decent— I gave the Dragon Quest movie a shot. While I mostly enjoyed the film, the ending simultaneously fixed the movie’s problems but almost undid the goodwill it had built up.

Spoiler warning from here on.

At first glance, Dragon Quest Your Story is an adaptation of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. A man’s wife is kidnapped by an evil bishop and the man takes his son on a quest to rescue his wife and stop the bishop’s organization from summoning an evil demon.

Along the way, the man and son gather a fellowship of warriors and wizards, and the man is eventually killed. His son continues his quest, later marries, and has children of his own. Finally, the family and their allies band together to defeat the bishop, his organization, and the demon.

However, Dragon Quest Your Story takes some liberties. It cuts out a good chunk of the story and playable characters —including one of the protagonist’s children. Then the movie drops a huge plot twist bomb at the end and reveals this particular retelling is actually a VR game. Feel free to make comparisons to Roy: A Life Well Lived from Rick and Morty; I sure did.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Returning To Steam, But Without Multiplayer

10 months 4 weeks ago
After being delisted on Steam, Grand Theft Auto 4 will return to Valve’s platform as Grand Theft Auto 4: Complete Edition. However, despite the name, this version is missing something: the game’s multiplayer mode. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2013/05/08/igns-top-10-grand-theft-auto-4-mods"] From March 19, Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition will be added to Steam and any other digital distribution platform where GTA 4 is sold. This version will replace Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, effectively combining them into a single package. Existing owners will have their version replaced with this one, which means those who only own GTA 4 will actually be upgraded to the Complete Edition. The Rockstar official support page also confirmed that while old save files will be compatible with Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, but Steam Achievements will not be available until the new version launches in March. This change is a result of Microsoft dropping support for Games for Windows Live, which was integrated into the PC version of GTA 4. The lack of support has forced Rockstar to make some adjustments to the game, which unfortunately has meant the removal of multiplayer and leaderboards. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-rockstar-game-review-ever&captions=true"] The new version will also lack three radio stations - RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM, and Vice City FM - although Rockstar’s statement on the GTA 4 Steam page claims that this is a temporary situation. Steam users will find that the automatic update will do the heavy lifting for them, but those with Windows Store or physical media copies will need to do some extra work.

New PS4 'Essential Picks' Sale Live Now With Deals On The Best Games

10 months 4 weeks ago

The PlayStation Store has been handing out deals left and right in a series of great PS4 sales this month, and that streak continues with the latest sale kicking off on PSN today. The Essential Picks PS4 sale is live now with up to 70 percent off some of the system's best games, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition and last year's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, so this is a great opportunity to snag some games on your personal wishlist. The Essential Picks sale is live now until March 3 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET.

It's been nearly five years since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first released, but there's no question it's one of the most acclaimed and influential games of this console generation, and with the popularity of the new Netflix Witcher TV show, its audience continues to grow. The Complete Edition is on sale for just $15 and includes all DLC and expansion packs as well as the base game.

You'll also find Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which just released in November, on sale for $45. That's a great deal on the action-adventure game, which follows the adventures of a young Jedi named Cal Kestis. Quite a few older PS4 hits are discounted as well, including Bloodborne - Complete Edition bundle for $17.49, The Last of Us Remastered for $15, and Until Dawn for $15. We've seen these games on sale for cheaper--PlayStation discounted its Greatest Hits collection to $10 each for Black Friday--but any one of these games is still worth picking up for a few bucks more if you've never played them.

Sea of Thieves' latest update adds a cursed chest so angry it'll set your boat on fire

10 months 4 weeks ago

It's middle-month, and so time for another Sea of Thieves updates, with February's offering arriving in the form of Chests of Rage - which, as you'll already know if you read the headline, includes a cursed chest so positively apoplectic, it can set your ship on fire.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Chest of Rage is the first new cursed chest to be added to Sea of Thieves' since the piratical multiplayer adventure launched just shy of two years ago. It's a doozy though, burning hotter and hotter once hauled onboard a ship until it's mad enough to release a fiery shockwave, setting both ship and crew alight.

Attentive pirates can keep it cool by slopping it with water, but, intriguingly, the shockwave can be equally damaging to non-crew players, other ships, and skeletons. As such, it has strategic potential as a weapon in the right hands - particularly as it's possible to trigger the chest's shockwave faster, and sort-of on-demand, by attacking it.

Yacht Club has a Nintendo Direct-like stream next week to talk about life after Shovel Knight

10 months 4 weeks ago

Shovel Knight is done -- dead and buried, six feet underground. Okay, maybe it was more ceremonious than that, but it's the only way the digging puns fit.

Yacht Club Games has spent nearly seven years on Shovel Knight, with the final expansion, King of Cards, launching last December. That's a long time to be creatively-chained to one ever-growing project. It's time for something new.

We'll get an update on Yacht Club's going-ons next Wednesday. On February 26 at 9am Pacific, Yacht Club is hosting its second Nintendo Direct-like livestream to keep us abreast of the studio's projects. It can be viewed on YouTube and Twitch.

Some expected topics are Cyber Shadow (a fast-paced side-scrolling platformer that will draw comparisons to Ninja Gaiden, and developed by Mechanical Head Studios) and Shovel Knight Dig (a Shovel Knight spin-off in the vein of Dig Dug which is being primarily developed by Nitrome, not Yacht Club). Of course, there are promises of "surprises you've never seen."

Fortnite Emotes Are Now Safe To Stream Again

10 months 4 weeks ago

If you enjoy streaming Fortnite you're likely annoyed by its emotes. It's not that they're bad, but rather that many of them feature music that could get you into trouble on Twitch, YouTube, and Mixer. But with the latest update to the Battle Royale game, that won't be an issue anymore.

Fortnite is getting a handy options toggle on PC, allowing you to use emotes without playing any licensed audio that may be attached to it. That means no accidental mutes or content strikes on your streams and videos. Just the same silly dance moves, without some of the audible fanfare behind them.

That will definitely come in handy if you're a fan of Rick Astley, who Epic Games struck a deal with recently to have his now infamous dance join the growing collection of emotes.

Bayonetta Dev Platinum Games Teases Major Announcement For Next Week

10 months 4 weeks ago

Platinum Games, developer of Bayonetta, Astral Chain, NieR: Automata, and other action titles, is set to make a major announcement in the February 27 issue of Famitsu. That's according to this week's edition of the magazine, as translated and reported by Gematsu.

Earlier this month, Platinum Games launched a mysterious teaser website called Platinum 4. This led to the studio kicking off an official Kickstarter campaign for a port of the former Wii U-exclusive The Wonderful 101. The campaign was immediately successful, meeting crowdfunding goals that ensure the remaster is set to release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The website now displays The Wonderful 101 as the first of the Platinum 4, with next week's announcement presumably being the second.

Bayonetta 3 and Babylon's Fall are both already in development at Platinum, so if the mysterious Platinum 4 only concerns unannounced games they're unlikely to be included. The secrecy would indicate that, but you also never know. Last year, the studio revealed plans to self-publish two brand-new IPs, with recent investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent possibly contributing to this.

Rare Details Sea of Thieves’ Crews of Rage Update in New Launch Video

10 months 4 weeks ago

Sea of Thieves’ Crews of Rage update is live, and Rare has released a new launch video detailing everything players can expect to see from it.

Streamed via the official Sea of Thieves YouTube channel, the video details some of the new features and activities the update offers. On the new content front, players can find new bounties from Duke which will send them out in search of new bounty targets and the Chest of Rage, which burns with the anger of dead pirates’ souls trapped within.

Sea of Thieves players will need to keep the chest cool as they transport it to the highest bidder, dropping it in the sea or dousing it in water with a bucket. If they don’t, the chest will let out an explosive wave of flame, burning ship and crew members alike to ash.

There’s also a new opportunity for challenge and adventure through the Molten Sands Fortress. Ashen Skeletons have gathered there for an unknown purpose, and it’s up to players to stop them and plunder their fortress for everything it’s worth.

Players can likewise now find Sea of Thieves’ final five Ashen Tomes, which will grant them the ability to deck their ship out with special Ashen Cosmetics.

Speaking of which: There are a slew of new cosmetics for players to unlock or purchase from the Black Market. Some, like the Deep Ocean Crawler cosmetics, give players and their crew a style perfect for flexing on others in multiplayer.

Others, like the Reaper’s Heart cosmetics, grant players a more fiendish vibe to their appearance and weapons, and even grant their pets an air of dark magic given form.

Should Sea of Thieves players want something less scary to dress their pets up in though, they can find a slew of new pet outfits available as well.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 "Fantastic Four" DLC Coming Next Month

10 months 4 weeks ago

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 will add another chunk of story content and five more playable characters in March. The Fantastic Four: Shadow of Doom pack will feature the iconic superhero family fighting against their nemesis, Doctor Doom. It's coming on March 26.

This will be the last of the downloadable content included in the game's expansion pass. The first two, Curse of the Vampire and Rise of the Phoenix, featured characters from Marvel Knights and the X-Men, respectively. This one will presumably add the Fantastic Four--Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), the Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Ben Grimm). The character select screen shows five new slots incoming, though, which could mean you can recruit Doom to your Ultimate Alliance ranks too.

No Man's Sky now has living ships with creepy, veiny cockpits

No Man’s Sky continues to grow and now it’s grown something properly alive. It’s an egg that hatches into a sentient ship. Sorry, am I reading that right? Yup, the spacefaring crafting simulation game now has ships that are alive and you pilot them from inside their apparently spacious cockpit heads. Where’s the brain at, though? The Living Ship update is adding some other organic stuff to the universe and NPCs that can hail you from space.

PlatinumGames Will Announce Something Next Week; Reassures Fans on Bayonetta 3’s Development

10 months 4 weeks ago

Today’s issue of Weekly Famitsu included an interview to PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamya and Atsushi Inaba focusing on the Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle, but they had some additional teases to share.

First of all, we hear that PlatinumGames will make an announcement next week on Famitsu itself. The new issue will release on February 27.

Secondly, Kamiya-san acknowledged that it has been a while since the latest reveal of Bayonetta 3, and he hears voices on social media from fans who are anxious about it.

He mentioned that development is proceeding smoothly, and that there is various information hidden in the trailer released in 2017.

Kamiya-san hopes that fans can wait for the next reveal while trying to read a variety of things in that trailer.

It’s worth mentioning that the announcement coming next week is likely unrelated to Bayonetta. The wording on Famitsu clearly indicates that it’s an announcement from PlatinumGames, while reveals about Bayonetta 3 are likely to come from Nintendo.

This is likely related to the three unannounced new project that PlatinumGames has been teasing, which will likely be self-published.

We’ll probably know more with next week’s panel at PAX East, with Kamiya-san and Inaba-san in attendance.

Wolcen: Lords Of Mayhem is ridiculous and I love it

10 months 4 weeks ago

The world is crying out for Diablikes, or at least it seems that way from the rampant success of Wolcen: Lords Of Mayhem, a hacking, slashing, dungeon crawling action RPG that went into the top ten on Steam as soon as it released. It’s only climbed higher since, despite the fact that it’s only just left early access and is not issue-free. Also despite the fact that I have played it for several hours and have yet to identify who or what is Wolcen.

Wolcen: Lords Of Mayhem (which is, impressively, the game’s second crack at a title) is very derivative. If I didn’t know any better I’d say even the dialogue was procedurally generated by digitally pulping together Tolkien’s collected works with all three previous Diablo games, a recent D&D rulebook and the entire contents of one (1) Games Workshop store. But that’s okay. Nothing exists that is original, as they say. And, even as I write this, I want to play it again, because it is amazing.

Little Town Hero: Big Idea Edition coming to PS4 in June

10 months 4 weeks ago

Game Freak has announced that its think-'em-up RPG Little Town Hero is coming to PS4 in June, and will receive a similar physical release to its Nintendo Switch brethren in the form of the Little Town Hero: Big Idea Edition.

Released back in October of last year, Little Town Hero is a cutesy adventure game which sees a bored young boy name Ax finally embark upon the exciting escapades he has long dreamed of when a gaggle of ghastly monsters invade his quaint, sleepy village. No match for the invaders in terms of physical strength, Ax and his friends must drive the enemy back using the games "ideas" mechanic, implying adaptation and forward-thinking over rage-fueled sword-swinging. You can check out our own Adzuken's review right here.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare adds the 1v1 Rust playlist we all craved

10 months 4 weeks ago

Ah yes, it's time for the return of an ancient meme from the days when Call of Duty players would throw down the gauntlet of "1v1 me bro" to anyone who challenged their gaming credentials. Partly ironic, partly an excuse to humiliate your friend with a 360 no-scope on Rust.

After a remake of Modern Warfare 2's Rust was introduced earlier this month, players immediately began to wonder when they'd be able to duel it out on the iconic map in the new Modern Warfare. After a tense few days of waiting (and some heavy hints from Infinity Ward), it looks like that time is now, as the latest playlist update has added 1v1 for Rust. It appears to have made the community rather happy.

The reason why this meme was attached to Rust specifically, according to collective internet wisdom, is because of Rust's size: as such a compact map, it made it far easier for duelling friends to find each other in 1v1 matches with sniper rifles. Nowadays it's mainly a parody phrase - although I'm tempted to start using it to challenge people around the office.

February's Free SNES And NES Games For Switch Online Members Now Live

The new NES games this month are Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel. The former is a cooperative side-scrolling action game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden, while the latter is a top-down racing game that has players piloting high-speed powerboats.

The two new SNES titles, meanwhile, are the cute-but-frenetic top-down shooter Pop'n TwinBee and the sports game Smash Tennis. What makes these titles particularly notable is that neither has previously received a US release. You can take a look at the four new Switch Online games below.

I don't know anything about Captain Tsubasa, but just kicking a ball in his new game looks awesome

10 months 4 weeks ago

I don't know anything about Captain Tsubasa, but I am going to play his new video game because every kick of the ball looks like a Dragon Ball fight and I can't wait to give it a try.

My (very) basic research tells me Captain Tsubasa is a manga from the '80s that was a massive hit in Japan. There's an anime, too - and it's still going. It's all about the title character, a school kid who dreams of playing for Japan at the World Cup.

Today, publisher Bandai Namco released a video showcasing the story mode for Captain Tsubasa: Rise Of New Champions. I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I'm kicking every ball right with the players.

Biomutant won't commit to a release date, but it's doing fine

10 months 4 weeks ago

Biomutant is one of the more out-there mainstream-facing games I've seen in the last few years, and ever since playing a brief preview build, I've wanted to know more. The open-world action-RPG blends a lot of different styles and influences in a way that's messy, and textured, but still undeniably fun.

I'm not the only one who's curious to know what's up with Biomutant. It's been unusually quiet, which tends to spur a sense of dread. The developer, Experiment 101, recently broke its silence.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the studio said it knows fans are getting antsy – and to hold tight. "We are doing everything we can to make this the best game all of us have ever worked on," the post said.

"We can only hope for your continued support and patience as we complete the final stages of its development. As some of you might understand or know, the work involved in finishing a game is long, challenging, and unpredictable. The sheer magnitude, size, and length of Biomutant adds to said effort."

"We will reveal the release date as soon as everyone at our studio feels confident about hitting that date and that the game is ready for it," the developer continued. "Again, thank you for your understanding and for your continued support and enthusiasm for our game."

If everything comes together like I hope it will, I think Biomutant is going to catch people off-guard.

Morgana Gives Us a Quick Persona 5 Royal Crash Course in New Trailer

10 months 4 weeks ago

The ATLUS West YouTube channel just dropped a new English trailer for Persona 5 Royal, and in it, Morgana gives us a few details on a number of new and returning features that players can expect to see this time around.

Morgana is joined by new Phantom Thief, Kasumi, as he gives her (and the audience) a crash course on what’s to come. He covers a number of topics as the trailer shows them off in-game, including the following:

  • What is a Persona?
  • New foes/New Persona
  • What does a Phantom Thief do?
  • New puzzles in Palaces
  • Grappling hook feature
  • Jose/Mementos
  • New confidants/Maruki
  • New locations: Kichijoji
  • Thieves Den

Some of what Morgana explains in the trailer will be old news to those who already completed Persona 5, but the new confidants, locations, and activities are a few of the major differences found in Royal.

Jose is a new character who provides additional activities for the Phantom Thieves in Mementos, while Dr. Maruki is a new staff member and confidant at Shujin Academy that needs help with his research. That sounds pretty similar to Dr. Takemi’s situation, but we’ll have to wait to see more.

As for new locations, both Kichijoji and the Thieves Den were on display in this detailed Persona 5 Royal trailer. Kichijoji is a large area that contains enough activities, both day and night, for Morgana to even let you stay up late to experience them all. Thank goodness.
